Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

You should see Sanderson's anecdote about someone offering to adapt The Emperor's Soul. They came back to him with something where the only things from his actual story were some character names. (Because everyone knows that a novella-length shorty story that mostly features two people in a room discussing the nature of art and identity really needs to be turned into a globe-trotting pirate adventure!)

My favorite part of Emperor's Soul was the shenanigans and definitely not the philosophy behind the idea of self and what makes a person

Why would anyone make an adaption of that though? Like, clearly that is slapping the name on a different story. But reading The Emperor’s Soul did not make me think it was movie material.

So, Brandon mentioned he thinks it's because Hollywood doesn't want to do original stories, so by slapping the name on a different story, the screenwriter can get their original story out under the guise of an adaptation.

Which basically explains Halo. Generic war story with some Halo elements tossed in for flavor.

Maybe he could exploit that and write stuff that’d deliberately make a good movie?

the screenwriter? maybe, but it's a completely different way of doing things.

Sanderson I mean.

Considering he is currently writing a script for the first mistborn movie of 3 (with Apple TV producing it), and has two more tv shows in development, I think he's doing fine.

I think it could possibly be done as a stage play.

Yeah, maybe a tiny cast, mostly conversations, some small theatre. Then maybe you’d film that if it was successful. Be very indie scale.

Is... is the pirate anecdote the reason he wrote Tress of the Emerald Sea?

No, he wrote Tress as a gift to his wife and his wife being his agent said that he had to publish it.
