It's insolvent, not on the verge of collapse.

We planned for the boomers to retire and live a long time in the late 80s, beefing it up something fierce well in advance.

Yes, that fund is starting to dwindle. Payments will have to go down to 80% in the next decade... but boomers are going to start kicking the bucket as fast as they were born. Another pandemic and Bob's your uncle... or, was your uncle...

A mild increase in contributions is certainly an option, and has the added benefit of removing the ability to fear monger over this really simple, predictable, and totally expected situation.
