Spooky Season [Megathread] Spooky Season, Halloween, or Autumn (cozy or not) Vibes 👻🎃☕️🍂

Hi wonderful readers,

We are heading into fall in the northern hemisphere (aka spooky season and/or cozy season!) and we are already seeing a very large uptick of very general requests for this time of year that lean very “low effort” (see rule 3) or are “book discussions” rather than requests (see rule 1.)

We are posting this thread to hopefully give some of our readers a place to start and titles to try, *if they don’t have anything specific in mind to ask for in this realm and just want “anything!”

So, please tell us some books you recommend for “spooky season” or that give you the “autumn cozy vibes”:

Any favorites?

Any hidden gems?

Anything specifically “Halloween” holiday related?

Anything especially autumn and cozy?

Anything you plan to read/have on your TBR?

Looking forward to your replies!

Happy reading, all!

*We of course want everyone to continue posting your spooky and cozy autumn requests on the sub if have some (very minimal) specifics that are more customized to you as readers, or what you are in the mood to read!

**Feel free to also scroll the “Spooky Season” post flair for other posts and recs. too! Doing this may help you articulate your own post for further suggestions too!

Fiction books for a brainrotted 10 year old?

My little brother’s only hobby is basically playing Roblox. He doesn't do anything else (maybe playing with his toys when his tablet time is over) but he gets bored after a while, so I want to introduce him to reading.

I can sense he enjoys fiction and stories with emotional depth; I just need to find something at his level that matches his taste. Here's a list of series, movies, and games he likes:

- The Amazing Digital Circus (this one is his favorite ever)

- Adventure Time

- The Amazing World of Gumball

- Regular Show

- Backrooms (2026)

- Luca (2021)

- Moana

- Sam and Max Save The World

- Evade (Roblox)

- Shrek

I want to focus on TADC and Backrooms. It seems he enjoys stories with an eerie ambiance that aren't strictly horror because he gets scared easily! He ends up crying when he sees monsters/ghosts/demons. He loves dreamcore and liminal aesthetics, too, but he also enjoys comedy and adventure.

Oh, he also loves cats and cute/kawaii stuff!

So, I'd like something that is easy to read so he doesn't get frustrated, but if you have slightly more advanced recommendations, I'd appreciate those as well (not too advanced, of course) for him to read later.

At 33 I realize how sad my childhood was. Suggest me a book.

As said in the title. I'm realizing many things recently. This is very weird. I'm what people consider "smart" and "aware".

I feel so stupid for not realizing this about my own life earlier.

It's not like I thought I had a good childhood. I always knew it wasn't, I mostly avoided talking about it.

But it's worse than I thought.

Books have always helped me process things.

I prefer fiction and memoirs. Do you have any suggestions for me, ideally with an adult protagonist dealing with the past (controlling or abusive parent, but not like a cartoon villain with only bad sides)

Thank you

Suggest me books for a twelve year old, who doesn't want to read fantasy or scifi.

My daughter likes Diary of a Wimpy Kid, some Roald Dahl books (not all of them), and Heart. She's tried to read some children's fantasy books, but has told me she wants to read more *real stuff* without magic.

We read Little Women together a few months ago, but she disliked the prose. It might have been because of the Spanish translation (it's a little odd even to me), but she's not an advanced English reader/speaker. The story, though, and the characters, were to her liking.

I'm planning to get her the next installment of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Diary of Anne Frank. What other books could I get for her?

Other things she enjoys are: drawing, basketball, running, sewing, some slight unsettling/horror vibes (she read and liked Coraline), and pop music and chick flicks from the 2000s.

Suggest me a book to understand the nonbinary experience

I'm looking for a book with at least one non-binary character, ideally where it talks about their experience a bit. It can be either fiction or non-fiction/memoir. I'm a bit picky and mostly just like literary fiction, see below:

-NO fantasy/sci-fi (please no Psalm For the Wild Built, I unfortunately just couldn't finish it)

-NO horror/thriller

-The non-binary person should be a regular human and not a robot/elf/alien/mystical creature (see point 1)

-NO YA/new adult

-I'm not a big fan of historical fiction or romance but can sometimes enjoy it if it's really good!

-Memoirs are appreciated too (I read Dear Senthuran and really enjoyed it)

-I also enjoy magical realism (but again, no fantasy)

-Would love smart, acerbic, thought-provoking, and/or beautiful writing

Children’s Books Own voices children's books about/from Native Americans?

My six year old learned about Native Americans in kindergarten recently. Unfortunately, because we're not from the US and there is very little awareness about these things here in general, it's all done in a pretty racist I-word & Cowboys way.

I've been looking everywhere for some books to read that might give him a better perspective, but everything seems to be written by white people and contain tons of harmful stereotypes.

Chapter books, picture books, fiction or non-fiction, I'd happily take any suggestions you might have!

What book made you say “fuck it” and start a new life?

I'm talking about the kind of book that makes you put it down and suddenly question why the hell you're living the way you are. The kind that makes you want to quit your job, drop out of university, move to another country, or just throw your entire life into the air and start over.

The Stranger and Dark Matter did that for me. It's hard to explain, but after finishing them, I felt like I was looking at the world through a completely different lens. My problems hadn't magically disappeared, but they suddenly seemed so insignificant compared to the sheer possibility of being alive and getting to choose what to do with it all. I felt this weird sense of freedom, like I could just say "fuck it" and build a completely different life if I wanted to.

That feeling has faded, and I'm craving it again.

So yeah, give me the books that genuinely fucked with your worldview and made you want to do something drastic with your life. Not just books that made you feel inspired for a few days, but ones that made you question everything and got you living differently.

I am in love with an Irishman named James Joyce, but have read all his books. Where to next to solve my hangover?

As the captions says, I just finished reading all of James Joyce (in chronological order). I had soooooo much fun with his language and the structure of his books. Each novel seemed to progress and build from the previous one and take the novel to an unseen place that the previous book failed to reach.

Not sure if that makes sense! But it's how I feel. I'm hungover now and can't find anything that excites me the same way Joyce does. I feel the need to be turned on to something sexy and exciting like Joyce! Please not something boring or obvious like Samuel Beckett or a modernist like Joyce. The weirder the better!

Non-fiction Books about the effects of the cattle industry on the environment and climate change

Hello. So I need to deepen my knowledge about the consequences of the cattle industry on the environment since in a few months I'll have to lead a workshop about vegetarianism linked to the environment. Or maybe about why to become vegetarian but focused on the environmental aspect of it.

I am vegetarian but mostly due to some documentaries, a short ted talk, and the general opposition to the inhumane treatment of the animals in the industry and that the agriculture dedicated for cattle and poultry could be used for humans instead. But in order to lead a workshop I need to be well documented and present factual information

I want to emphasize that it has to be linked to its effects on the environment and the repercussions for climate change, not so much the ethical side of it. Or any book about agriculture and climate change works as well

Thanks!

Just started reading books again, and I'm looking for a good non- fiction/ autobiography

I'm trying to get into the habit of reading books instead of doom scrolling. I just finished Norm Macdonald's Based on a True Story and Mark Lanegan's Sing Backwards and Weep. I tend to prefer non- fiction and autobiographies, especially about weirdos, outcasts, artists, etc. Any good recommendations on what i should read next?

…that will have me wanting to stay in their world forever

• Upvotes

The Daevabad Trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty are some of my favorite books I’ve ever read, the writing is so incredibly immersive and I found the world so beautiful.
Have you read them and loved them? Recommend to me others you’ve loved, I’m in such a slump right now and need a new world to love!!

Editing to add - please no sloppy romantasy nonsense 🙏

Book on how the Romans became the Italians

Thomas Cahill, who died in 2022, was beloved for his “Hinges of History” series, most prominently “How The Irish Saved Civilization,” which sold millions of copies. I read this, plus two other books in the series, “Sailing The Wine-Dark Sea: Why The Greeks Matter” and “The Gifts of the Jews: How A Tribe of Desert Nomads Changed The Way Everyone Thinks And Feels.”

In the Afterword to one of these books, he said his next book would be about “How the Romans became the Italians.” As far as I can tell he never lived to complete that book.

Is anyone aware of a book that covers this same material?

SciFi Looking for books with a rich galactic community like Mass Effect

I really like the world-building and diversity of aliens in Mass Effect, and I want to read something similar. I’m a fan of political intrigue, space operas, and speculative world-building. Any really interesting alien cultures out there?

LGTBQ+ authors/books I want to real more book with trans men/gay protagonists.

Hello! As the title suggests, I would like to read more books with FTM or gay protagonists.

I (not so) recently read Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White and it was probably the best book I’ve ever read. It completely opened my eyes to a part of fiction I didn’t realize wasn’t completely online.

After realizing that people do write about people like me, I’ve been trying to find other books within that demographic. Unfortunately, I come from a small, extremely religious town and have a limited number of bookstores and a limited number of people I can ask for recommendations from.

I recently moved states, and found myself smack-dab in the middle of the gayest and transest area I’ve ever seen personally. And while I am more comfortable waltzing into Barnes and Noble asking for a book- I still feel a bit weird asking people who don’t know much about trans and gay men for recommendations.

So I turn to you! The wonderful people of Reddit who I know would never lead me astray! Please! I know you all read far more than I do and I know you have good recommendations! Any genre will do but I do have some preferred ones.

My preferred genres/tropes are:

-romance/romantasy
-dystopian
-historical or period/era fiction
-religious fiction
-enemies to lovers
-YA is a-okay!!
-roommates
-horror/ “spooky” books (as described by the lovely woman in B&N)
-body horror
-monsters of any and all types
-minimally spicy/kinda spicy (I’ve realized A LOT of romance revolving gay men is like, purely smut. And while I enjoy it as much as another guy, I would like more story than spice.)
-magic realism
-found family
-QPR

They do not have to have all of those (by any means!!) or any at all! Those are just my preferences towards genres since that’s mostly what i’ve read. But please recommend me any genre! I love reading things outside of my comfort zone and would love to get into a genre outside of my own tastes!

Any and all recommendations will help! I found exactly one book at B&N that promised a trans main character and literally jumped for joy! My boyfriend was delighted I found one and the woman at B&N was also delighted to have found one for my collection.

It means the world to me. And it means the world that these types of books can be published.

Thank you so much, I appreciate it more than you all know. Thank you!

Any genre! Romance for men

• Upvotes

Looking for a good romance book directed towards men, told from a male POV, ideally of a lonely man finding love and starting a family and living happily ever after, or potentially ending in a tragedy.

Looking for a book to read with girlfriend

• Upvotes

In a couple days my long distance girlfriend will be staying at mine for 6 days. I would like to find a short mystery/adventure book so that each night we can read each other 10-20 pages and have finished the book by the end of the 6 days. It would be fun if there was a continuous buildup throughout the week so we're excited to read the next part each night. I would appreciate any suggestions (can be from a different genre if you think it would be suitable).

Looking for nonfiction books on the science of sleep.

I've had lifelong insomnia and I'm sick of doctors telling me they don't know how to help. I want to start researching this topic on my own. I'm looking for some good books that actually go into the science of sleep.

Children’s Books Female Friendship book for preschooler

• Upvotes

Looking for a cute book for a four year-old that focuses on best friends and friendship. Not looking kids books that focus on lessons, like fighting or sharing. I am OK with animal friendships but preferably human girls.

It’s for my daughter’s best friend. The family tends to like older style illustrations rather than the new style.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Literary Cigarette fiction

I heard a few social media posts coining a unofficial sub genre of fiction booke. Its described as "short bleak existential books that feel like your smoking a cigarette at 2am". I assume the most famous example would be the stranger by Albert camus. But I'm looking for that vibe

Fantasy A gay book with dragons

The title says it all. I'm looking for a fantasy book with dragons and also gay men. It doesn't have to be romantasy at all, I'm totally fine with romance being the subplot. I usually don't read books that focus mainly on romance, although I'm open to get into that aswell. It'd prefer for it not to be YA, but am open for suggestions.

I wanna get back into the fantasy genre but as a queer man, I just prefer to have queer male protagonists (or at least side characters). I'm up for anything fantasy from magical realism to high fantasy.

Seeking read-alikes Books similar to my favorite series (unpopular) to get out of reading slump

I've been in a book slump, and my go-to is rereading my favorites. However, if anyone has similar tastes, I would love to find a new book/series to dive into and fall in love with. I have trouble because my go-to rule is if booktok likes it, I probably won't.

I tend to read Young Adult and prefer fade to black and low to no cursing. I can handle a decent amount of violence that's found in dystopian books lol.

I do enjoy romance, but there has to be a bigger plot adventure. I get romantasy, but there's gotta be some dialogue and inner dialogue that isn't just the characters thinking about each other 24/7.

I enjoy when there's moving plot and action, and bigger issues to face than just getting together. I'm always craving action and good fight scenes. Or characters getting injured. Love political intrigue.

Random info. I think royalty and princes and princesses are fun. I have an obsession with pirates and ship and sword adventures (my top 2 fav series-as listed below-have pirate adventures by book 2). So send any alike my way. P.S. I'd be interested to try spy novels.

I realized I have a different relationship with fantasy than most people. I think I like lower fantasy worlds. I enjoy people having powers, but I've learned that fairytale mythological whimsy isn't my type. (Other than Percy Jackson)

Books/Series similar to:

Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer
Darker Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab
Legend by Marie Lu
Daindreth's Assassin by Elisabeth Wheatley
The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

Children’s Books What books could I read to my 10 year old as a bed time story?

• Upvotes

My son wants me to tell him a story every evening and I've run out of stories in my head. He reads a lot by himself but mostly books for teenagers/adults because he is at a very advanced reading level. But before bed he just wants to hear something with content that's easy to understand for someone his age. So I promised I'd find some children's books I can read to him. He's not picky about the genre. Any recs?
