Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Autism is the best thing ever

  1. Because of her autism, music's worldview is really innocent and positive with bright colours and these stupid dances whilst in real life she gets chocked out by her "caretaker" (Music)

  2. Most videos Dhar Mann has on autism have them being these really smart people that solve a test or a spelling bee or win a competition

How the hell did they take a mental disability, write it as the "next stage of human evolution", look at it, and think "yeah, that's a great idea, everyone's gonna love this"

For me the issue is that the Aliens, the Predators, the Yautja, the biggest and baddest hunters out there, the main mans and womens, decide "You know what would be amazing for our genetics?, autism"

They should have just gotten vaccines.

Just take some Tylenol for your headaches. You'll be building model aircrafts in no time.

They REALLY love hunting things. Maybe they just need to get diagnosed already.

Next movie: Predators steal all the Tylenol.

I genuinely cant fathom how this movie was made. What an unhinged plot synopsis, especially for a movie trying to be serious.

It's defined as a neurodevelopmental disability, which is a mental disability by definition

As someone with autism, I can confidently it is a disability. Autism causes struggles in life, you saying it isnt a disability erases those struggles.

Autism is more than that. It also comes with executive functioning problems, and friction in social situations can make getting by more difficult. And that's just for someone with mild symptoms like me. People further on the other side of the spectrum have a lot of other difficulties. It can definitely be disabling!

Again, it's literally defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder. This isn't an opinion, it's a fact. If you disagree with it, take it up with the entierty of modern psychology.

Disabilities are usually regarded as such in relation to the society within they happen. A person without legs has a disability as long as the world around him isn't fit to his specific needs, once they all get filled it's just a person without legs, it has as much potential as any person.

Autistic people unfortunately still have a lot of issues in our society, they don't fit in as neuronormative people do and are often excluded from society as a result. They don't have the same ability as neuronormative people to fit and work into society, so they have a disability.

Having it doesn't suddenly make you an expert on it. We both have brains, but we aren't neurologists.

If it’s not a disability, don’t ask for or expect accommodations.

Can‘t have it both ways.

It's a bit more complex than that, but plenty of autistic traits are disabling.

It is absolutely a disability. It causes serious deficits in communication and interaction. Don’t talk about things you’re ignorant about.

u/Lionoras 5d ago

To be specific: It's a disorder that can be disabling

I.e., yes. Depending on the Autistic person, it can 100% be considered a disability.

That said. I'm also with the other guy: "Mental disability" makes it sound like someone is mentally slow. Like. Similar to how you wouldn't call sb with dyslexia "mentally disabled"

I think when you hear mental disability you think of intellectual disability (which many autistic people also have). However, while mental disability is not the typical term used to describe autism (autism is medically classified as a developmental disability) it is not inaccurate descriptor.

u/Lionoras 5d ago

Issue is just that though: While many Autistic people might also be delayed - a lot aren't. Autism is a spectrum.

"Mental disability" evokes the Autistic stereotype of Rainman. Per se: it encourages the idea that people who are Autistic /have anything related to the brain are stupid.

Think it like this: Imagine if I said "Oh yeah. This is MrPolarbear. He's a big ape." Technically speaking, I'd be correct: humans are in the family of apes. However, you'd still feel mildly insulted, right? Because we usually connect "ape" with "stupid/primal".

It's the same with e.g., "Mental Disorder". Technically, also a possible term. But obviously, we don't use it. Why? Because the term makes you think of someone with mental issues - depression, schizophrenia, BPD etc.

I guess we just hear different connotations from the term “mental”. Also, when interacting with users online, you should really use neutral pronouns, unless you know what pronouns they use.

I also have it. And recognizing that autistic people struggle with things allistic people do not is not categorizing us as lesser, it’s what makes it so we can get help. It’s awesome if you don’t view your autism as a disability, but don’t make statements that are objectively wrong. Some of us actually need accommodations to survive, and saying “it’s not a disability” just makes it harder for the vast majority of autistic individuals who are disabled by it.

-11

u/DragonLordAcar 5d ago

My statement was intended to push back against the idea that autism HAS to be a disability. It is an entire spectrum after all.

4

u/MrPolarbear9 5d ago

Well you didn’t say that. You said it is not a mental disability, then you said it’s only a disability to people who don’t understand it. Neither of those statements are true for the vast majority of autistic people.

u/CaptainMills 5d ago

People with neurodivergent traits have no communication problems with eachother.

This is nonsense. We absolutely can and do have problems communicating with each other. It is absurd to claim otherwise

2

u/DraperPenPals 5d ago

It’s a disability.
