Idk why people dislike this guy, he has the time and resources to literally be a guinea pig for the betterment of humanity’s aggregated knowledge. Maybe he finds a way to slow aging, maybe he helps us understand what being “healthy” is.

It's kinda scary if he suceeded and they discovered the key to "immortality" is cheap and easily reproducible, after years wasting money and resources trying shit and being mocked. We would get bigger trouble if it's possible, and humanity would not be ready. But yeah, I don't believe something like that exists, he can do whatever he wants with his money, and he seems to be enjoying it.

Well yeah, but we don't have that "magic pills" that can extend quality life to -say- 300 years. Its not enough for him with eating less, moving more, etc. he has this unconvetional obsession towards "not die" and wants to keep pushing, and some of his "extreme" methods are not even "scientific(?)" for the lack of better word. If there is even 0.1% chance that "fountain of youth" exist and it sounds "scientific" enough for him, he'd pursue it. As for strawman, seems like he doesn't care, perhaps he even likes it when people do that to him. I personally don't dislike/like him, sometimes humanity needs "crazy" people like this to advance science, and maybe one day he'll succeed, and that would be a bigger problem for society, imagine a hypothetical scenario where suddenly million/billions of people living for 500 years.

Narcissism/inflated sense of self and selling ovepriced supplements. I don't hate him, but I completely understand why people steer clear of him, especially given he's so adjacent to the techbros ruining the world rn

🤦‍♂️

I don't dislike him. I'm not sure I exactly like him either.

I watched his Netflix doco, I respect what he's trying to do. OTOH, it does seem a bit... extreme? The plasma from his son aside, he's on a ridiculously inflexible regimen which feels obsessive rather than healthy. He's engaging in some really avoidant behaviour that we'd question if our friends were doing it (e.g. extreme orthorexia, avoiding any sunlight exposure). And he takes 60 supplements a day. Even from a data standpoint there are so many variables in the equation that it would be virtually impossible to work out what effects or interactions are going on. And the sample size of 1 may tell us less about "what prolongs longevity" and more about "what improves the health of Bryan Johnson".

This is my feeling too. It's so inhumane and so neurotic that I would question his sanity. He's so afraid of dying that he stopped living like a normal person. I'm sure his neurotic behaviour is partly cause to his disease and I'm sure he will die way earlier than he wants (not meant as a death wish or threat).

He also has an online store that sells all this worthless crap, him being in the news constantly along with his Netflix documentary he has now created a great business tricking idiots.

You mean the supplements that are backed up by his research?

1

u/12beatkick Jul 06 '26

Yep his “research”

2

u/Mission_Kangaroo_178 Jul 06 '26

I mean you can read it yourself, nothings stopping you. I'm happy to watch a video or paper you make disproving his theories.

But I'll take the free information he gives out gladly.

No, no he isn't letting us understand what "healthy" is. He quite literally has a kind of medical OCD.

1

u/delfino_plaza1 Jul 06 '26

Not saying he is, I’m saying he may come across some different treatments and does so much testing that we may have a better understanding of what being healthy actually means. What health markers to look for, what systems matter the most etc etc.

u/JanusMZeal11 Jul 06 '26

The problem is we actually cannot. He's using a shotgun to treat health so we do not know what works individually or in combination or is snake oil.

1

u/AstronomerParticular Jul 06 '26

The issue that I have with him is that the stuff that he is doing to him self is not how research works. I am thankful that he donates to actual science so he can do to himself whatever he wants.

But he should not act like there will be any useable date from him taking 100 supplements while trying out random stuff every week.

He could die at 60 or 100 years old and either way it would be completely meaningless.

1

u/delfino_plaza1 Jul 06 '26

Perhaps but he does so much testing on himself and so much bloodwork/health testing that it might be useful in the future or even currently. Who knows, every scientist of the past who we say was a genius of their time was considered an absolute freak back in their day.

1

u/AstronomerParticular Jul 06 '26

That is just not how science works. Even if you want to use yourself as a guinea pig. Every scientist on this planet will tell you that you do not get any useable results if you do that many things at once.

This man is simply obsessed with staying you just like someone who is addicted to plastic surgurie. He is like a 50 year old women who wants to look like a 20 year old again. The only difference is that he wants to have the physical health of a 20 year old. And just like that women he will also fail because this is simply not how our bodies work.

1

u/delfino_plaza1 Jul 06 '26

Yeah I know bud you’re the kind of person I’m talking about. It might inspire actual research with larger sample sizes if he and his team are able to find something that works for him. You expect him to empirically solve aging and have peer reviewed concrete research? We get it bro you paid attention in chem 1

1

u/AstronomerParticular Jul 06 '26

What are they supposed to show? If you want to see effects on aging then you need to study him over an extendet time. The issue is that he does a lot of things at the same time and he also changes what he is doing often. Every if we see in 10 years that he is extremly healthy for his age we will not be able to trace it back on anything.

Maybe if he wanted to study anything else I might be able to imagine how there might be a sudden change. But when it comes to aging this is obviously not going to happen because the best result he could hope for is that his body does not change at all.

And he can do that if he wants to maybe he even extrends his life for a few years good for him. But this will not do anything for science.

1

u/kaereljabo Jul 07 '26

I don't know if the testing results are even useful as he messes up a lot of "controls" in his body. How do we even know if the "good" result is not because of his "extreme" method A he did 5 years ago combining with method B, C, D he did last week, and not because of method E, F that he's been doing for 3 months. He did a lot of things, and it's hard to "separate" things, biology is a complex thing, and we only have 1 sample size. Personally I think this is just his hobby, and I enjoy it as an entertainment.

1

u/ancientesper Jul 06 '26

Not so sure he's doing it for humanity, I mean hes had resources throughout life to monitor his health and access to treatments, most people won't have that, so his detailed accounts of his n=1 experience wouldn't be that helpful.

1

u/Shar4f Jul 06 '26

He is rich so Reddit doesn't like him. Does not matter what he does

1

u/dryfire Jul 07 '26

I think it might have been when he kept telling everyone how many boners he gets at night. But still, autoimmune sucks.

1

u/gailthesnail2 Jul 07 '26

I find the focus on longevity disconcerting and imagine the ways he has involved his son causes psychological damage and is unethical, particularly the plasma transfusions when he was still technically a minor

1

u/OminousPluto Jul 06 '26

But he’s trying like 200 things at a time, how would they know which one is the magic solution

1

u/Mission_Kangaroo_178 Jul 06 '26

That's what the team of doctors are for

0

u/Rubicles Jul 06 '26

No team of doctors can tease out what supplement is doing what when the patient is taking 60+. Science doesn’t work like that.

1

u/MrCatSquid Jul 06 '26

No, but if he takes 60 supplements and one of them seems to vastly improve his health and biomarkers, then that narrows the list down to 60 to study.

1

u/Mission_Kangaroo_178 Jul 06 '26

Ok. I'd rather listen to the team of professional doctors rather than some random redditor though.

1

u/MrCatSquid Jul 06 '26

That doesn’t mean it’s useless by any means. If he lives an extraordinarily long and healthy life, they can go back and isolate what he did in further research. He’s only 1 person with limited time. Try a bunch of different shit, see if any of it works, go and figure out the specifics later

1

u/OminousPluto Jul 06 '26

But what if it ends up being a combo of like 6 things out of 100, you could never figure that out from how he’s doing it.

1

u/MrCatSquid Jul 06 '26

If he narrows it down to only some combination of 100 things that’s still incredibly valuable. Currently there is no list at all

1

u/Natural-Atmosphere60 Jul 06 '26

They do this all the time with professional athletes for recovery and longevity and their doctors seem to figure it out just fine. It's just tracking every aspect of their lives and their affects and maintaining consistency of whatever drug cocktail he's on I'd assume rather than changing something every day.
