This is the only one that doesn’t make sense out of the rest of them. Ki control is the whole argument, but this mfer is in super saiyan…. Even if he lowered his ki beyond belief, the 50x multiplier SHOULD make him invulnerable to the weight of an elephant…

Powerscalers: This doesn't make sense

Toriyama: It's mad funny though

Watching dragon ball just for the epic fights makes you miss out on all the hilarious shenanigans.

"Bro that episode where they play baseball is such filler!"

They had yamcha get yamchaed, idc what anyone says thats writing genius.

“Well, you don’t know how to drive a car either, do you Piccolo?”

“LEAVE ME OUT OF THIS!!!”

Tbh he's enough of an air head to notice a fricking elephant walking towards him until it steps om his hand

The off guard argument make sense to me

I’m in agreeance but CMON! Super saiyan even off guard :(

like.. could you technically be SSJ Blue, be off guard, and an elephant kills you?

I think its reactionary, like when you scrub your toe and say ouch before you even feel it

He was in ssj when krillen threw a rock at him

There were a ton of elephants walking by. He hesitated to try to avoid getting his hand stepped on, and timed it wrong. His guard was 100% up

How the hell could he time it wrong? They have whole fights where they're moving faster than the human eye can perceive. Those must have been some damn fast elephants.

Ki control argument is kind of dumb when you consider that all the strong fighters that weren't from Earth were awful at it while still being insanely strong.

I agree that Ki control is not the explanation here, it's just bad filler writing, but that bit about aliens that didn't know Ki control isn't how it works.

Ki control was specifically an earth thing Vegeta learned while there. When and how when he couldn't even sense power levels before then, I don't know, but let's just say he's a fighting genius and move on. Before that, he was at "maximum" constantly and only with larger attacks like Garlic Gun was he able to go above his constant output by gathering it up for a burst.

After learning Ki control, he can keep it low to preserve stamina, but can also increase it higher to than his normal maximum for more than just beam attacks. Nobody in the Freeza Force could do that, always fighting at their maximum, with Freeza being the only exception. And like most things at this point, he had no mastery over it, since he wasn't exactly the type to practice. It's not that they were weak because they couldn't control their Ki, but that they were strong even without Ki control. Their natural Ki was high enough for that or they had transformations that boosted it.

Raditz who could tank Piccolo and Goku like it was nothing, because his Ki was that much higher than what the two of them could output even with Ki control. It took a highly charged Makankōsappō to beat him. A technique that stores a lot of Ki for a pinpoint attack. Meaning Piccolo didn't have enough Ki or good enough control over it to harm Raditz in regular combat, but could store enough of it for a strong enough beam attack to win.

So to summarize, Goku being hurt by an elephant is bad filler writing and Dragon Ball has A LOT of inconsistencies with how the power system works, but Ki control ain't it.

The casual rock throw was when he was a super saiyan as well

That was filler however.

When I bring up something in an anime and someone tells me it's filler

Well we are talking about feats that aren’t someone’s fanfiction so… yes?

Talking down on the greatest episode of television to grace our screens.

Shame.

So was the elephant

Still agree that the elephant is just funny if you take it at face value, but the x50 number is pretty sus. The Daizenshuu article that published it wasn't referring to the Super Saiyan state when they said it, they were referring to Goku himself, in an article about his progression throughout Z.

The page has lots of photos of Goku and his power level at each stage, with a small blurb describing what Goku was like at each big breakpoint. Under the photo of Goku in SSJ, it has a small blurb that reads "[This is the form he took] when he finally awakened Super Saiyan. His fighting power went up by times 50, so that he was even overwhelming for full-power Frieza."

The number was never meant to be a flat multiplier for all SSJ in all contexts. It was the multiplier specifically for fighting ability (as opposed to an omni-buff for all stats), that specifically Goku, at that specific stage in his life, experienced for that one battle given his mental state and battle-readiness.

x50 is a solid indicator for the level of battle readiness that SSJ gives, like, Trunks vs Mecha Frieza displays something similar so you can say he probably has something similar going on, but it can't be extrapolated to other situations without acknowledging that it's not perfect, and the further you get from Namek the more vague the comparison has to be.

You mean to tell me Goku, the guy that could carry an elephant ever since he was a child, that Goku getting decades of training under multiple people claiming to be God and having a 50x multiplier to his stats can't handle 1/2 the weight of what looks like an average to small size elephant? Dragon Ball has always been so inconsistent
