The one true stereotype: unpaid forums mods are the biggest losers you will ever encounter and they will abuse what pathetic little power they get.

What a spectacular Trainwreck that was to behold! Actually fascinating how quickly they tanked that whole thing.

73

u/CrispBedSheet Aug 17 '26

Is that the professional dog walker guy?

I remind myself, when a mod is being a fanny, that that's the sort of character I'm dealing with.

59

u/nKnownRecognition Aug 17 '26

Yeah but no.. they’re the one who couldn’t even handle the job of walking dogs for a couple hours a week.

-1

u/Nekrolysis Aug 17 '26

Im convinced they had to of been paid off, hurts thinking that someone was actually that out of touch and clueless.

12

u/Soggy_Association491 Aug 17 '26

Stuff have their own way of unveiling themselves just like that video of Democrat Socialist convention.

2

u/Brave-Ad-420 Aug 17 '26

What video?

5

u/Soggy_Association491 Aug 17 '26

This gem

https://streamable.com/r9tcq

The whole thing is like 40min+ long but just google DSA national convention.

Unfortunately, that type of pure ignorance is becoming extremely common from people who grew up privileged.

5

u/Lost-Comfort-7904 Aug 17 '26

He also admitted to raping multiple women on his facebook account and argued they were over privileged transphobics and he shouldn't be considered a rapists. Can you imagine if Foxnews really knew who they had on their show representing progressives? They'd have had him back every week.

Was it a guy?? Just watched the video on YouTube and he goes by "Doreen"????

23

u/imtired-boss Aug 17 '26

And all the rest of the mods told him not to do it and he did it anyway

24

u/nKnownRecognition Aug 17 '26

It almost seemed too perfect of a crash and burn. Everyone in the sub agreed to not talk to media because they knew nothing good could come off it. This oaf took it on themselves to destroy everything and double and triple down on their destruction afterwards. Really kind of fascinating

31

u/imtired-boss Aug 17 '26

Really put the antiwork sub in perspective as well. It wasn't a revolution against the unfair working circumstances we all live with.

It was just genuine basement dwellers who never wanted to contribute a single thing to society.

4

u/magikarp2122 Aug 17 '26

The users were legitimate, and some of the mods were, and even agreed that the person should not do it. That person just decided to ignore everyone and make a mockery of it. Almost seemed like a plant.

1

u/nKnownRecognition Aug 17 '26

Seriously seemed way to perfect for it to have been real.. but then seeing the person spaz out afterwards was like ohhh the news didn’t have to set this up. They just found the most idiotic egotistical and delusional person they could hope for.

The users of the sub all mostly had jobs and such and it was getting scarily (if your in the upper class) close to being a citizens union forming.

2

u/magikarp2122 Aug 17 '26

I don’t know how long they were a mod there, but I would love to know.

They unilaterally decided to do the interview, obviously did no prep, didn’t try to look presentable, and had the most ridiculous job possible. I really think they were a plant, or the person whose account belonged to the mod got a big payout, and some corporation took control of the account to act like an asshole after. That sub before that interview had nurses, teachers, retail, food, and many more, many working 40+ hours a week. Would be very easy for some bad faith actors to get in there and set everything up to kill the movement. The point wasn’t that people shouldn’t have to work, it was we should be able to survive comfortably working full time, and have money and time left over for life outside work.

The users think that if you are born an America you are entitled to several things and do not need to contribute to society. You can call that legitimate but I have different words.

1

u/magikarp2122 Aug 17 '26

That must have happened after the mod who did the interview started banning people from the sub for calling for them to resign and claiming it was transphobia. I got a ban from the sub, it got reversed, but I haven’t been a user of it since that whole incident.

Probably because they all look like him but are more self aware.

21

9

u/BarrelllRider Aug 17 '26

Fuckin Doreen dude. Walked right into a Fox News trap that even Stevie wonder could have seen.

4

u/Quixlequaxle Aug 17 '26

Oh yeah the "laziness is a virtue" guy. That was a fantastic interview that was pretty much what anyone who knew about that sub expected it to be.

2

u/Donkey__Balls Aug 17 '26

The saga of /r/Freefolk was really the peak saga of no-life basement dwelling moderator abuse. The entire thing was more entertaining than watching the show that the sub was based around.

There were mod alt accounts. A fake “banning” of a mod that was abusing his power and making the whole community hate him. Then hundreds of pages of Discord chats leaked proving that the whole thing was just for show to satisfy the sub, and the “banned” mod was replaced with a new mod who was the same person under an alt account. After the new leaks, all the mods turned on each other like a pack of wolves and starting airing out dirty laundry from years past. Admins basically locked the sub, fired all the mods, they tried to have a mod election that didn’t work, and it started all over with the original creator who brought back some of the least-liked mods.

It was like the perfect example of life imitating art, because basically the exact same thing was happening on the show Game of Thrones with an overall message that human beings can’t be trusted with power.

1

u/Cfunk_83 Aug 17 '26

What happened to that sub? It used to crop on my feed and some of it was interesting, so I followed it, but never beyond seeing posts from time to time… what did this guy everyone’s mentioning do? Genuinely interested.

1

u/melifIuous Aug 17 '26

God that was so fucking funny

19

u/strekkingur Aug 17 '26

They went crazy when reddit talked about limiting how many subs people are allowed to mod.

31

u/peterpangoni Aug 17 '26

I've had a young law professor who told us that the people who were in charging in nazi germany were fundamentally the same kind of people who mod subreddits nowadays. Low competence, no success anywhere, hunger for power

20

u/CrispBedSheet Aug 17 '26

The smaller subreddits I think attracted those who are genuinely interested in the topic, they tend to be reasonable.

The larger subs, especially political ones, select for those who want influence and control of the discussion, authoritarians.

6

u/MKVIgti Aug 17 '26

Correct!

There are many smaller ones I frequent who have great mods.

3

u/TedMitchell Aug 17 '26

Mods for those subreddits are often more like... curators I guess. They gather resources for the wiki, pin things that are relevant to the sub like recent news, etc.

3

u/SqueekyDickFartz Aug 17 '26

The whole reddit platform really stops making sense once communities get past a certain size. It's great if you want to create a curated space discussing your obscure hobby or interest, but millions of users discussing politics? The whole idea falls apart pretty quickly.

I had a coworker like a decade ago who had a 12 year old son who was a mod of a shockingly big sub (somewhere around 250k users). There's apparently no required vetting process, no interaction with reddit itself, etc. It always makes me laugh that Obama could do an AMA where he verifies himself and promises to disclose the secrets on aliens, and a 12 year old on their lunch period could just perma ban him from the sub.

reddit is a fun place to fuck around and argue with people, but in no way is it a reliable platform for important discussion.

2

u/IrregularConfusion Aug 17 '26

Sounds like the people in politics today too.

9

u/Real_Azenomei Aug 17 '26

Reddit's own little parking wardens.

4

Reddit Mods and HOA Boardmembers

6

u/United-Bite4135 Aug 17 '26

Yeah that’s basically the mod of r/sports lol

5

u/blueditUPson Aug 17 '26

what happened over there?

2

u/United-Bite4135 Aug 17 '26

I can only speak to the drama sports mod had with r/AFL it was along time ago and I have not forgotten

https://www.reddit.com/r/SubredditDrama/comments/52jfk5/progressively_escalating_continuum_of_drama/

-2

u/Proud_Arachnid4956 Aug 17 '26

You don’t wanna know

3

u/aquabarron Aug 17 '26

And somehow still have the audacity to tell anyone they don’t like facists

5

u/InstantSword Aug 17 '26

I got banned on a science sub for expressing my opinion which just happened to be "transphobic." Not even a discussion or warning was had. Transphobic is made up rhetoric. I'm going to start saying trans-transphobic, to describe people who make up a word to slander those with different opinions

You're biophobic, bro

3

u/Alaska_Jack Aug 17 '26

This sounds like a shallow stereotype -- unfortunately there is genuinely a lot of truth to it.

Those with no power in their own lives often turn to the illusion of control online.

1

u/localtuned Aug 17 '26

Lol how long you been on reddit. Sometimes these people are paid by the companies or or firms.

1

u/OkDriver1A8D6 Aug 17 '26

I worked for T, a company that does moderation for T***k, a major broadcaster/streamer on the internet for a bit over a season. What i can tell you, it is the most over the top, offensive, and outright criminally adjacent thing I've ever witnessed. I had been given a tip to not shower before my interview, based on a friend of mine who'd worked there prior. Not only do they train you for two weeks, while outright making jokes to make light of pedophilia along with other major crimes, will flat out ignore reports of real criminal activity, if not found through the system. You work for a system, for pay, to do exactly what you're told. Caring too much for what you do or for actual consumer safety, is apparently grounds to be fired. If you can't prove a 'policy was broken within one single video clip' you cannot ban a user. The 500lb land whale runs the show with the others, promising they can get kids rich through it, molesting children the same as any other barely hidden hideout for the FBI.

1

u/Cosmonate Aug 17 '26

I wear my bans as a point of pride

1

u/jrodthebipole Aug 17 '26

it is all they got

1

u/Ashe_the_Witch Aug 17 '26

That’s not really fair to the mods of numerous niche subs who are really just there because they love their niche.

1

u/eternalrevolver Aug 17 '26

So, every single local city subreddit ?

1

u/ThePinkBaron365 Aug 17 '26

The r/art ones are some of the worst

1

u/Optimal-Fix-2997 Aug 17 '26

Wait til you meet discord mods lol

1

u/Champigne Aug 17 '26

Legitimately who else would have the free time and desire to do a completely thankless and unpaid job?

1

u/East-Response6672 Aug 17 '26

Bit bullshit that all the mods on this site are unpaid, kind of seems like a billion dollar company should step up.

1

u/juzz_fuzz Aug 17 '26

Clinging to the little power they can get instead of growing, changing or learning as a human being. Applause

1

u/LuckyandBrownie Aug 17 '26

Not a mod but there is a caveat: small niche subs often have good mods.

1

u/2_wild Aug 17 '26

I do not moderate any serious subs but your take is wrong, probably because you are overestimating the general public’s ability to be civil on the internet. I actually moderate patently unserious subs. Yet people consistently manage to take things in directions that result in unbelievably and inappropriately rude comments. So when a topic that lends itself to such comments enters the mainstream discourse or whatever, it is easier to just ban the topic than to deal with the inevitable onslaught of “mod review needed” notifications. It’s unreasonable to expect unpaid mods to read immature back and forth childishness between adults to determine ‘who started it’ and what should be done. So ban a topic and stop it before it happens or don’t and risk someone who has been legitimately cyber bullied reporting the sub and the sub getting removed.

1

u/DeltaFang501 Aug 17 '26

Ok. Depends on the size. Those small niche ones. They are nice. Just the average Joe

The big subs on the other hand.....

0

u/World_of_Eter Aug 17 '26

Eh I've known some cool ones but it was for private forums that had at most a few hundred users so moderation was required extremely infrequently.

-7

u/Scewt Aug 17 '26

Then whenever the mods don't do their job perfectly and answer to the requests of the community in banning certain posts or removing bots its: "WHERE ARE THOSE UNPAID FUCKS I DEMEAN AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY AND FUCKING DESPISE? DON'T THEY DO THEIR JOBS!?" then repeat that post 1000x until the issue is solved by said unpaid fucks.

Those people really don't win unless there is some magical sub that really likes their mods out there somewhere.

5

u/Rightsidebestside Aug 17 '26

This. I think they should conduct a psychiatric evaluation of Reddit mods, i'm sure they'd come up with results of mental instability

4

u/Wise-Field-7353 Aug 17 '26

I know someone that mods a discord for a subreddit and has a weird identity thing about it. It's so pathetic

2

u/Samurai_Meisters Aug 17 '26

On another account I was a mod. I founded a sub that become decently popular. Then I realized that I was doing an unpaid customer service job.

2

u/Pitiful_Software_430 Aug 17 '26

Wait til the those with a vested interest decide to infect your subreddit to the point of being unmanageable, and then you have to hand off the keys to a supermod who totally isn't being paid by a company that benefits from having a controlling interest in your former sub.

1

u/Samurai_Meisters Aug 17 '26

Well I handed it off to the number 2 mod who I became friends with and still talk to years later. He cares about the sub, and only gets a little drunk with power.

2

u/TheBonVivantLives Aug 17 '26

They are probably getting paid. I've seen a real uptick in mods pushing agendas for corps. It would be cheap propoganda / advertising.

2

u/CestQuoiLeFuck Aug 17 '26

The kind of people who would have patted themselves on the back for diming out Anne Frank. Fucking losers.

That’s why they do things like this. They don’t get paid, and it’s easier to just ban the topic than try to police every discussion.

Don’t necessarily agree with it, but that’s likely why.

1

u/Excellent_jun91 Aug 17 '26

lmao theres this one sub the name is southafrica. theres a zecknd sub people made which is south_africa. why?, because the first one th3 mods are... idk how to put it? theyre basically into american politics like they hate elon musk etc. but if you ask anything to do with anything else that their mods disagree with they ban you and send you DMs berating you etc. its fucking hilarious they basically propaganda power trip

1

u/Pitiful_Software_430 Aug 17 '26

It's not for free.

No major subreddit is being controlled by a dude in a basement. Not anymore.

This is one of the most popular websites on the planet; any company with any sense at all would make sure they were influencing the subreddits that impact their product. It's the cheapest form of PR available--nothing else comes even remotely close.

1

u/Opaque_Cypher Aug 17 '26

Reminds me a little about how the Walton family likes to get volunteers to help with their various projects in Northwest Arkansas (crystal bridges, etc).

Just a fraction of the interest they make on their multi multi (multi) billions of dollars could easily pay the volunteers a very decent salary, but people are always like ‘woo hoo I get to help out on a big Walton project? Count me in!’ And they do the work for free…

1

u/screwikea Aug 17 '26

I've made a couple of basic points many times over the years that people seem to get pissed about:

  • Moderation on any site that makes money should be a paid job, especially a giant site like Reddit
  • Doing so fixes a shitload of problems
  • Moderated content shifts a lot of liability onto the corporation, so it's never going to happen

All of the mods are out here giving thousands upon thousand of free hours to a megazillionaire. It's like everyone has forgotten that that Reddit is a glorified forum.

1

u/DimensionSuch8188 Aug 17 '26

To be fair, Reddit before used to be much more "free" and open. Like subreddit are made by people but then Reddit admins started telling mods what to do and went public. Old Reddit wasn't like today Reddit.
