miscellaneous [Interesting Trope] Attempts at fanservice/virality that failed not because they were hated, but because nobody noticed them or cared at all.

1) Hoopy the Hoop, Portal (2007) When you defeat GLaDOS and her room is destroyed at the end of the game, debris rains down in the final cutscene, including a big metal hoop that bounces around a bit. Developer Erik Wolpaw said the team dubbed it "Hoopy the Hoop" and expected it to become the big meme of Portal. Of course, none of the fans paid much attention to the hoop since "The Cake is a Lie" became the biggest meme of the game, and overall one of the biggest video game memes of all time.

2) Burgh, Pokemon Black and White (2010) When designing Burgh, developer Yusuke Ohmura said Gamefreak had many of their female employees give input on his design to create their ideal handsome man. However, as someone who's been in the Pokemon fandom for almost 3 decades, in the 15+ years since Pokemon Black and White released, I have personally never seen any fans swoon over Burgh, or even mention him in general. If anything, characters like N and Colress are far more well-known within the fandom as the most handsome and beloved male characters of Pokemon Gen 5.

Get yourself a beard that doubles as mouth guard.

I still struggle with the realism of this. Like yea sure pokemon was never gonna be realistic but my man. This guy will never kiss a woman let alone eat a meal without hair being the number 1 issue.

His beard works like Optimus prime’s visor.

He just has a big straw that goes over it and he slurps the food through it.

Why would he care about that? He's a fucking master of dragons bro.

And once a month he goes to the doctor to get assistance with his hairball problem.

Won't stop women from trying. Men too.

I love to headcanon that it's a long beard he grooms upward with hair gel for the aesthetic. When it's food time, he washes it back down, has his meal, then fixes it back up again.

Given how his beard is rendered in the Pokemon Adventures manga, that may not necessarily be just a headcanon. It's clearly modeled to resemble his Druddigon's jaw, and there's an obvious curvature to the beard under the jaw that makes it look like it's folded upward against his face..

He would just not use beard wax for that

I wonder if you know but together with the hairline of his granddaughter they actually form a dragon jaw.

Foreshadowing that Iris will have the exact same beard in B3W3. Bravo Gamefreak.

(I didn’t actually know that wow)
