Hated Tropes Stupid Contrived Survival Stories

  1. 12 Feet Deep - Two idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST go swimming in a pool after it's closed. An incredibly contrived sequence of events happens so they get stuck in a pool. So the movie can happen.

  2. Frozen (not that one) - Three idiots decide they absolutely positively MUST get on a ski-lift after it's closed. To the point of bribing the operator who for some stupid reason doesn't say anything. Do the movie can happen. Also, Wolves are not that aggressive. They are typically shy and avoid humans.

  3. 47 Meters Down- Arguably the most believable scenario on this list. It's still really stupid.

  4. Fall- Two idiots decide to climb an abandoned radio tower without proper equipment that would make escaping their predicament trivially easy. Stop me if you've heard this one before

so the movie can happen.

To be fair. Back then they had to broadcast a public service announcement to remind adults that they had kids and if they knew where they were.

I wonder if this is just a human problem, and people from the bronze age to the early industrial age were just forgetting they had children at 10pm and kids were just getting lost left and right.

Pretty much. You hear about the average lifespan being in the 40s back then but not because people only lived that long, if you made it to adulthood you were likely to live into your 60s or 70s, the average is lower because kids died, lots of kids died...

Hm… perhaps letting children operate heavy factory machinery is dangerous…

Ah, who cares? You there, child whose arm got ripped off by the lathe, you’re being sent to pull the lever that controls the giant molten metal crucible. I’m not paying pennies to stand around and cry!

To be fair, back then a majority of humans lived in tribes, villages and settlements with at most a couple of hundred people. The term, "it takes a village to raise a child" exists for a reason, as much like wolves a lot of humans at the time would help with raising and watching the children when the parents weren't available or were busy.

So usually, unless a kid left the village, they had a pair of eyes on them for a majority of the day. Child survival rates were still complete ass don't get me wrong, and kids definitely still wandered off, but in the past humans weren't nearly as secular when raising their kids as they are in the modern day where the parents and solely the parents are expected to raise the children without anyone's help or assistance

Man I hated those ads.

Parents would wake up from their gin and tonics and yell go to bed. So then I had to. Dammit man I wanted to watch Night Court!
