For real. I got banned from /r/nfl because I said people shouldn't immediately assume someone is guilty just because they got arrested and they said I was "dismissive of D/V"

Meanwhile my daytime job actually prevents and responds to abuse, but Reddit mods here think they're changing the world one echo chamber ban at a time.

Echo chambers are a literal blight on the internet. There's the whole "safe space" thing then there's just jerking eachother off with the same opinion constantly and any hint of a dissenting opinion that DARES to even QUESTION the main narrative is met with the quickest and most aggressive nuking from the space. It's one of the main reasons Reddit gets so much flack, similar to twitter but sometimes even worse because they can fight with bans, downvotes and reports.

It's healthy to have some kind of skeptics, discourse, disagreements, etc especially if it's in good faith and not just trolling or rage bait but they see disagreement as a declaration of war.

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

Yup. And it festers in every reddit community it seems.

u/RedEyesGoldDragon Aug 17 '26

That's because one side will usually get more pull in the moderating team than the other and it'll form an all-agreeing clique. Sometimes it'll be a rogue mod or two, but often times it depends on what the owner of the sub or the mods in general agree with and they'll just operate on personal bias.

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

I appealed the ban and they wanted me to grovel and admit what I said was wrong lol. Nah, I don't need an RSS feed about the NFL that badly.

12

u/iUncontested Aug 17 '26

Yup. R/comics literally bans anyone that posts anything remotely conservative. It’s wild that comic books need to be a political echo chamber lmfao. Fucking weirdos man.

2

u/Tooldfrthis Aug 17 '26

A mild disagreement with the message of a strip posted there gets you instantly permabanned. You don't even have to openly advocate for a conservative position, they just need to think you do. And if you politely appeal to the ban, you get called names and silenced. The mods there are some of the most deranged on the whole platform.

u/RedEyesGoldDragon Aug 17 '26

The annoying thing is that some opinions might align slightly with conservative but they can be considered old school liberal opinions from like 15/20 years ago. Like super sensible takes but the graph on leftism has moves so far left that anything that even slightly pushes back is seen as MAGA.

u/SkylineGTRR34Freak Aug 17 '26

This "meme" is BS and you (I hope) know it. Both sides have their very extreme takes these days, while those slightly right or left of the center have to deal with the extreme BS either side shouts. Yea, you absolutely have those people on the left calling you a bigot woman hating POS for making even the slightest hint of a dark joke, similarly you have those on the right calling you a libtard snowflake indoctrinating kids just because you think it's not an issue gay people can marry.

u/RedEyesGoldDragon Aug 17 '26

I would argue it's lacking the right going further right as a reaction to the left going further left. There are further extremes on both sides but I can't lie, I've spoken to so many people, have family members, friends and seen people I don't know personally who hold mostly classic liberal beliefs been labeled as right wing or far right by the current media (especially in Europe/UK). If that isn't the "left" or whatever it is now going further left, I don't know what is.

MAGA is seemingly an answer to that, things getting more PC, more "woke" as people call it, people being overly offended, excusing bad behavior based on skin color or cultures, etc. The issue is MAGA and even more extreme people take it way too far. Some are just people who already held those racist or problematic beliefs shuffling into the right in general.

It's like someone saying "I think we should have stronger borders in Europe and less illegal, exploitative migration" and people will call that far right, even though they also want free healthcare, pensions for the elderly, benefits for the disabled, better unions and fairer pay, more regulation on monopoly, more taxes for higher wealth, more eco friendly infrastructure, stop using oil and start using electric/solar, improve the housing market so prices aren't ridiculous for housing etc. I've seen this happen a ton of times lately, especially by British mainstream media.

Honestly the entire way people conceptualize political opinions as existing along a 2d spectrum - whether a straight line like the above or the quadrant graph we've all seen.

That said, there is some point to the idea that the extremes of both sides have gone way off the deep end, and both of those extremes have seemingly gotten much more popular. It is unclear exactly how much more popular they have actually become.

One point that I think people should understand about the right though is, traditionally, it was pretty much a universal agreement from everyone who wasn't an actual eugenicist, that "protecting families" meant furthering economic freedoms and making society genuinely more equitable. Which requires making socioeconomic ability like the main focus. The second focus would be enforcing rules and regulations against wealthy individuals and corporations because not enforcing them is literally the catalyst for the World Wars.

This is why identity politics, as practiced by both sides, is harmful. Yes, there's a good reason to stand up for different demographics rights when they are being villainized. But the neat thing about the two focuses I explained above is they apply to everyone equally. When you focus on demographics rather than the whole, that, by definition, segregates people and gives reason for conflict.

u/TieBackground453 Aug 17 '26

Lmao. The right standing still…. Meanwhile, Trump.

3

u/Chill_Panda Aug 17 '26

I practically only go in jerk subs anymore because they at least know not to take anything to seriously

1

u/sams_fish Aug 17 '26

Similar to Tumblr about 15 years ago, not sure what it's like now as it's invite/sign up only now I think

1

u/superpoongoon Aug 17 '26

Yup. Reddit is the worst. Every one of my interest subreddits have a topic if you even question the hivemind you’re downvoted to oblivion. For example I don’t enjoy the game expedition 33 or I don’t think Justin Herbert nfl qb is elite. I can’t say either things without being nuked in the voting without ever 1 comment to constructively retort.

1

u/M0mmaSaysImSpecial Aug 17 '26

They silence anything that remotely gets looked at positively or objectively that doesn’t completely fall in line with the Reddit way, and then people see those precious red upvotes on the stuff that DOES fall in line, and they say “look I’m a good person, too! Accept me, tribe!” And then those people think that everyone who thinks anything different is a racist, misogynist, etc… and must support you know who, and it’s the you know what card they play every single time to get out of any type of healthy or intellectual discourse. It’s actually bonkers how easily manipulated a lot of people are.

19

u/Bobblefighterman Aug 17 '26

I got banned from r/sports because they got mad that they didn't know anything about a sport, and got corrected on it.

3

u/speakezjags Aug 17 '26

It takes a special kind of moron to choose to do something and treat it as a job without ever getting paid a dime. They get paid in having a tiny and useless amount of power and sniffing each other farts.

6

u/Banned4nonsense Aug 17 '26

I was banned from r/denverbroncos for telling a mod to shut up after he was going around raining on everyone’s parade regarding the new stadium. Dude was banning people because he thought the money for the stadium should be spent on other things and that the owners were horrible people. Reddit mods are the lowest form of humanity.

2

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

And I guarantee you he won't attend city council meetings and voice his opinion there, where it actually might make a difference.

1

u/raphlsnts Aug 17 '26

"Reddit mods are the lowest form of humanity."

(and they will melt if someone buys the social media and grant free speech)

u/WildRecognition9985 Aug 17 '26

Don’t you know it’s impossible for an actual abuser to make a false report.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

Innocent until proven guilty doesn't mean shit if I can use the charges filed for my own personal gain

2

u/InvisaBlah Aug 17 '26

I got banned from r/datingoverthirty for saying that dating multiple people is gross. When I asked the sub mod why, I got a reddit suspension for "harassment". And if you're reading this, and thinking "no way thats the entire story" ... yeah, I would also like to know. This place makes no sense sometimes.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

banned from polycule and stinkmaxxing

2

u/Rugby562 Aug 17 '26

I got a 7 day ban from r/nfl because apparently saying "our fans won't stop dickriding our gm" is the use of a homophobic slur.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 18 '26

women can't dickride apparently

1

u/richernate Aug 17 '26

I said something critical of Trudeau once, not violent or inflammatory, just critical. I was banned from like a hundred subs, most of which I had never posted in.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

And yet despite the constant infighting, Democrats still have no idea how they lost the last election.

1

u/michael0n Aug 17 '26

I was in a sub discussing light politics and economics. I wrote something like "so what if really rich people pay 3% more taxes". Was banned because "I hate on rich people, which is a protected class". They lifted the ban but really.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

bro that is INSANE

1

u/Charrbard Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

yeeeah, but did you though?

Been an r/nfl user for years ( a decade wtf) Said a lot of things, usually about Chiefs fans. Worst I've got is a warning for a pretty liberal interpretation of inciting violence.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

I can DM you the logs lol

1

u/tuvar_hiede Aug 17 '26

Reddit banned me for 3 days because I wished someone would double tap a video game character in a game about killing.....

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

sounds like no human was even involved and it just triggered an automod reaction

which is also infuriating

1

u/preferablyoutside Aug 17 '26

I got banned from r/woodstoving by referring to people as inside kids.

The inside kids were not happy.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

amazing lmfao

1

u/neonxmoose99 Aug 17 '26

I got banned from r/chicagosuburbs because I said that wanting to jail a guy for playing music is his truck too loud was an overreaction

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

the people who think that's an overreaction are clearly not suburbians

0

u/bobbymcpresscot Aug 17 '26

sports focused subreddit doesn't want culture war posts, oh my goooooood

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 17 '26

no, they still have culture wars. They just silence one side if it disagrees with the narrative they allow.

The post itself was allowed to remain despite having no sports related news.

1

u/bobbymcpresscot Aug 18 '26

Thats not how culture war works bud, it's your choice to engage with that type of content. You can just... not do that.

Also what post are you talking about? the mod post?

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 18 '26

No, not the mod post. Political discussions still take place but apparently saying innocent until proven guilty is wrong these days.

1

u/bobbymcpresscot Aug 18 '26

Political discussions are fine, culture war whining is not. If you can’t have a political discussion with people with different views than you without turning it into culture war whining that says a lot more about you than it does the mods.

1

u/SwedishMoose Aug 18 '26

I'm not sure why you're stuck on the phrase culture war. That's not what happened when I got banned.

0

u/Dark_World_0 Aug 17 '26

I got banned from r/publicfreakout for a similar reason, and good riddance. That sub is a massive echo chamber with power tripping mods.
