miscellaneous [Interesting Trope] Attempts at fanservice/virality that failed not because they were hated, but because nobody noticed them or cared at all.

1) Hoopy the Hoop, Portal (2007) When you defeat GLaDOS and her room is destroyed at the end of the game, debris rains down in the final cutscene, including a big metal hoop that bounces around a bit. Developer Erik Wolpaw said the team dubbed it "Hoopy the Hoop" and expected it to become the big meme of Portal. Of course, none of the fans paid much attention to the hoop since "The Cake is a Lie" became the biggest meme of the game, and overall one of the biggest video game memes of all time.

2) Burgh, Pokemon Black and White (2010) When designing Burgh, developer Yusuke Ohmura said Gamefreak had many of their female employees give input on his design to create their ideal handsome man. However, as someone who's been in the Pokemon fandom for almost 3 decades, in the 15+ years since Pokemon Black and White released, I have personally never seen any fans swoon over Burgh, or even mention him in general. If anything, characters like N and Colress are far more well-known within the fandom as the most handsome and beloved male characters of Pokemon Gen 5.

Neinhalt Sieger from Samurai Shodown II was, according to the developers, designed as a "macho" character meant to appeal to female players. It presumably didn't work out, though, as his only other appearance was in the sixth game (an "everybody is here" dream match).

In what world is this the design 'for the ladies'?

They really just thought him being buff and shirtless would be enough

Apparently it worked for Gray in Fairy Tail. The author realized he had a bunch of male-targeted fanservice, so he figured it would be fair to have at least a little bit of female-targeted fanservice, and thus Gray's design was born. He's just kind of a moderately buff guy who doesn't wear a shirt. I've heard it worked.

Well yeah, but Gray was a lot younger, more handsome, and had a build which looked strong enough to be impressive without making him seem like a meathead.

Neinhalt on the other hand is some bald 30-something guy with no neck who looks like one of the unnamed badguys John Wick would have a two minute miniboss fight with. He's very much a design who's muscles really only serve to make him look like a strong fighter rather than appeal to women/people who find men attractive.

"let's make a design for the ladies. First, let's have him built like a professional masturbator."

At least Capcom got it right with Leon in requiem

They thought women would see the character and then choose to play as them because obviously theyd find him sexually attractive.

cus ya know, thats how those men picked what characters to play and they thought women would think the same for some reason.

P sure every woman (and a lot of men) probably felt more attracted to... Forgot his name, bit the guy with blue hair and incurable disease

That would be Ukyo. The funny thing is he's even a ladies' man in-universe... I mean, one of his win poses has a bunch of female groupies chasing him off-screen.

Yeah, SNK is very talented at making character who take the ladies' and lot lf mens' hearts by accident

(Iori, Ash and kyo come to mind)

Them trying to design one, tho, always fails

"macho" character

appeal to female players

Such mistakes are made often when men don't consult women about what they like.

Meanwhile, the OP cites a character made by consulting women that also flopped lol

Maybe people just really don't know what they like until they see it.

eh IDK it happens soemtimes. I'd say the whole "macho" thing tends to attract older women just in general though which would be a demographic problem.

He's one of the very few classic characters (Samsho 4 and below) that didn't get to return for the excellent reboot game. Because he's BORING.

In Samsho 2, he was a low tier with little story presence, very stilted animations, and a fighting style that made him a knowledge check in 1V1 and an absolute BITCH in arcade runs.

In short, he needed to be rebuilt. CORRECTLY. I can see him maybe working as a Grappler, but the Samsho community is not too hot on these, given the gameplay of the series and the fact the two main grapplers of the franchise were snooze fest Gaira and THE SECOND MOST DISGUSTING GRAPPLER EVER PUT IN A FIGHTING GAME. Both meta and story wise.

You're telling me this isn't a Sagat rip off? All the did was remove the eye patch/scars, and give him a mecha arm/legs.

u/BatmaAP 18d ago

Sagat Rip-Off. Just has a completely diferent design other than being bald.

1

u/MegadriveYM2612 18d ago

Capcom didn't invent bald guys.

I need the logic explained to me. Is his personality super good? All the guys in SS are kind of scrunky looking, but he's scrunkier than average.

My dude is giving "Frankenstein's monster but shaved bald"

What's funny is that he debuted alongside Genjuro who also sort of fits that standard. Probably because hes a psycho red haired guy
