I just don't see why we're surprised that some rich guys don't wanna lose their comforts and sponsors and clean public image.

Metallica does not give a shit about politics, they wanna play their show, , and ensure their fans enjoyed it, and cash a fat check.

Nothing wrong with that.

u/welfedad 15h ago

Yeah they may have in their youth but they wanna keep living their current life style.. so they keep their mouths shut and keep the $$$ flowing in

They do care about politics. They literally testified in front of congress in favor of policies that were important to them.

3

u/frothyundergarments 13h ago

And that's very different than the message he was trying to share that everybody seems to be so up in arms about without actually having heard it

u/beerbrained 1h ago

The problem people have is them shitting on artists that support a cause. There's plenty of artists that are a-political, and nobody cares, but his statement was the opposite. It WAS a political statement.

u/Yupperdoodledoo 13h ago

Rich people not giving a fuck about other people’s suffering is definitely wrong. Just not surprising.

u/ToreyJean 12h ago

That is a bizarre take.

1

u/odedjay 9h ago

Yup
A little childish

Metallica’s most famous album is political, so they don’t give a shit about politics anymore** is more accurate

5

u/Southern-Donut4185 14h ago

That's called marketing. They captured the hearts and minds of a generation of rebellious youth and made millions.

2

u/GayKnockedLooseFan 14h ago

Call it whatever you want, they got famous by being political. He sounds at best like a fucking idiot pandering to middle age white men. Miss Rachel is more metal than Metallica at this point

2

u/InternationalToe6035 10h ago

True on all counts 👏🎯💯

3

u/Southern-Donut4185 14h ago

He probably is an idiot a lot of times. A good musician and an artist I enjoy, but I don't expect these kind of people to have a true/solid backbone. I mean, sheesh. These guys were very outspoken when piracy was hurting their bottom line so much. What do you expect?

2

u/ToreyJean 12h ago

Speaking out against what was an actual CRIME isn’t political.

3

u/ZoharDTeach 15h ago

The Black Album isn't political at all.

0

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 15h ago

It literally has the Gadsden snake on the front cover.

4

u/ZoharDTeach 15h ago

So? Did you listen to it?

2

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 13h ago

Yup. There’s a song called “don’t tread on me” at track six. This shit has been popular with libright morons since the 1960s.

Hetfield himself said the song was a reaction to the anti-establishment tone of ...And Justice for All.

Not political my fucking arse.

1

u/GayKnockedLooseFan 13h ago

The cognitive dissonance is crazy

2

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 11h ago

It’s like they’re completely fucking clueless. Like Paul Ryan saying RATM is his favourite band.

1

u/Michael-Brady-99 10h ago

An album from the 80’s when they were in their 20’s.

Reading too much into what the average 20 somethings have to say about the world is not my way of living. Metal has always had a political edge but a lot of it is for public perception and image of the band. I would not get to deep into it. It’s a formula to sell albums.

1

u/GayKnockedLooseFan 8h ago

If they were looking to be commercially successful at the time they probably would’ve picked a different genre. Not everyone sells out their Portugal beliefs as they get older. Crazy of me to think they believed in what they were saying when they made it idk

0

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 15h ago

Then he shouldn’t have brought it up. He can be a dancing monkey all he wants, but the second he expresses his worthless opinions he’s fair game.

0

u/mcscrufferson 15h ago

I mean, that depends on what’s going on. Can you imagine how that stance would look in historical context if say, I dunno, a genocide were going on? Anybody with a platform and that belief would be morally obligated to speak. If James Hetfield doesn’t hold that belief then yeah, no need to get political. If he does then not speaking up is cowardly and pretty fucked up. I’m thinking he probably doesn’t since he’s had no issue speaking about Ukraine and this is less a blanket statement about political speech and more a veiled criticism about a stance he doesn’t agree with.

u/SigmaMaleNurgling 15h ago

Nobody is judging Elvis for his politics, this is silly.

1

u/mcscrufferson 11h ago

Elvis served in the military and it had a huge impact on how he was perceived by the American public.

1

u/SigmaMaleNurgling 10h ago

When we talk about Elvis’s legacy, hardly anyone is talking about his statements about the Vietnam war or The Cold War or Communism. It’s about his music and the impact his music and himself as a performer had on American culture.

-1

u/tasteMyRottenHoop 15h ago

You’re right. He’s judged for having been a chomo.

1

u/Alternative_Bug_4089 14h ago edited 11h ago

Ahaha people mad that Elvis married his 14yo cousin.

Before anyone gets mad, she was 21 when they got married, they met when she was 14.

Edit: not cousin, I'm just a troll. She was 14 when they met though.

2

u/ToreyJean 12h ago

They weren’t remotely cousins. 🤣🤣

Her dad was an Air Force officer in West Germany when Elvis was stationed there. A friend of Elvis‘ and of Priscilla’s family asked her if she wanted to meet a rock star. The rest is history.

Yes, she was 14 at the time. I would have probably wanted to meet him at 14 as well.🤷🏻‍♀️

Not saying anything else that went on was right or wrong, but they were NOT in any way related other than that they were both of the same species.

4

u/ZoharDTeach 15h ago

That's not their responsibility. They're entertainers. You trying to lay that at their feet is heinous.

-1

u/MythicalCaseTheory 15h ago

This is how I see it. They don't want to speak about politics right now because the politics currently suit them and/or their stance is controversial. As soon as their views are on the right side of history they'll shout that shit from the rooftops.

1

u/ToreyJean 12h ago

So you’re a mind reader. Fascinating.

1

u/MythicalCaseTheory 12h ago

I knew you would say that.

-1

u/mindfungus 15h ago

If Metallica was paid cash to play by a certain dictator of German/Austrian connection, think they would be situationally and morally aware to be political and speak up against tyranny? No? Then something is wrong if someone has a lot of popularity and says “Don’t be political!” Bro - politics is what runs the world and determines history.

0

u/ToreyJean 12h ago

This is the dumbest take in the thread.

1

u/mindfungus 7h ago

No you😝

0

u/SuperDoubleDecker 14h ago

Because it's cool to have integrity and solid values. They don't need the money

1

u/Southern-Donut4185 13h ago

But they are not going to suddenly be people who stand for integrity because we think they should.

You don't become as big as Metallica by standing for what's right.

People talk about "fuck you money", well, these guys have it, yet they will not open their mouth and speak on something like this. Tells you all you gotta know, they ain't what you want them to be, they are what they are.

Me personally I can enjoy the music and accept most of the artists I grew up thinking were cool, untouchable dudes, are flawed humans just like me. I never was a super fan, maybe a couple times a year I'll listen to Metallica with intention, but they do rock and I will not deny it.

-2

u/SuspiciousSubstance9 14h ago

Metallica opened their Vegas show by complaining about how people are too political in their shows. They stepped into the political ring by doing so.

If they truly wanted to just play their show, then they could have just said nothing and played their show.

1

u/RedBrickBoat 14h ago

Exactly, calling other musicians out for their political acts does more than nothing, and if they wanted nothing they would have done nothing.
