Read the first Issue of Midnight Spider-Man. Gonna be honest, I think its promising.

Post image

Midnight Spider-Man was something I was curious just to see how it was done. And, the first issue at least, looks promising.

This Peter is also quite interesting. Him being an social media activist against ill practices in science is something that at first glance seems odd, but it works. Also, the fact that Uncle Ben has an case against Oscorp is interesting, leaves mistery about what Ben knows... or well, knew.

Wich also leaves in suspanse who he was talking with before the Spider thing. And also what happened with Peter's parents in more detail, is kept somewhat vague what happened to them.

Felicia Hardy in here is interesting. What she will be, has many openings. Many have been saying she could be an Makima like character, and I can see that. But I think its still too early to see.

Also, gotta say, its quite smart to make Peter turn the night he turns 18, its an good symbolism and paralele with adulthood. Also the fact that this happens right after he signs the contract with Oscorp also brings around the entire thing that is said this entire Issue "Power makes monsters".

Overall, its an good start. If it continues like this, we might have an interesting and fun interation of the character.

Do I recommend people to read it? Yeah. Go read it.

Now, lets see how this goes. You got my interest Marvel and Phillip Kennedy Johnson, don't fuck this up!

What happened to that guy in the tube, followed by the notes after, was haunting. Midnight Oscorp is on some Umbrella corp shit.

They grabbed his KID after, man…

14

u/zOmgFishes 10d ago

Norman sees what absolute Joker was doing and went: write that down!

8

u/SwordoftheMourn 10d ago

Well, at least Norman isn’t secretly a demon… yet

9

u/Jemima_puddledook678 10d ago

The green goblin being some sort of actual goblin-like creature and a literal monster would be on-brand though, and go well with everything else so far.

7

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

Honestly, this felt creepier. They focused a lot more on the disposability of homeless/poor people in the eyes of Oscorp.

11

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

I felt like there was also a bit of terror in Doctor Connors trying to lecture about ethical concerns and none of the students listening. It's a very realistic apathy to the seemingly unstoppable corporate and government corruption.

Man I’m hoping they don’t pull an ultimate where it’s a cool story and a neat universe….and then they pull the plug.

53

u/BlondeBlazerrr 10d ago

I’d say they learned from their mistake this time but, yeah, that’s more wishful thinking. Who knows. I hope it stays longer than Ultimate did too.

2

u/That-Rhino-Guy Spider-Man (TASM) 6d ago

To my knowledge the writer suggested he has plans for at least 25, 50 if not 100 issues so there’s that at least

4

u/Layton13 10d ago

Who knows, maybe Marvel will cycle through alternate universes like this every 2 years with occasional returns to the new Ultimate one?

I wouldn't mind it too much.

Certainly would keep the individual universes fresh.

11

u/Mister_Sinner All New All Different 10d ago

It's going to be a combo of 2 things: A quality story (keeps us buying) and sales numbers.

Or...

They do just pull the plug on the whole thing.

2

u/Remarkable_Commoner 10d ago

At the very least, I hope that they don't end it in a way that makes continuing it later a pain in the ass.

2

u/JorgeBec 10d ago

At minimum I hope it goes to 36 issues.

If it’s successful I hope it goes to 50

48

u/CourtofTalons Classic-Spider-Man 10d ago

Agreed. It's really giving me Absolute vibes. And it's got a relatable Peter, who's worried about money while being annoyed by the rich. This book's going places.

47

u/AllCity_King 10d ago

Love the angle on how Peter makes his “great responsibility” mistake.

Spoilers ahead I think the angle that Peter goes against his morals to work for Oscorp, which in turn gets Ben killed by association, is interesting. It’s not as black and white as failing to stop a criminal. It speaks to a more moral basis of responsibility rather than blunt action. And he’s forced to combine with and wear the creature that killed Ben because he fell right into Oscorps trap by bringing it home.

16

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

I think what makes it hit especially hard, is that Peter still doesn't like Oscorp. He just had the chance to achieve his greatest scientific dreams dangled in front of him and was pressured into signing a contract. It shows how desperate people get pushed into making choices that harm themselves. Just like that guy that tried to get the job at the beginning of the chapter, only to be brutally tortured and killed.

14

u/Infinite-Detective-8 Bombastic Bag-Man 10d ago

Not really Oscorp's trap when they didn't even seem to realize the spider was loose in the first place. It's moreso an unfortunate accident that came as a result of Oscorps lax safety protocols. It's still their fault, but it wasn't intentional.

13

u/AllCity_King 10d ago

True. The Spider wasn’t a trap, but luring Peter into a contract absolutely was, which led to the spider.

7

u/mikewheelerfan Spider-Man (MCU) 10d ago

Yeah, they definitely planned to use him for experiments anyways

2

u/pelrun 7d ago

They wanted to kill three birds with one stone - punish Ben for persisting with his legal action even though they were never going to lose anyway, take out an anti-Oscorp blogger, and procure another cheap test subject for their experiment. So even though Peter gets bitten accidentally, it's still what they were ultimately intending to do.

4

u/Infinite-Detective-8 Bombastic Bag-Man 10d ago

Agreed.

1

u/xellos49698 10d ago

I'm pretty sure the Peter's father fell into the same trap working for Oscorp, but we will see.

u/masterofunfucking 10d ago

It’s definitely going to make traditionalists mad. A lot of my older subscribers haven’t signed up for midnight but almost all of our younger subscribers are signed up for all midnights

11

u/Vhd-k Spider-Man (Movie) 10d ago

Yep, Just read it and it's really different from what Spider-Man feels like. There's nothing Spider-Manly. Really curious on what it's gonna do next!

4

u/ParanoidPragmatist 10d ago

Im not young anymore but seriously considering midnight being my first ever comic book subscription.

Just have to find out if there is a comic shop near me

2

u/SonofaSpurrier Bombastic Bag-Man 10d ago

I’m with the youths!

14

u/ComposerConsistent83 10d ago

I thought it was sort of like overly edgy.

There’s things I liked about it, but found it kind of a like a throwback to like the worst parts of 90s comics.

Edit: like when Ben gives the homeless guy money and then he’s hit by a car and arrested by the cops. I was like “oh this is some like Frank Miller type shit”

2

u/throw23me 4d ago

Late on this but I agree with you, it just felt the most edgy out of the three Midnight releases. A lot of the "horror" just felt like it was more for shock value or mean-spirited than "scary."

I'm still going to give it a fair shake, there's two more issues coming out this year and I'll be picking them up. If it's all just more along the lines of this I probably won't continue past that though. Not really my cup of tea so far.

1

u/ComposerConsistent83 4d ago

I’ll read another issue or two before passing final judgment also.

I don’t think it’s bad conceptually I just felt like I was reading some All Star Batman or something.

-1

u/HazelRahRahRah 7d ago

I think it's the opposite, this genuinely is how libs think the police acts nowadays

13

u/Sonderous_strife 10d ago

Yeah the world seems kinda grim.

12

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

I really liked how this story seems to present its own statement like "with great power comes great responsibility" but with "power makes monsters, every time". It's cool that this is a concept that Peter wants to disprove rather than accept. I feel like this is going to be a very thematically interesting run. Reminds me a lot of the feeling I got reading the Absolute comics early issues.

7

u/JoDioto 10d ago

I'll be honest, I wasn't invested when I saw the previews, characters were very manga/anime like. But that story had a firm grip, solid really solid and the art overall was really beautiful with great shades of horror

5

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

The inner monologue was really gripping right from the beginning. The story was a lot more cohesive than what I expected from the initial premise.

1

u/Brence1984 9d ago

I wasn’t a fan of the Manga’ish styling. However…it does somehow make the entire thing even more contrasting when they go gore and guts to be honest. Doing it in a style akin to for instance Walkers work on F4 would probably be a step to far?

7

u/syxtfour Bombastic Bag-Man 10d ago

I went into it knowing the Midnight stuff probably wasn't going to be my thing, and I was right. I didn't like it at all. But at least I gave it a shot.

5

u/Ronzonius 9d ago

Uncle Ben dies? Dude, spoiler alert!

1

u/Distinct-Actuator128 Spider-Man Noir 9d ago

Sorry if thats a spoiler, it technically is. But c'mon, thats like saying Peter Parker becoming Spider-Man because of being bit by an spider is a spoiler.

2

u/Zealousideal_Fill_24 9d ago

Sarcasmnis new to you isn't it

1

u/Distinct-Actuator128 Spider-Man Noir 9d ago

You would be surprised how some would genuinely call saying that Uncle Ben dies an spoiler.

2

u/Zealousideal_Fill_24 9d ago

Yeah thats probably true

5

u/Kurtisimus 10d ago

I got my online store up this week and Midnight Spider-Man has by far been the most popular book. I sold out of my main covers immediately this morning. I actually found Fantastic Four to be the strongest book, but it'll be interesting to see how they all unfold.

5

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

That's great! I loved the first chapter for Spider-man, but I haven't gotten the chance to read Fantastic Four yet, and that's the one that seemed the most interesting! I really hope this Midnight line is successful.

4

u/mikewheelerfan Spider-Man (MCU) 10d ago

I really enjoyed it and am excited to see where it goes. Lots of mysteries set up this first issue…it didn’t go where I expected either, especially with Uncle Ben’s death

5

u/weeklyshonenmag 10d ago

I wonder if they’re gonna give us a suit beyond this homemade looking one. Not sure how it’d work with the massive spider on his chest and all. This probably is the suit, huh?

5

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

The spider may not stay on his chest forever. It could merge with him or be able to detach or even give him the ability to alter his form later on. Lots of possibilities!

6

u/CarlitoNSP1 Black Cat 10d ago

From what I've seen, it's a "Check out the first trade once it's out, then continue following if you like what you see" book.

11

u/Turbulent-Range-4448 10d ago

That was depressing. Can't wait for the next issue

14

u/Toasteate 10d ago

I don't like what they did with Felicia for now. Might change my opinion in the future

6

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

I was wondering what Black Cat fans would think of her. I found her character unsettling but interesting in the way she seems to lure people into Oscorp, but I understand that it makes her look way more morally bankrupt than her usual self. I still feel like there will be more nuance to her decisions, though. Like she has some personal reason for working with Oscorp or maybe she's going to betray them. I guess we'll find out!

4

u/ParanoidPragmatist 10d ago

I think its exciting to see where her story might go.

Kinda boring if she just starts the story as good person.

1

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

Yeah, I was interested. I just think the people she works for/with are so evil that it will be difficult to justify her involvement unless she was also coerced into working at Oscorp. I'm excited that I don't know what will happen with these characters.

1

u/ParanoidPragmatist 10d ago

I dont know, I can think of at least 5 ways to either explain(not really justify) her actions or set up a change of heart, if that's the direction they want to go in. If they dont want to just make her a villain in this one.

1

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

That's fair. I'm expecting a similar change of heart or explanation for Hank Pym.

2

u/Toasteate 10d ago

I just find it uninspired and a lazy choice

3

u/SonofaSpurrier Bombastic Bag-Man 10d ago

I was offended

3

u/Toasteate 10d ago

There are so many other character for the role they gave to Felicia

6

u/mastergooner56 10d ago

I low-key hope because Peter and Felicia are both adults we still get to see Peter x Felicia

8

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

I feel like after what we've seen this chapter they'll have to really humanize Felicia to make that believable.

1

u/Pleasant_Salad9345 10d ago

He barely turned 18 and she is late 20s to early 30s. I hope not lol

1

u/HazelRahRahRah 7d ago

Hell yeah!

1

u/mastergooner56 1d ago

MY MAN FELICA X PETER IS TOP THREE SHIPS

3

u/NightmareMoon32 10d ago

Very promising from this first issue! I like it a lot thus far. Has a similar vibe to DC's Absolute universe, which is great because I love that line

3

u/xellos49698 10d ago

I don't know if Midnight Spider-man is going to be that popular as Absolute Batman. Midnight X-men blew me away though, so it's a strong start for the series. I'm planing on getting the the 2nd Midnight Spider-man issue for sure, I want to read more.

4

u/superseri18888 10d ago

💯

Midnight X-Men had the better debut issue. I think the "M-Pire" concept has potential if they go all the way with it

3

u/AGreaterGoodNIN 9d ago

It didn’t really work for me. Im for sure giving it another issue, but definitely left me very underwhelmed

3

u/BaronGrackle 10d ago

I just read the premise. Funny enough, I recently watched S2 of '90s Spider-Man (Neogenic Nightmare), where Man-Spider was looming over him.

I really dug the episode where it did take over, and we lost Peter's narration for an entire episode.

Does Peter still narrate when he transforms, in this version?

5

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

We don't know yet what the full extent of his transformation is. Most of this chapter is character building and establishing the setting.

4

u/Dragoryu3000 10d ago

I’m not super excited about it yet, though that’s through no fault of the comic, really. Body horror and horrible corporations are natural fits for Spider-Man, but I’ve seen those things quite a few times between the Ultimate and Absolute universes. It’ll need something more to really feel novel to me

2

u/Key-Entrepreneur8263 9d ago

For me it's only one confusion.

Peter has a YouTube channel where he does social activism, criticizing and calling out big corporations like OSCORP for doing unethical stuff.

He has a speech about doing his own thing and proving you can be great and good at the same time.

Then... he accepts a job at OSCORP?

Other than that, pretty good first issue except for the out of place Felicia panel. Reminds me of the dogshit fanservice in Fire Force.

5

u/LeNightmareSquad 9d ago

I read a thread that compared these characters to chainsawman characters so Peter dropping everything he believes in because a beautiful woman told him to makes sense in a sad way.

4

u/Key-Entrepreneur8263 9d ago

Yeah, but was Peter ever described in that way in main continuity?

He was never the type to sacrifice his morality, especially when he was so adamant hours before, over an attractive woman.

I'm looking at this from the perspective that at its core, Midnight Peter has the same moral compass as Main Peter, similar to how Absolute Universe does it which is what its based on.

Peter being another version of Denji just makes no sense.

1

u/comicsrule39 7d ago

How many idealistic college and law school students want to change the world then end up doing PR work for Raytheon or defending ExxonMobil after it pollutes our water ways ? It's an all too common occurrence

1

u/Key-Entrepreneur8263 7d ago

But Peter had a thing going on with Connors, he had another means to "change the world".

1

u/pelrun 7d ago

Unfortunately, the world is deliberately set up to force you to choose between your principles and the ability to eat, sleep and keep your loved ones safe. Peter makes a single bad decision and the marvel bossesuniverse ensures he suffers for the rest of eternity.

2

u/Effective-Mall4730 10d ago

The only thing i've saw of this take on the character until now is that infamous POV shot from Felicia's boobs lmao, i gotta read this asap

2

u/creamoftuxedo 10d ago

I had... very low expectations. I don't know if they were 0, but I didn't expect to like this book at all. And I came away fairly intrigued. There were a few things about the art I didn't love (some pages were borderline just blobs and scribbles) but the dialogue was top notch, and the story feels familiar yet fresh. I was also a little confused by the last few frames, but I'll definitely be reading issue 2 to see if that clears things up for me. The "Spider-Man" himself though we've seen on cover art is hot trash, so it's going to take some of the best writing ever to keep me interested if that's going to be a permanent look.
Midnight Spider-Man #001: 7.1/10

2

u/eap9711 10d ago

I totally counted this book out when it got announced awhile ago, and I didn’t care much for the redesigns based on the variant covers I seen initially. But damn did it blow me away with a really cool new spin on spidey’s origin. It’s probably not for everyone but it’s scratching the itch for all the types of story elements I like. I’m loving the French manga fusion art style and the world building. The body horror scenes reminded me of art by James harren And Akira. Black cat and bammf are already fan favorites. That one panels pov… Evangelion vibes. Having the symbol on his chest be an actual spider is really badass, how has that not been done by now ? The spiders going to be able to talk to him? 🔥 This feels fresh. I hope we get ateast 10 issues to let things pan out and let the creators cook. I like what I’m seeing. The potential is high just from the setup alone, this could be one of them ones. Spider man deserves the absolute treatment and resurgence from a new take. For a new era. Something like this has been long over due for spidey, it’s a really cool and edgy remix of the classic story we all know. he could run around the city for a little bit in that homemade suit (shirtless) and eventually graduate to a look more reminiscent of his classic costume. You already know Osborn and Otto are going to be absolute menaces. Imagine if daredevil gets a cameo in this universe as a mentor/ kakashi - sensei type. Peter’s using his favorite comic hero to inspire his first look 🔥

2

u/halfcrzy 8d ago

Finally read chapter 1 and I was bored. I thought Peter was a bit of an idiot in it. Probably wont be continuing to read this one.

3

u/TheMightyMonarchx7 10d ago

I don’t like the costume

24

u/M0stlyL0st 10d ago

From what PKJ said in an interview, the costume we've seen so far isn't the final version of the design/transformation, just the starting point. As the book goes on, Peter is going to physically evolve.

9

u/Vhd-k Spider-Man (Movie) 10d ago

So they're going for a bleak, body horror style? That'll slap

8

u/0rangelantern 10d ago

Man, that's a shame. I actually think it's super cool. I was hoping it would grow on people like Absolute Batman's symbol and stature did. Something about Peter being shirtless and barefoot while still wearing the mask, makes him seem more vulnerable, and more like an underdog to me.

0

u/GanyuMain2506 10d ago

Same. It looks kinda simple

0

u/PoownSlayer 90's Animated Spider-Man 10d ago

Same. Really dislike it.

1

u/chuchuxoxo 9d ago

So, what exactly is the Midnight Universe about? And will Felicia have any significant roles? I didn't read the whole description because I don't know if there are spoilers, by the way, where could I read it?

1

u/Stefan_the_Campbell 9d ago

Not a fan of the art so it was 1 and done for me. And it looks like it's going to be a slow burn, which I'm not interested in. Hope it lasts though, for everyone who likes it.

1

u/Insanityskull 9d ago

So this is NOT like Marvel MAX, more like a Gory Manga Universe - Seinen (Adult Men), specifically. There's body horror that seems way more brutal and explicit than MAX Punisher, but it's also not quite as "Mean-Spirited" as the MAX Punisher runs. There's a lot of pretty anime-like panels, and the characters almost look like Disneyesque at times, but then you'll see Boobs literally shoved into faces. Which might make some ridiculous people mad, but I like the equal-handness of Beauty, Gore, Sex, and Innocence.

And Peter Parker being a streamer is a good way to explain his nerdiness and wise-cracking jokes as a hobby and a defensive mechanism. The only thing I have to complain about is: It's a Spider-Man #1, and you're not gonna see Spider-Man. I don't need to see a perfect Spider-Man already in his suit, I don't even need a Flash Forward, just give me a few panels more (Cut the White Text on Black Background Pages!) and show me Spider-Man's transformation in the first comic. The rest of the comic (which I liked) is fluff in comparison.

1

u/comicsrule39 7d ago

I loved it . Such a timely story about the grotesque level of late stage capitalism we are living in, all tied up in a body horror story about the origins of our favorite wall crawler. PKJ and Scietronc knocked it out of the park

1

u/BurtonXV84 6d ago

I read it with also having 0 expectations, and out of the Midnight's, and also from a few reviews, I'm now seeing and felt it's the best out the 3. Hopefully the momentum from the 1st issue carries through.

1

u/peepyboy 5d ago

I only managed to read it today because I missed the preorder cutoff at my lcs and had to have it shipped, but I really liked it, in super keen to see where it goes, I kinda thought the influencer stuff was a bit cringey at first but I must say it does kind of work, I wish we got a bit more of Peter and Ben's dynamic but I can see why they needed to push through it all in the first issue.

I'm excited to read the other 2 in this universe.

1

u/zstephable2 9d ago

The design for this spiderman looks like shit

1

u/nomad_in_ct 9d ago

The part where OsCORP is doing human experiments on people, ...hmmm where have I seen that before, oh I know Absolute Batman.

2

u/Distinct-Actuator128 Spider-Man Noir 9d ago

If we follow that, then I have seen an Corporation doing human experiments first on Spider-man 2099.

Absolute Batman didn't create the concept, that has existed since who knows how long.

2

u/SkadiQuickMetaMemer 6d ago

except Midnight come out ending ultimate exactly because marvel want absolute batman

2

u/MeBigMeScary 9d ago

absolute batman invented that kinda thing

1

u/Leather-Ad-8432 8d ago edited 8d ago

I just read it and didn't like it at all. The choice of art for this is a horrendous decision. Also cats dying in horror is a tired old trope.

0

u/ModelVV 10d ago

This gonna be an absolute Batman situation where the #1 price skyrockets?
