miscellaneous [Interesting Trope] Attempts at fanservice/virality that failed not because they were hated, but because nobody noticed them or cared at all.

1) Hoopy the Hoop, Portal (2007) When you defeat GLaDOS and her room is destroyed at the end of the game, debris rains down in the final cutscene, including a big metal hoop that bounces around a bit. Developer Erik Wolpaw said the team dubbed it "Hoopy the Hoop" and expected it to become the big meme of Portal. Of course, none of the fans paid much attention to the hoop since "The Cake is a Lie" became the biggest meme of the game, and overall one of the biggest video game memes of all time.

2) Burgh, Pokemon Black and White (2010) When designing Burgh, developer Yusuke Ohmura said Gamefreak had many of their female employees give input on his design to create their ideal handsome man. However, as someone who's been in the Pokemon fandom for almost 3 decades, in the 15+ years since Pokemon Black and White released, I have personally never seen any fans swoon over Burgh, or even mention him in general. If anything, characters like N and Colress are far more well-known within the fandom as the most handsome and beloved male characters of Pokemon Gen 5.

Silver the Hedgehog was supposed to be the next big thing like Shadow was in SA2… too bad he made his debut in Sonic 06…

Silver's story was actually pretty good.

It's just that the writing was C tier and the gameplay was... what's worse than an F? But the underlying idea of Silver going back in time to stop Sonic, realizing he's been lied to, and helping him save the day is really good (apart from being suspiciously similar to the Cell Saga from DBZ).

The gameplay is straight Cleft tier. Right there with Richard Wattersons’ GPA in school.

Hey, you be nice to Future Trunks Silver the Hedgehog. At least he didn't have to go back and get hit on by his mom.

I still like the idea they had with the antagonist vs protagonists (Three protagonists who each have their own main antagonist, that being two halves of an ancient deity and one other villain who wants to use them for evil)

It also doesn't help that Sonic Adventure 2 has a Hero/Dark split so they have to make Shadow's story compelling enough to get you interested. Also he was originally slated to die at the end so he goes through an entire story arc with character development.

A mysterious creepy guy (the other half of the big bad) walks up to Silver, tells him Sonic is the bad guy, and then sends him through a portal to fight him. Silver doesn't even question this logic, has an extremely annoying boss fight, and then realizes "oh hey, maybe Sonic is a hero?" And keeps doing hero stuff.

His teammate Blaze is a beloved character even though she only talks to Silver. She debuted in Sonic Rush, a DS game released 6 months earlier that gave her a full story and a cool backstory.

At least his reputation has been slowly rising though it definitely feels more like a 50/50.

Comic writers managed to salvage the character, but he suffered a lot from poor writing in the games (even if in Forces he manages to put a decent performance against Infinite and is the reason why the heroes managed to turn the tide, albeit unintentionally)

I think he has my favorite design of any Sonic character and I like that he’s a psychic instead of speedy guy, but being the face of Sonic 06 has made it nearly impossible for me to actually like him much.

I know the fact that the game sucks has been meme’d to the nine circles and back, but Jesus that game is draining.

They seriously need to give Silver a second chance. He could be as big as Sonic and Shadow, but Sonic Team is too afraid to use him again in a mainline title.

Silver makes me so sad, because I genuinely really love him, but he's just saddled with so much unfortunate shit.

Can't believe this fucker dragged Blaze down with him >: T

He exists

Best way to put it. He looks cool but so do most Sonic characters. He's not mean or edgy like shadow nor is he aloof like Sonic. He just, is which makes him pale in comparison to the other two.

The crazy thing about Silver is that, despite everything you've said being correct, he is actually still very popular. Character polls often have him in the top 10, if not top 3 alongside Sonic and Shadow themselves.

Least his theme song peak

At least he's got a shot in Tails Gets Trolled.

Yeah, and a debut with a boss fight memed due to “IT’S NO USE” and often softlocking/stunlocking the player to death in some way…

I had so much fun in that game, cool next gen 3D and a sophisticated set of bugs that could have you visit the moon on a whim.

Beautiful.

Everyone hated Shadow when he first came out as well.

Ah well, I still love him
