Hated Tropes (Hated trope) Remember all these stories and characters we followed for so long? Welp now it’s all reset.

1: using another flashpoint to create the tomorrowverse (Justice League Dark: Apokolips war) after 80-90% of the cast is killed off and billions lives are fated to die Flash and Constantine hatch up a plan to kill baby Darkseid to prevent the entire story from happening which just leads to an entirely different universe being formed and even erasing some characters from existence.

2: Jim travelling to the beginning (Tales of Arcadia series) after multiple characters die including Toby Jim uses a magic gem to travel back to the very first episode but instead lets Toby find the amulet… this changes things how?

Mortal Kombat (multiple times)

  • first reset in MK9 with Raiden sending a message to himself to prevent Armageddon bringing us back to the first Mortal Kombat game events
  • Second was at the end of MK11 / beginning of MK1(MK12) when Liu Kang defeats Kronika and Shang Tsung and gains the power to control the hourglass he resets the entire universe to create his “New Era”

I don't understand why, if he had ultimate power, he STILL chose to implement a version of the Mortal Kombat tournament in his new reality. Like... you know that only causes pain and suffering, right? You've experienced this first-hand. But you still were like "Hey, this is a barrel of laughs for everyone involve, would be a shame to give it up?". Meta-wise, sure, bring in older characters, give them a new spin, why not? But in-universe, there is no excuse for Liu Kang to screw everyone over.

Also, the Titan Armageddon at the end was pathetic, not to mention the DLC. Titans shouldn't just be brought down with a couple of kicks and punches.

That is an amazing point… the only reason I could see why he would implement it would be to manage the realms trying to take over one another. The issue with that though is why let realms take one another over?

IIRC in the new era timeline, it's said that the tournament is a friendly contest that he, in his role as the Earth Realm god, came up together with Jerrod in order to, I dunno, foster good relationships between the two realms? So it wasn't about the old "Win 10 tournaments in a row, take over the other realm", if I remember things right.

Except inevitably, radical elements like Shao Kahn, now General Kahn, take it a bit too seriously. Big surprise.

Also, same with the atheist question of "Why is there suffering if there's a benevolent god?", Liu Kang CHOSE to make Tarkatan a horrible disease instead of them being a seperate race, he still CHOSE to give his mortal enemies a chance at redemption... and all of that lead to so much pain and suffering. This was all according to Liu Kangs design still, fyi.

IIRC he gave up the power because it is essentially erasing free will. It's more like he ran the same algorithm but changed the input values.

So from my understanding, you can't change fate

Shao will always be evil and powerhungry, even if he raised Shao from birth, he'd still eventually turn evil

The King of Edenia, now Outworld, will always die

Onaga will always exist, be it as an intelligent king who lords over the gods, or a mindless animal to be tamed, he still exists

I believe even without Titan Shang Tsung's influence, a lot of these things would still happen, just differently. Remember that Kronika went insane trying to make her perfect timeline, it only makes sense that Liu Kang couldn't either

He had ultimate power before he gave it up though. He very much could've kept all the realms seperate by design, I would assume. I guess he just really liked the opportunity to play Raidens role and hey, if some people get their eyes gouged out, that's just how it goes.

isn’t this basically explained at the start and in the middle of MK1?

Liu Kang wanted mortals to choose their own path and have their own free will, he didn’t want to become like Kronika.

Is that how that worked? Because knowing nothing of the game's full plot, I just assumed based on the little I did see that Liu Kang just became inexplicably evil or something similar. Mainly because, as pointed out, it doesn't make sense to remake some of the darker elements of the old world.

At least in 1 it showed that all the endings in 11 were canon

True, however all of the individuals story lines end up resetting the timeline except for 2 or 3.
I do hope we have some iterations of characters to return. I need a Kabal storyline again…

I remember seeing a fun idea where New Era Stryker is a grizzled ex-cop turned private eye.

D'Vorah better be an actual bug and not just a lady-insect hybrid

They should have preserved the 11 timeline but just revive the dead characters. Having older characters like most other fighting game series was great.

The second timeline reset left me so dissapointed. I thought we would get to see the era of the great Kung Lao

Besides...many character arcs and stuff got completely screwed, like Hanzo Hazashi and Kuai Liang

MK11 story shenanigans were so ass that I'm not even mad about Liu Kang's reset. Plus he managed to turn residential MK jobbers and old characters into relevant and enjoyable characters with more screentime.

The only good thing about MK11's story was everything to do with Scorpion and Sub Zero finally having their bs actually progress in the main story rather than being background details or tower endings...and of course they just had to throw a poison pill into it by letting D'Vorah kill Past!Scorpion.
