Hated Tropes (Hated Meta Trope) Plot Holes that are not Plot Holes. There is an explanation if you bother to watch the movie

"Plot Hole": Why didn't Thanos just make the universe bigger to end overpopulation!

Explanation: Thanos wants to kill half the population to end overpopulation right? If he created more resources, the universe would just become overpopulated all over again. He explains this in his villain monolog. There are parts of his plan that make no sense (he's called the Mad Titan for a reason), but this one is actually explained. His plan was also to punish people for their greed, and making more food would not be much of a punishment. He also has a savior complex which makes him double down on his plan to prove he's right

"Plot Hole": Why wasn't the Death Star's exhaust port fortified!

Explanation: It fucking WAS. They had laser cannons surrounding the port because the Empire knew it was a weak point. The imperial general saw the rebels and chose to do nothing about it. He says "I think you overestimate their chances". Luke needed help from Han Solo, the disembodied voice of Ben and the Force in order to get the torpedoes into that tiny hole. Han even says that the shot was "one in a million".

This reads like George’s revisionist nonsense.

Probably, but just adding that he himself has said it too for why they appear as a "joke" nowadays.

I’m more apt to take what he actually put in the script at the time as the original intent

Obi-Wan: “And these blast points, too accurate for Sandpeople. Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise.”

Could just mean sand people have even worse than bad aim

Then it’s a really weird way to word it. It emphasizes that only Imperial Stormtroopers are capable of being that precise, it would make no sense if they sucked.

He was old enough to remember the stormtroopers being clones and not the worse aimed militia?

Except when the first film was written clone troopers weren’t a thing yet.

This is a big stretch to justify what is obviously George going back and retroactive altering what was originally written.

Clone troopers as a concept probably existed when it was written since the line about the Clone Wars was first mentioned in Star Wars ANH, but probably only vaguely resembles the final versions when he did the prequels.

The Clone Wars existed as a concept, but only that. It was basically a throwaway line to make the universe seem bigger. There was some mention of clones in early drafts of Empire, with Lando going to a clone from a whole planet of clones, but that was scrapped after the first draft. The idea that we saw born out in AotC was a much later development.

I mean, that's more or less what I said, it probably only vaguely resembled the final version in the PT, but a war called the Clone Wars probably included clones who were soldiers or troopers in some capacity wouldn't you agree on that?

Oh i thought we were ripping on the retcons

"Stormtroopers intentionally missed the heroes" is pretty much the gold standard of revisionist nonsense

It was just a cheesy action movie, end of story

In the first movie, it was literally stated that Tarkin let them go because Vader planned for a tracking beacon to be planted on the Falcon to lead them to the Rebel Alliance

And what's your explanation for every other time the stormtroopers are piss poor shots during the OT?

They defeated the rebels and captured Leia very efficiently in the opening. Look at how many died compared to the rebels.

ESB,

Hoth was a defeat for the rebels, stormtroopers mostly outgunned them there.

On Cloud City they were supposed to corral Luke to the carbonite chamber so Vader could capture him. Which is why Vader wanted to test the freezing if it worked on Han. The Falcoln hyperactive was sabotaged by the empire so it was believed they would be captured again until R2D2 fixed it.

RotJ, George Lucas was done with the franchise and was going through his divorce during the making of it and decided to wrap it up and wanted the empire to lose. The Empire was technically routing the ewoks until Chewbacca got ahold of an AT-ST and this wasn't the full military might, remember it was a back entrance less guarded then the front entrance. Also Ewoks are scary AF, they probably ate the dead troopers and they also caught Luke, Han, and Leia. If they could catch those three, what chance did the Empire have?

RotJ, George Lucas was done with the franchise and was going through his divorce during the making of it and decided to wrap it up and wanted the empire to lose.

Come on, how did you manage to type that out without realizing how silly it makes your entire argument sound?

2

u/Fearsthelittledeath 3d ago

It's only really RotJ that turned the Stormtroopers into a "joke", but ignore all the ANH and ESB examples I guess.

2

u/Endiamon 3d ago

Most people would look at cannon fodder that's a joke in 2 outta 3 movies and immediately see that it would be kinda silly to bend over backwards to explain how they're secretly super cool and skilled, but I guess you're just built different.

3

u/Fearsthelittledeath 3d ago

How were they cannon fodder in 2 out of 3? What part of ESB made them look like cannon fodder?

0

u/Endiamon 3d ago

They're a joke in ANH and RotJ.

"They were intentionally being incompetent" is an excuse that immediately loses all credibility once there is a single other example of them being that incompetent without it being some sort of trick.

Suggesting what everyone else is saying in here isn't revisionist nonsense.
