Anybody that would pay all the money they do to see artists complain about politics and social injustices during their sets, instead of playing another song is a fucking idiot. Hetfield is right. End of story.

You’ll get downvoted because Reddit is brainwashed but you are 100% correct. I paid to be entertained, say whatever bullshit message you have on social media

Redditors and their unending need for celebs to affirm their politics is so pathetic

I mean, Hatfield made it political by saying they aren't political.

lol you think a little message about killing kids or corruption is buillshit??

During expensive high end entertainment ? Absolutely. If you have a message that’s strong in your heart and wanna make some change, setup a protest, march in the streets, do some live streams on social media. Don’t do it on the customers dime.

But then when people protest and march you'll see people say "oh this is really doing something lol" like you can't do shit without people criticizing you

All I’m saying is, If I drop $600 on a Bruno Mars concert, I don’t want to hear his thoughts on abortions.

Doing it at a concert isn't doing anything either, other than wasting my time.

Lol I don’t get why saying stop killing kids will make people so angry they don’t want to watch anymore. Everyone should agree with not wanted kids to be killed.

If you go to see RATM then you expect a political rant, fine. But Metallica aren't like that. Yes there are political themes in their songs, but that doesn't mean they'll give you a sanctimonious lecture on top of it. They let their music and lyrics speak for themselves.

But why say anything at all? He didn’t have to make a statement about not making a statement….

4

u/chilliboy217 8h ago

So you want him to make a statement but only if it’s the statement you like ?

u/trprpy_ 8h ago

Nope. That’s not the point I’m making. He’s allowed to say whatever he wants and people are allowed to feel however they want about it. He didn’t have to say anything at all just to say “we aren’t going to say anything at all.” I guess nothing means anything lmao

He wanted to

The statement WAS political. Taking a backhanded swipe at Macklemore didn't have to be done, except to stake out Hetfield's own political stance.

Exactly

Can you direct me to the concert where that happened? A band refused to play songs and instead started a surprise lecture? The worst I can find is Bruce Springsteen talking during a two minute break between songs. I didn't see people walking out or dismayed but I wasn't there.

No one is "paying to hear their politics" you pay to see the artist you like, then they choose what to do with their time, if between sets they want to call out injustice, because that's literally the messaging in the music, it's not a crazy leap. Just Stfu you poser

What we’re saying is we don’t give a shit what they think or what their lyrics are. Just sing them and outside of that shut the fuck up.

If Hetfield wrote the lyrics “I hate Majestic-Marcus, he’s a twat”, I’d sing along and have a good time. If he addressed the crowd in between songs to say “Majestic-Marcus is a twat”, I’d feel like he was wasting my money.

"I don't want artists to transport any messages with their art! I just want to consume a product!"

When artists try to appeal to an audience like you, that's what's called selling out.

> "I don't want artists to transport any messages with their art! I just want to consume a product!"

Not what I wrote.

Put whatever message you want in your art. Write and say whatever you want. Put whatever message you want out into the world through any and all means, except… on stage. Shut up and play.

> When artists try to appeal to an audience like you, that's what's called selling out.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with ‘selling out’ and the idiots that get mad at bands for becoming successful are a cancer.

“Enlightened” posers mad because “brainwashed” Reddit has to make everything political :(
