Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Autism is the best thing ever

  1. Because of her autism, music's worldview is really innocent and positive with bright colours and these stupid dances whilst in real life she gets chocked out by her "caretaker" (Music)

  2. Most videos Dhar Mann has on autism have them being these really smart people that solve a test or a spelling bee or win a competition

Memes like this.

I genuinely despise these memes so much.

I am autistic.

I would absolutely destroy all of that.

2

u/Thewaltham 5d ago

Man more for me then I guess, those mini pizza things are something else.

2

u/CumCereal08 5d ago

Duality of man

1

u/Thin-Limit7697 5d ago

I am autistic.

I would absolutely get sick eating just that.

7

u/Ok-Classroom5548 5d ago

I am autistic and most of that is gross to me. I would love a salad with a bunch of stuff mixed together. I didn’t get diagnosed until I was nearly 40 and I am a woman. We tend to get misdiagnosed because of these stereotypes. But, it also can be an indicator that neurodivergency is present. Also could be ptsd or trauma based.

I do know what I like and was trained to suffer through things I didn’t because little girls are supposed to be polite and well behaved, right? /s

u/Ok-Bicycle8103 5d ago

To be fair, dino nuggies are delicious, no matter your neurotype.

31

u/Antique_Loss_1168 5d ago

Arfid literally won't let me eat them. I am irony autist.

13

u/Turbogoblin999 5d ago

Iron deficient autism.

2

u/yeetingthisaccount01 5d ago

my brother just another me

2

u/TheChunkMaster 5d ago

Tantalus and his Dino-shaped fruit

6

u/IveHair 5d ago

Time to out myself as a horrible man…

I don’t like them. I’d go as far as saying I really particularly do not like them.

2

u/MovieNightPopcorn 5d ago

They are too spongy for me

2

u/Correct_Campaign5704 5d ago

They're like the cheapest and least appetizing nuggets ever conceived, I don't know how they're so beloved aside from being a silly shape

6

u/Key-Arrival-3745 5d ago

It's because they're a silly shape.

1

u/melkatron 5d ago

Tyson makes a good dino nuggie that takes 8 minutes in an air fryer. It's a go-to when I don't feel like cooking something... Wal Mart has a clone of the Raising Cane's dipping sauce that I mix with some Hellfire (Fiery Fool) sauce.

Around this time of year, Tyson gives them spooooky shapes like bats and ghosts.

2

u/CatoTheSmellder 5d ago

It's just flavourless mush. I've never understood why nuggets are so popular with autists, they don't really taste like anything.

2

u/Thewaltham 5d ago

I mean that's the point. It doesn't taste like anything bad and the texture is consistent. Nothing unexpected sneaks up on you. It's safe. Not going to get your senses slapped by something unexpected and unpleasant or grossed out by a weird nasty changeable texture in the middle of something.

The dino nuggies are kinda crap though. You can get way better ones. Proper juicy tender ones straight out the air fryer with some barbeque sauce on the side are something else.

1

u/melkatron 5d ago

the "Yummy Dino Buddies" are subpar, but Tyson makes dino nuggets now and they're great.

1

u/Orleanian 5d ago

I would neurotypically eat the bajeesus out of this meal and love every moment of it.

63

u/zo0ombot 5d ago

This isn't portraying autism as the best thing ever? It's just joking about ARFID lightheartedly, which many people with autism have and relate to.

8

u/kulupu_kasi_seli 5d ago

Ironically, my disordered eating that partially stems from autism prevents me from eating most of that.

4

u/zo0ombot 5d ago

I can't eat any of it either, despite also being autistic, because I'm diabetic and keep careful track of my carbs, but I respect it is autism culture lol.

36

u/Sea_Chipmunk3999 5d ago

I don't mind them, let us have a little fun with it. This may not apply to every autistic person and that's okay. But if we can't find joy in humor in our lived experience, what's the point?

16

u/MevNav 5d ago

Every day I'm glad I didn't get the "can only eat five types of food" flavor of autism. But that always surprises people because it's kind of assumed being a picky eater is, like, part of the package.

3

u/gorroval 5d ago

Same! I love food, I love having a variety of food. It would be tragic to be so restricted.

18

u/ShrimplyKrilliant 5d ago

...Is it bad that, as an autistic person, I would consider this an almost perfect meal? (Besides it not being nutritional)

4

u/P-I-S-S-N-U-T 5d ago

No. I’m autistic too and it seems like I’m the weird for thinking that shit looks nasty

15

u/Affectionate_Air3668 5d ago

Forgo the spaghetti hoops and get a thinner pizza and maybe it'll be ok

35

u/ohthedarside 5d ago

I dont mind this meme

Every autistic person i know including myself agrees the meme is basically correct

9

u/GreekGodofStats 5d ago

I am autistic and don’t like most of these foods

6

u/H0rny_On-Main 5d ago

And I'm British and tea/coffee makes me gag. Doesn't change the fact it's o popular our power plants need to ramp up supply to account for kettle usage at the time the most popular soap operas end

1

u/four100eighty9 5d ago

I eat almost everything. Salads are great.

1

u/KingAltair2255 5d ago

Yeah smiley faces, waffles and potato letters are all the completely wrong way to prepare a potato for me, they're all vile, absolutely love potato wedges but the potato smileys make me want to heave, no idea why.

1

u/Digit00l 5d ago

Tomatoes are evil and should not be allowed to be in food

1

u/four100eighty9 5d ago

How dare you, suh? How...dare...you?

2

u/Digit00l 5d ago

It's the autism

1

u/elheber 5d ago

Autism runs heavy in my family, an one of my nephews eats the healthiest out of the entire family. I'm talking balanced macros, organic and fresh, locally sourced if possible, proper hydration, wheatgrass shots, the whole nine yards. This plate would disgust him. He's super into hi-fi sound systems, e-bikes and online memes. And he's such a train & bus transit nut that he plans our entire itineraries when we vacation elsewhere. He's baller at it.

Others in my family slowly grew out of the nugget phase, but this nephew never had that inclination at all.

1

u/MovieNightPopcorn 5d ago

In America maybe? Not for me personally, but my mom didn’t serve this kind of food growing up. Except tater tots, which I do like.

I knew an autistic girl at university who was a Greek immigrant, and she would have to go home weekly to get proper homemade Greek food from her mother. She would gag if she tried to eat anything served at the university other than like yogurt. Picky eating really depends on what you are used to.

1

u/Creepy_Zone_9341 5d ago

Im autistic and I don’t agree, I actually value my health and not getting colon cancer

-1

u/BicoastalBi 5d ago

I don’t. While I had my phases of being more picky, I also had parents with genuine investment in ensuring I both ate properly and had an appreciation for good food, and I lived in areas with good markets as well.

I’ve always seen the dino nuggets memefood stuff in general as more specific than people think, because imo it primarily represents a culture from parts of America where a. food is more viewed as utility and b. fresher food is less accessible. Like… how is this universal to autistic people living in plenty of other parts of the world, like Asia and Africa?

3

u/-Nate493- 5d ago

Because it was probably made by an American raised in American culture and then posted on an American social media app. Do you think you or I relate to everything posted on the social media apps from around the world?

2

u/zo0ombot 5d ago

My wealthy parents had genuine investment in making sure I ate properly and had an appreciation for good food, I lived in areas with great markets, my own mother is a dietician and public health specialist, I am not white and spent much of my childhood outside of the US... I still developed ARFID because of the specific presentation of my autism and sensory issues including long spans of time where I only ate noodles or nuggets. Idk why you think those things can prevent a presentation of a neurodevelopmental condition.

8

u/kulupu_kasi_seli 5d ago

Why are the foods touching so much…

7

u/MeepMan324 5d ago

I do like turkey dinosaurs tho

3

u/Open-Solution-8791 5d ago edited 5d ago

that is pure heat

2

u/Parking-Stable-2970 5d ago

That looks really good

Except the waffles, I could do without

2

u/jazzberry76 5d ago

tbf I am autistic and this would go ridiculously hard

1

u/Pinkleek01 5d ago

I'm autistic and I would only eat the spaghettios on here but this meme is kinda funny

1

u/AdelineKraxx 5d ago

Okay but that does look fucking amazing! I would demolish that!

1

u/Forward_Potential820 5d ago

Tbh a bunch of agree with thar

1

u/Rabdomtroll69 5d ago

I'd take the smileys out of nostalgia more than anything else tbh

1

u/RefrigeratorNo1160 5d ago

Lol I'm autistic and think this is hilarious and I'd eat it greedily (except the spaghetti-o's 🤮). I can see how others would be offended though

1

u/Mysterious-Simple805 5d ago

Are those Gigglers? Do they even make those anymore?

1

u/davedbsh 5d ago

I feel degraded

1

u/pchlster 5d ago

I mean, I would definitely eat it if it was served to me, but it looks more like "emptying out the freezer/pantry" food than anything else.

1

u/cognitive_dissent 5d ago

I'd eat pizza eveyday

1

u/Familiar_Delivery790 5d ago

sensory overload 🤮

1

u/megosonic 5d ago

I won't lie as an autistic person I would like to snack on that, at the same time I feel like anyone with a decent appetite would love that.

0

u/March_Lion 5d ago

Agreed. It's infantilizing.

It also becomes a self-enforcing prophecy! There's so many delicious, easy safe foods in every culture on this planet. Bean and cheese quesadillas, esquites, taquitos. Onigiri, tamago nigiri, miso soup, omurice. Pao de queijo, biscoito de polvilho. The list is near endless and yet the meme is infantilizing and so incredibly American centric that it becomes this aggravating game of explaining that you are perfectly capable of eating out at places that don't have a grilled cheese on the menu.

-1

u/Plane-Cod-5714 5d ago

If I was offered that just because I'm autistic I would probably be somewhat offended as well, like, I'm autistic, not a 10 year old... I will still eat it since it's there, sure, but that does not have anything to do with my autism.

-2

u/DraperPenPals 5d ago

The people who are replying to you are giving me an even bigger headache.

4

u/zo0ombot 5d ago

Why does it give you a headache to know that autistic people relate to a meme lol

-2

u/DraperPenPals 5d ago

Because nobody is actually special for liking these foods and it’s fucking boring and trite content?

4

u/RTGamer21 5d ago

No one is claiming to be special lol

You're GENUINELY just whining for the sake of it

-1

u/DraperPenPals 5d ago

Sorry for agreeing with somebody who complained about a meme. I will try not to engage in conversation on a message board next time

5

u/zo0ombot 5d ago

But the reason people are commenting is that it doesn't fit the trope? The trope is hating things that show autism is the best thing ever, while the meme is just a joke about a commonality many autistic people share and was almost certainly made by an autistic person. The meme itself isn't actually about liking these foods but about arfid and sensory sensitivities that many autistic people share that make them prefer bland foods.

-2

u/DraperPenPals 5d ago

The person who posted the meme said it sucks. I agreed with him.

Why the fuck are you arguing with me about this?

1

u/Dear-Pomegranate4470 5d ago

That's not the point of the meme lmao

0

u/DraperPenPals 5d ago

I don’t care. It’s still boring and trite

1

u/Dear-Pomegranate4470 5d ago

ARFID is neither of those things but hey you go off baby

-1

u/Dry-Yesterday-9176 5d ago

These are snacks. You eat them during party or when friends are over and you don't want to eat serious food
