Thinking of dropping out

I (19M) started studying abroad in Romania Bucharest but just after I arrived here I do not like it like the others do. Other people I know look like they are having the time of their lives while I'm stressing out in my dorm room alone. I've talked with my parents and they say it's a nice place but I'm not liking anything here. I feel so empty and I have no energy to do anything and it has been a common occurrence for people to be loud at night until 4am. I haven't gotten any more than 4 hours of sleep. I'm thinking of leaving for home tomorrow and staying there. I don't want to disappoint my parents but I genuinely feel like I cannot do this.

Title: International Gap Year Student from Pakistan | 1420 SAT | 3 A*s A-Levels | EFC $10k–$11k per year— Where should I apply for Early Action (EA) in the US with good aid?

Stats & Background:

Status: International student from Pakistan, currently on a gap year (graduated high school in August 2026).

A-Levels: 3 A*s (Accounting, Economics, Business)

IGCSEs: 6 A*s, 2 As, 1 B

SAT: 1420

Expected Family Contribution (EFC): Around $10,000 to $11,000 per year.

Current Plan: Applying Early Decision (ED) to NYU Shanghai, but looking for non-binding Early Action (EA) options in the US as backup.

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student from Pakistan currently taking a gap year after graduating in August 2026. I am submitting an Early Decision (ED) application to NYU Shanghai, but I also want to apply to US institutions through Early Action (EA) to build out my backup options early.

Given my financial situation, my family can contribute roughly $10k–$11k per year, which means I’ll need significant financial aid or generous scholarships to make studying in the US feasible.

With my academic profile (3 A*s in A-Levels, 1420 SAT), which Early Action (EA) schools in the US should I target? I'm looking for colleges and universities that offer non-binding Early Action and either meet high demonstrated need for international/Pakistani students or offer substantial merit scholarships for an EFC in the $10k–$11k range.

Appreciate any recommendations or advice!

Studying at Beijing (Normal University)

Hi all, I recently solo travelled to China and decided I want to learn Chinese. My city in the UK offers a niche and almost too good to be true (but is true) course that is a dual degree with Beijing normal uni, so you spend 2 full years there. I was wondering if anyone had any experience of studying here or being an international student in Beijing / China? thanks! ( I’ll be entering the course at 19, so will be 20 when I move to Beijing).

NSLI-Y Need of Advie and if any Alumni are willing

Hi, I'm a Junior in high school and I want to do International Relations in college. I'm highly interested in language and culture.

I've been interested in study abroad since middle school. I recently found NSLI-Y and was able to convince my family for the summer program. I have heard that the essay portion is the most important part of your application. I have been rereading and rereading and need a new pair of eyes.

If any Alumni are able to look over my essays and give advice I would much appreciate it!

Open Doors Russian Scholarship

I’m trying to hunt Open Doors Russian Scholarship. Is anyone granted this scholarship and can you share your experience.
Is it worth considering?
My background is from Business Administration, I choose Business and Management, Economics and Econometrics Subject field under this scholarship.
Submitted my Motivation Letter and there’s an option of Entry Test in the first phase. What this entry test will be about?
Do I need to prepare before giving that Entry Test and I’m unable to find a syllabus or curriculum about which this entry test would be?
What to Expect!
If anyone had some experience with this scholarship, do share your relevant info.

American Student Seeks Advice!

Hello! I am looking for advice about my future studies in Italy! I am an American college student who will be studying abroad next year, and can’t wait! I’m curious to know what would be appropriate and normal clothing to bring and wear as I know that standards when it comes to clothing elsewhere are much higher than those that most hold here in the states. I’m not the type to wear lounge or activewear out during the day, I almost exclusively wear jeans or slacks with sweaters, blouses, and t shirts, and wear converse sneakers or boots almost every day. I want to feel comfortable with my outfits when I am in Italy (will be in Florence/Firenze). What are some things I definitely shouldn’t wear out when there, and some things that would be best to blend in?? TIA!!

I don't know what to do with myself or my studies

I think im gonna withdraw from my business program because I feel like everyone here is a robot. I literally cannot socialize with these people in any way, plus the program itself is not interesting to me. it all feels so obtuse, so boring, it doesn't stimulate my mind, idgaf about it, I only wanted to go into marketing later. I can't even get a refund for this semester's fee anyway too

my other plan involved going into data science which I disregarded because I'm not a math lover. I also get easily frustrated and since data science has coding as well I doubt I would have made it. even though it always sounded cool in my head (it's dumb I know)

and then there's film. acting. something that always interested me, was always in the back of my head, and I wanted to get into that industry so so much, even when I was a kid. I still do, but I thought "that won't make me any money". but at least there's creativity, and I lack it nowadays in my business program. and I miss having genuinely interesting people to chat with

I was thinking of going back to my country for more than 9 months (because the next intake is fall 2027), working as much as I can, and going back to Canada, trying out the film studies program. I don't even know if they'll give me another study permit. shit I don't even know if they'll accept me into the new school, it would be my first time creating a short film. I have ideas, and I have a vision of how I want it to be like, but I don't have the practice.

can someone tell me if I'm just messing up my life, and should stay in the business program? thing is I already tanked my 2 tests and my grades are locked at 75% most likely. . can't get it higher. ive missed some classes. this is my first semester too btw. I'm struggling

Canadian physio students/grads in the UK, what do you wish you'd known about getting licensed back in Canada?

I'm a Canadian in first year of a BSc Physio in London, planning to move back and practise in Canada. I've started reading about CAPR credentialing and it's a lot.

For anyone who's done it (or is doing it): what caught you off guard? Documents you wish you'd saved during uni, timelines, costs, exams?

Any advice appreciated. I'm trying to get organised early !

not sure where to study or what to do

i’m from the uk, and when i finished college i went to university in my city for 7 months before dropping out because i felt like the course was not right for me. i am leaving a lot out, but because of home life and other reasons i could not attend university and have time for my assignments and it was affecting my grades, so it was the best choice to drop out at the time. i spent these 3 years just working and travelling and i am grateful i did that because i gained experience and felt more ready to get a degree.

i am kind of unsure what to do now… i dont know where to go and i didn’t get the best grades in college so my confidence is low. london is very expensive in terms of accommodation so i was thinking if i spend all that money, i might as well go abroad?

i have seen countries like germany and france being listed as good countries to study in, but can anybody give some advice? before i dropped out, i was studying business management, but in college i did criminology, business and politics. i have interest in many different fields but i am more concerned about which course can actually get me somewhere in life.

i am 21 now and i feel behind in life, all my friends have either graduated or nearly finished university and i have nothing right now. i still don’t know what i want to do in life, i have a lot of interests and such but career wise… no clue. i want to make strong friendships with people and learn and grow aside from getting my degree, if anybody can help it would be great for me

I'm very indecisive and I need help to choose my destination

Hi! I'm going to do an Erasmus exchange next year, and I need to remove one city from my list to end up with my 3 choices, but I'm veeery indecisive and I find qualities and flaws in all of them! My list is: Limerick, Edinburgh, Leeds and Birmingham. I'll study English/French literature. I also made a post to find testimonies about living there as a disabled person, but my goal is also to get more general information. Here are some of my questions:

-What was your monthly budget?
-Did you enjoy the cultural life there?
-Was it easy to make friends?
-In terms of housing, were you on campus or elsewhere? How much did you pay? Did you have a good experience with your roommates?
-How was public transport (price, reliability, coverage)? Could you get around easily without a car?
-Did you feel safe in the city?
-Looking back, would you choose the same city again? What would you do differently?

Thank you for your help!

ciee summer abroad scholarships

hey! i'm applying for ciee's tokyo language and culture summer abroad program for this summer. i wanted to ask how much people normally get in scholarships? for reference my family of 5 makes around 80k per year, i have a 4.0 gpa. while this is low income for my area, i'm not sure how ciee considers it. i'm working part-time attempting to save 8.2k, but it seems pretty much impossible. i am also curious how much flights cost through ciee? i have around 1.7k saved for my flight, which is the average to tokyo where im from, im worried it may be more through ciee. thanks!

Hello, I'm a Grade 11 student  who wants to study abroad for Shs and college

I'm a Filipino HUMMS student in Grade 11 student, I'm a constant honor student, and I ranked first in our class on our 1st term. I genuinely want to study abroad with a fully scholarship, however I don't know where to start my journey.

I come from a middle class family and I study at a public school here in Lanao del Norte, Iligan City.

I had an average of 93 when I was a grade 10 student and on my first term I had an average of 95, I consistently participate and have won multiple times  in competitions in the field of Journalism and  Public Speaking. I'm not bragging but I just wanted to see if my achievements are enough to get me a full scholarship abroad.

I've taken an interest in studying abroad a few months ago, and I have been researching it but to no avail. I am also willing to work while studying abroad. Any referrals and Information are very much welcome and appreciated. 💙⭐

Can I Get a Scholarship Abroad with a 3.2 CGPA and a Delayed Graduation?

I enrolled in my undergraduate program in 2020. My degree requires me to complete 8 semesters over 4 years, with 2 semesters each year. I completed my first 6 semesters (up to the third year) without any major interruptions. However, due to unavoidable circumstances, I had to take a one-year break before resuming my studies from the 7th semester. My major is in Environmental Science (Oceanography) .

Unfortunately, I had to retake one course in the 7th semester, which means I now need to complete a total of 10 semesters, including 2 repeat semesters. As a result, a degree that is supposed to take 4 years is taking me around 6 years to complete.

My question is: How much will this extended study period and my academic record affect my chances of pursuing higher education abroad?

I really want to pursue a master's degree abroad on a scholarship, and I have already started exploring opportunities in China. However, my academic results are not particularly strong, and I expect my final CGPA to be around 3.2.

I would really appreciate your valuable advice and suggestions.

How do you actually shortlist universities abroad without getting overwhelmed?

Every university seems to have a different fee structure, entry requirements and application deadline. I've started researching options, but now I have too many tabs open and still can't decide where to apply.

How did you shortlist your universities? Did you focus more on rankings, course content, fees or job opportunities after graduation?

Is pursuing a sports-related master’s degree abroad worth it?

Hi everyone!
I’m currently a third-year university student in China, majoring in Physical Education.

I’m thinking about pursuing a master’s degree abroad, particularly in sports science, sports performance analysis, or other sports-related fields. I’m especially interested in basketball.

I’ve mainly been considering Australia and New Zealand, but I’m open to other countries as well.
My main goal is not just to study abroad, but to hopefully find a job and build a life there after graduation. I enjoy sports, but I’m also open to other career paths if they offer better opportunities.

I’m wondering whether studying a sports-related master’s abroad is actually worth the time and money, especially considering the job market for international graduates.

I’d really appreciate your thoughts on a few questions:
Is a sports-related master’s degree abroad worth it in terms of career opportunities and return on investment?

How difficult is it for international graduates to find jobs and stay after graduation?
Which countries and sports-related fields would you recommend?

For those who have studied similar degrees abroad, do you regret your decision, or would you do it again?

I’d love to hear some honest opinions and real experiences, even if they’re negative.

Thanks in advance!

CIEE??

For those who’ve done the ciee study abroad+internship program, is it legit? Are students notified of which company they’re doing the internship at before departure? How’s the vibe and is there much freedom?😭

Is a gap year worth it before going to study abroad ?

I'm currently preparing for my masters degree by which I'm going to apply to different scholarships. However, considering all the paperwork it requires, it made me consider to take a gap year (sep2027 -june/july2028) and apply for the program in december 2027 so that I will join it in September 2028. The gap year will take place after my graduation, and during it I will work a part-time job in an airport, complete my language certificates in Italian and Japanese (beginner level) and potentially join internships which I of course will add to my CV when I apply. I am worried if things will not go the way that I expected or that the universities will consider the gap year as a weakness. If anyone has gone through this situation pls share your opinion and advice I will be eternally grateful. 🙏🏻🥲

How realistic is English EEE in Japan with a 1370 SAT, low 12th Math (56%), but strong hardware ECs?

Hey everyone,
I’m an Indian student targeting the October 2027 intake for English-medium Bachelor's programs in Japan. I want to study Electrical/Electronic Engineering, specifically focusing on the micro/hardware side (chip design, microcontrollers, computer architecture) but macro side like power grid works too.
My academic profile is pretty chaotic, and I need a realistic reality check on where I can actually get in, or if I should grind to retake my SAT Math.
my_qualifications**:**

  • 10th CBSE: 94%
  • 11th CBSE: 54% (my father had an accident which and other family issues which caused alot of stress
  • 12th CBSE: 74% overall (56/100 in Math — I checked out of school mentally and the teachers bullied me the whole year and i became super depressed)
  • Current SAT: 1370 total (700 English / 670 Math). 92nd+ percentile globally.
  • Main Project/EC: Built an 8-bit APU (Arithmetic Processing Unit) in vertigo and currently thinking about making a 32-bit multi-action one (if it helps). wireless remote circuit made with esp32 which i can remotely turn the switch board on and off. and other minor projects like a vault to hide files on pc, music player and an ai chatbot and LoRA (unrelated to EEE ig).

My Questions:

  1. Is the University of Aizu, kyushu and tsukaba realistic? initially i planned to apply to them thinking my sat would save me but idk anymore
  2. Do I have any shot at any good Universities? (would have applied to waseda but its super expensive too)
  3. Should I retake the SAT Math? I can probably grind my SAT Math up from a 670 to a 730–760 max maybe not sure but I can't push it beyond that, and my time is limited. Would a 750 SAT Math overwrite my 56% CBSE score for schools like Kyushu/Tsukuba, or is it a waste of time?
  4. Are there any other reputable English-taught engineering programs in Japan (like Shibaura or KUAS) that genuinely value actual hardware building experience over high school board scores?

honestly if i had decided Japan only a year earlier i would have learned the language and could have applied to the course in Japanese medium but it is what it is now, any guide will be greatly appreciated

I don't want to waste time chasing impossible dreams if the admission filters are completely rigid. Be brutally honest. Thanks.

should i look at any other country? but most are expensive or the ones like germany need foundational year but im already in my gap year ( i graduated high school in 2025-2026)

and no i dont plan to study in india at all
