Hated Tropes (Hated trope) Remember all these stories and characters we followed for so long? Welp now it’s all reset.

1: using another flashpoint to create the tomorrowverse (Justice League Dark: Apokolips war) after 80-90% of the cast is killed off and billions lives are fated to die Flash and Constantine hatch up a plan to kill baby Darkseid to prevent the entire story from happening which just leads to an entirely different universe being formed and even erasing some characters from existence.

2: Jim travelling to the beginning (Tales of Arcadia series) after multiple characters die including Toby Jim uses a magic gem to travel back to the very first episode but instead lets Toby find the amulet… this changes things how?

Add Umbrella Academy as the third horseman here. The entire show was about a dysfunctional family struggling to find their place in the world and how they can grow together only for the finale to be like "Umm ackshually... you're the problem". So the entire family decided to kill themselves and reset everything and have it be that they never existed in the first place so that the universe doesn't implode on itself again.

I get bad endings usually have meaning behind them... BUT IF THAT'S SO, WHAT DID THEY MEAN BY THAT

u/Helpful-Young-6473 14d ago

4 seasons of the characters growth, healing, dealing with their shared trauma and abuse etc etc , just for the end message to be they never should have existed in the first place and they should just fucking die 😂

u/KingPenguinPhoenix 14d ago

And the world literally got better without them in it 😂😭

u/Infinite_T05 14d ago

Literally all the villains became good people living healthy lives without them apparently

u/karlothecool 14d ago

Did writers just hate the fans or they were on drugs

i bet it's complete delusions

I may be misremembering but didn't they show marigold flowers at the end so it was still possible for them to come to be? Meaning what they did was for nothing

u/KingPenguinPhoenix 14d ago edited 14d ago

The marigold flowers were just a reference to them since they were born from marigold the alien material.

In the new universe, all the alien marigold was wiped from existence so it would be impossible for the Umbrella siblings to be born again.

I can’t believe I wasted watching 4 seasons just for that ending

41

u/Dumeck 14d ago

Well let's be real 4 seasons of healing followed by extreme back tracking on said healing and character assassination.

144

u/deltamissfit 14d ago

The only message they could possibly have with that finale is

“If you don’t fit in you should just die”

It’s fucking ridiculous.

u/TrivialCoyote 13d ago

Additional what did they "mean by that" by having the only living remaining gay and trans characters of the show killing themselves too.

“The universe would actually objectively be a better place if you killed yourself”

Game of Thrones and House of Cards are always floated as the worst endings in tv history, but this needs to be alongside them

u/Forsaken_Ad203 14d ago

Not only that, but when you consider Clause who struggles with addiction, Victor who is openly trans, Allison and her struggles with race in america, Luther and his survival of long lasting emotional abuse from Allison... Plus the parental trauma and all of that baggage they show to have? Its basically saying to the audience "hey! Hey!!! Remember all of those people we made you relate to with their dealings? The world is better off with them not being and youre like them, fuckholes"

Game of Thrones had a shitty ending, Umberella Academy literally gives its audience the message that people who grew up in abusive homes and cant find a place in the world should kill themselves so that everybody else finds happiness. Its like if Bran decided to abolish the feudal system at the end of GoT.

18

u/nufohudis 14d ago

I mean, Bran DID get voted in, start of democracy? XD

8

u/neonlookscool 14d ago

The leaders of the major houses decided which one would be king due to no eligible heirs which is pretty stereotypical for feudalism

2

u/nufohudis 14d ago

Ya gotta start somewhere, Bran's not gonna have a standard heir either

6

u/MechaGodzilla101 13d ago

GoT's ending is that Daenerys is destined to go mad cause her father and sibling were. I feel like that isn't a great message either.

And to further this, didn’t fucking exist in the comics cause the creator (lead singer for my chemical romance) didn’t bother finishing the damn series

53

u/The_Redacted_Badger 14d ago

Has he said anything about continuing after the third volume? It ended on a pretty big cliffhanger

74

u/cant_give_an_f 14d ago

He said that he was working on it during season 3 and mentioned he should be finished by just after season 4 premiere but Gerard always had issues releasing his stuff and just gave up

Channeling his inner George R. R. Martin.

I mean, he's not ok or so he promised.

u/TrivialCoyote 13d ago

Im SO curious what he thinks about the show's ending, considering the writers just go "all the people you practically write songs for dont belong on this planet"

The cleanse is a concept from future volumes of the comics and is exactly in line with the themes of his works.

It questions what it means to be a superhero if no one remembers your sacrifice (but the viewers, it’s meta) it’s not “the world would be better without you lol” and it’s crazy people boil it down to that.

The academy were dead before S1 and get to finally chill in an afterlife after saving the world. It’s a bittersweet but fine ending.

2

u/Present_Anywhere3980 13d ago

It is literally ongoing right now.

2

u/Present_Anywhere3980 13d ago

There was a Klaus spinoff and one shot Hazel/Cha Cha issue released and Volume #4 is ongoing right now.

The cleanse is a concept from future volumes of the comics, dw.

All his other works end up in death too pretty much. Heck the current MCR tour had the band members (& others) killed nightly.

Damn glad I stopped when I did.

u/EmperorSexy 14d ago

I only watched Season 1 and quit because that also ends with “Nothing we did the past ~10 episodes actually mattered. Oh well.”

u/Masticatron 14d ago

I still contend this particular bit made sense within the story and was reasonably executed. It wasn't their personal failings that fucked the world, it was the magical particles mixed up with them that made the wholesale destruction of the universe inevitable; they could not succeed and exist simultaneously as a matter of physics.

And heroic sacrifice, even when it gives up their own desires, is commonly accepted: a man holds a door, a robot who became practically human destroys themselves so their tech can't be learned and used to produce an AI apocalypse, a father snaps his fingers to kill a purple despot, a father stays behind to blow up a space rock, a giant robot yeets himself into a missile...

What we should focus on and really hate this season for was all the character assassinations it did along the way.

19

u/KingPenguinPhoenix 14d ago

But we do get to see them live normal lives, the very beginning of season 4 played out what a scenario like that could look like. If it was really the magic particles, the Umbrella family could've made another reality where both Marigold and Durango didn't exist at all (ala season 3 but with more certainty).

Instead, the series finale made it look like it was the siblings themselves that had the problem and had to go (not even the guy who gave them their powers and trauma. Reginald still wins in the end btw). That's the worst part about all this.

Now, could we chalk this hitch up to bad writing and inconsistencies? Sure but the intentions don't make the finale (or the themes people attached to it) look any better.

1

u/Present_Anywhere3980 13d ago

Most of them had voted against saving the world and seeing the afterlife a season earlier. This way they got to do both.

(Reginald does not still win in the end btw he’s dead)

21

u/KillerArse 14d ago

The writers decided they needed to die to make the world a better place.

That was a decision made by the writers.

Explaining the mechanisms of how they decided to implement that don't change the result we got.

10

u/SavagePassion 14d ago

I don't even watch this show and that was my first thought.

3

u/ReportFeeling7907 13d ago

I believe this season was so bad because this was the first season which didn’t have any source material to go off of. The umbrella academy comic hasn’t been finished yet, meaning this whole season was written in house. I guess it’s telling how competent the writers of the show actually were if this is the best they could manage. The fact that this season was two episodes shorter than the rest yet still meanders for most of the runtime cements that for me.

2

u/Sengfroid 13d ago

Game of Thrones really showed that sometimes people that are great at keeping a locomotive in motion are terribly equipped to handle running out of track.

2

u/Present_Anywhere3980 13d ago

Only season one was based on the comics. Season 2/3 were entirely original bar the fish guy and a couple of the sparrows powers.

Season 4 takes multiple comic plots, klaus plot, the Jennifer incident and the cleanse were all from the comics. If anything it was the second closest season to the comics.

Ending was fine, Netflix slashing 4 hours off the runtime was the issue.

2

u/SluttyMcFucksAlot 14d ago

What a great first two seasons followed by just some of the worst decisions ever. I didn’t even go back after season 3.

u/RainhoLimomo 14d ago

To me it's so fucking funny the showrunner did it because he hated the whole cast and wouldn't to wait for Gerard Way to come up with an actual ending
