Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) Autism is the best thing ever

  1. Because of her autism, music's worldview is really innocent and positive with bright colours and these stupid dances whilst in real life she gets chocked out by her "caretaker" (Music)

  2. Most videos Dhar Mann has on autism have them being these really smart people that solve a test or a spelling bee or win a competition

Also the kid doesn’t really come off as autistic.

Like, Theres one scene where Theres a fire drill/alarm at his school while Hes in chess club/class. He gets overwhelmed by the noise and curls up from overstimulation (which is fair enough, I suffer from audio/light sensitivity) the “bully’s” come in, taunt him for a bit, and then just randomly go around the room and shove the chess boards to the floor.

Autism kid then stands up, and like a robot replaces every single chess board to wgere it was, with all the pieces exactly as they were.

Like that’s not autism that’s some sort of freak photographic memory.

That’s sort of savant level autism… or what Hollywood likes to put out there as savant level.

I mean, I have done that myself. Try to replace everything the way it was previously. I do that every time I take my collection of warhammer minis to a game store. When I get back home I place them exactly in the same spot.

Hell back in highschool I was weird enough to want to organize silver ware to be in a pattern whenever it was my turn to do dishes. So I get the kid wanting to “fix” the chess boards.

Organizing your personal collection of minis and somehow being able to know exactly how everything was is a bit different.

My main complaint is less him wanting to fix them and more that he somehow knew the exact layouts of like 12+ active chess games in progress.

What does "really come off as autistic" entail, exactly?

Asking for a friend.

You will get five different answers and they will all insist they are the experts

u/UncannyValleyEnjoyer 5d ago

And somehow, all the five will be correct and wrong

20

u/Demoniac_smile 5d ago

And you only asked three people.

I mean, I did ask on a public forum...

As in I don’t remember him displaying any signs of autism.

I am autistic myself. And while there is a certain amount of masking that one can do, people can still pretty quickly clock someone who is even mildly autistic.

People can pearl clutch all they want, but autism being a neuro-developmental disorder means that generally there are tells when interacting with autistic people.

12

u/DoveOnTheInternet 5d ago

Oh sib, I'm sorry, I'm not trying to pearl clutch - I'm a late diagnosed AuDHD trying to figure out why I don't seem to get clocked like that.

I do not mask well enough to be this stealth so I'm trying to figure this out, and the only answer I've been able to come up with thus far is "tits".

u/StigandrTheBoi 5d ago

Yeah autism is heavily under diagnosed in women/Afab people. Theres some gender perception thing about it that causes that but I don’t feel like I would be able to give you a better answer than that.

Remember that is just one persons opinion, and we all get one but they arent facts.

I am also female, I was originally diagnosed when I was 9, but my misguided yet wellmeaning parents thought I didn't need any help and I was just their "quirky little daughter." So I went through school and the majority of my twenties feeling like an idiot becuase I couldn't grasp certain concepts and easily overwhelmed and panicked over little things.

I was re-evaluated and rediagnosed in my late 20s as having ADHD and mild autisim, I was shocked to learn that ADHD and autisum is severely understudied in girls and women bcause we are "mask" better than boys and men because of our genetic make-up and brain chemestry.

So yes, the main difference bwteen austic men and women does indeed boil down to "tits". -_-

And this is how most women go un dxed.

Maybe they can tell of someone is different but these days the public seems to diagnose anyone thats eccentric as autistic

20

u/StigandrTheBoi 5d ago

I mostly blame the tiktokification of mental health and neurodivergence that happened, especially during the pandemic.

Things like “hyper fixation” and “special interest” and such have been watered down to mean “something I’m into right now”.

It’s incredibly irritating to see.

u/Express_Pop810 5d ago

So many psych terms have been misused and abused lately.

6

u/Sad_Tank_411 5d ago

there was a young guy at my old job who said "i think i might have autism and my special interest is shopping for clothes" to justify his shopping addiction lol.

Sadly I think it started long before that, have way too many times I've ran into people who were chronically online that decided they're self diagnosed because it explains why they're awful at the real world. Meanwhile my significant other was diagnosed at a young age and constantly wants me to get tested, being a bit put off that I'm indifferent to it as I still have to be me regardless of any professional opinion

u/UnknovvnMike 5d ago

Right? I'm not autistic, only ADD and odd, just let me be eccentric. Doesn't stop my wife and MiL from sharing a knowing look when I express an attachment to foods, items, or how I've got things organized.

We run around (on tip-toes) flapping our hands, repeating words we heard, spinning in circles while only eating very specific safe foods (let’s go for chicken nuggets as an example), we only drink out of one cup…. Oh and we drop to the ground when there’s a sudden loud noise.

Did I miss any cliches?!

Edit; I meant this in a humorous way. I am an autistic adult.

u/Yandere_Matrix 5d ago

Has there been any shows or movies that depict innattentive adhd instead of the hyperactive type? Because innattentive feels like hell (in my opinion) because I struggle so much with it.

6

u/AdelineKraxx 5d ago

I don’t know tbh…. It’s the type I have too… was t diagnosed till my 30s so I went through all my education without any help for AuDHD and… Euch.

4

u/DoveOnTheInternet 5d ago

Yeah, that last one reads more "narcoleptic with cataplexy" than "autistic".

The rest seems to hit all the big ones, though you did forget my personal favorite: T-rex arms!

4

u/AdelineKraxx 5d ago

Drop to the ground covering our ears. Sorry I missed a part!

Edit: OMG how could I miss T rex arms?!?!

u/Elegant_Situation285 5d ago

oh, i thought autism was "a spectrum".

you know what i hate? people who self-diagnose as autistic and go around using it as an excuse.

3

u/StigandrTheBoi 5d ago

You do not need to have flappy hands and make weird noises for people to clock you as autistic.

And yes there is an epidemic of people self diagnosing, though I’m wondering what you mean. An excuse for what?

I did an evening course and talking to a woman with a kid just entering uni, women mask and display autism differently by all accounts, so the diagnosis rates are lower than in boys, her daughter goes "mum, I think you have it too" so she gets a very late stage diagnosis and I say that Gary Numan found out via his wife who had a brother with it and said his stage persona was more him coping than being a stage persona.

But they all got a real medical diagnosis after being told "I think you should get tested" I guess I set off some of her alarms as she said I should look into it myself, but I've not and nor am I doing the self diagnosis, as it is a spectrum with high and low functioning, I'd be on the high end I guess as I've never really thought there was anything remotely like that with me.

But people who self diagnose or just use it as an excuse for shitty behaviour, those can do one, one guy was being a knob on an old forum from years ago, once someone said he sounded autistic, that was it, he couldn't help saying what he said because of it.

Dude, you are online, you can just not type up that vile shit you just posted, or type it out and just not hit send.
