Hated Tropes [HATED] Adaptations done intentionally without help from the source

Halo TV show: Before the show came out, the writers were praising their decision to not look to the games for inspiration when making the show

God Of War TV show: Chris Judge, the actor of Kratos in the games from 2018-Now, spoke up about his dislike on the show not hiring anyone who worked on any of the previous games. One of the original creators of Kratos also spoke up about them not having faith in the adaptation.

Supergirl 2026 film: the director for the film not only said he decided to not read Woman Of Tomorrow, the comic the film is adapting, because he wanted to do his own thing, he also didn’t look at comic art for inspiration to design Lobo and instead used an AI image generator to design Lobo’s look for the film

It’s the paradox of Millar being an edge lord hotshot that he doesn’t feel like a bad adaptation can taint his work so he doesn’t get involved with them, resulting in the adaptations being free to improve on his work.

The problem was never that we were too dumb to get that Nemesis is supposed to be a bad guy. The problem is that many of his stories were deliberately made to be as edgy as possible, with rampant violence and sexual assault alongside plot points that are just there to be shocking without actually contributing anything to the plot (like comic Big Daddy actually just being a psycho whose wife left him, so he decided to turn his daughter into a killer and sic her on some random mob boss for fun).

He also early on responded to the question “How is the Ultimate Marvel universe different from the main universe?” And his response was “It’s just better.” Which is a very early ‘90s Todd McFarlane/Rob Liefeld answer but given in the early 2000s with no original characters to back it up. Millar’s writing that wasn’t shock value and edgy was just dumb. Nick Fury fan casting a movie about The Ultimates and Professor X fanboying about the Hellfire Club while they’re stage-whispering four feet away about killing him were particular egregious.
