RESOURCES HRT as a Minor Megathread

Hi all!

I've been seeing lots of posts here lately asking things like "I'm 17, can I get HRT?" and I thought it would be helpful for this subreddit to have one big thread to address that question. Below I've started writing some things, and I would like to know if anyone would be interested in adding on to this post (via comments and I'll add it later) so we have an up-to-date resource. I've done my best to only include information I know to be verifiably true, but please correct me if I have something wrong!

Disclaimer: None of us are acting as professional doctors or lawyers in this thread, so take our advice as the words of people who have experienced this, not as medical or legal advice.

Now, onto the questions and information:

"I'm a minor. Can I get HRT?"

Yes!

HRT in Ontario works on informed consent model, which, essentially, means that as long as you can understand the risks and benefits of a decision, you can make that decision.

Informed Consent does not explicitly outline an age where you are "able to make decisions". Therefore, it's up to your healthcare provider to assess your capacity to consent. In general, doctors are good about this, and as long as you know what the risks are, they'll give you the prescription.

"Will my parents know?"

The short answer is "if you don't want them to, then they won't". The long answer is more complicated than that. Let's start with getting the appointment:

Now that virtual appointments have been very unfortunately axed by good 'ole Doug Ford, in-person appointments are back to being some of the only options. In person appointments are obviously much more difficult to hide, as you need to physically go into the office and they often take longer.

Now, the ideal scenario is to explain to them what is going on and get their support, but obviously that doesn't work for everyone. If you're really in a pinch, lie. Make up symptoms that would send you to the doctor, and once you're there, explain the real problem. Often a great way to do this is to complain of symptoms of depression/anxiety, get a therapist, then talk about gender shit instead. This is not a recommended pathway. This is not sustainable. You have been warned.

In terms of your doctor blabbing to your parents:

Doctors are not allowed to disclose any personal information to any other person***

Patient privacy is a complicated beast, so I'll do my bets to explain here. According to PHIPA Section 23.1.i, any person, regardless of age, can decide to disclose or withhold medical information as long as they meet the criteria for informed consent. By default at a family doctor, your parents might be set up to know about your medical care. You have the right to remove them at any age as long as you understand the consequences of doing so. Ask about it. Voice your concerns. Self advocate.

The only time a doctor has to share your personal information comes in one of five circumstances:

"There are times the doctor has to breach confidentiality???"

Yes. There are five instances in which a doctor is allowed to disclose your personal information without your express consent (these are the same as a therapist, if you're interested). These apply to all patients, regardless of age:

  1. If the information is requested by a law enforcement agency or a court (as part of legal proceedings)
    1. This won't come into play for 99% of people, but if a court subpoenas information from your doctor, they are legally required to provide it.
  2. If there is neglect by another medical official (doctor, dentist, therapist, nurse, support worker, etc).
    1. Your care provider is required to inform the relevant authority (usually a medical board) so they can face disciplinary action.
  3. If you have intention to commit a crime or cause harm to another person.
    1. The standard here often requires an actual plan, and for it to be reasonable that you would actually carry out the act. Simply saying "sometimes my brother makes me angry and I want to hit him" would not invoke this exception because there is no direct plan, nor is there an indication that the action would be certain to be carried out.
  4. You have an intention to harm yourself
    1. This is by far the most controversial exception. Legally, your care provider is required to inform the authorities (usually police) if you intend to hurt or kill yourself. Most physicians understand that suicidal ideation (thinking of suicide) and having a suicide plan are different. This exception should only be invoked if there is a plan for self harm or suicide, not if there are thoughts or previous instances of it, however, it is always best to gauge what your physician will report.
  5. If there is evidence or reasonable suspicion of abuse or neglect of a person under the age of 16
    1. This includes sexual, emotional, physical abuse. Your physician has a duty to report it to either the appropriate children's aid society or abuse reporting centre. Same as #4, there can be situations where this gets tricky, and healthy doses of good judgement are in order

In general, you should always ask what information can be shared, and always ask questions surrounding consent and patient privacy.

Your doctor has to answer this, and they will often be eager to explain this as it's a very, very important part of practicing medicine.

"I thought you had to be sixteen to consent to treatment and remove parents from patient information?"

So did I, friend. But, as u/stacyah helpfully pointed out, this is not true. The confusion stems from a part of the code that says that at sixteen years of age, you can designate a person to be privy to your health information. However, you are able to decide who knows what at any age, as long as it's within the exceptions above.

I'm 12/13/14? Can I still get HRT then?"

Absolutely!

Informed consent does not have a defined age range. If you are able to consent, you are able to receive treatment. Obviously, there are added social challenges the younger you are as you seek transition care. However, legally speaking, there should be no additional barriers for you seeking treatment.

"Will I have to pay for anything?"

If you are eligible for OHIP, all consultations with your doctor will be free. Always bring your health card to your visits.

Drugs are first checked with your insurance provider, so if you have an open file with a pharmacy and they have a parents' insurance it will always go there first. If you aren't covered by private insurance and you're under 25, you're eligible for OHIP+, which you can learn more about here. There is still sometimes a co-pay with insurance, which can be frustrating. Typically though these costs are low ($5-$10). Seeking injected estradiol specifically also incurs an additional cost as you have to visit a compounding pharmacy, which is typically more expensive than your regular Costco or Rexall.

There are also two other relevant programs, the Ontario Drug Benefit and the Trillium Drug Benefit. These are based on income and can be accessed by residents over the age of 25. You can learn more about the Trillium Drug Benefit here.

This link will allow you to check the eligibility of most medications in Ontario.

Covered by OHIP+?

Estradiol (oral) Covered
Estradiol (injected) Not covered
Estradiol (gel) EAP Only*
Estrogen (patches) Unknown
Progesterone (oral) EAP Only*
Testosterone (oral) Covered (link)
Testosterone (injected) Some Restrictions, can still be covered
Testosterone (gel) Covered
Cyproterone/Bicalutamide/Sprionalactone Covered

*Covered only under the Exceptional Access Program (https://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/pro/programs/drugs/eap_mn.aspx#:~:text=The%20Exceptional%20Access%20Program%20(%20EAP,Drug%20Benefit%20(%20ODB%20)%20program%20program).)

Hope this helps, and please feel free to add anything I missed in the comments!

Thanks to u/stacyah and u/Valtharius for the information about informed consent!

Edit 1: Fixed lots of info about informed consent. Thanks u/stayah and u/Valtharius for the help!

Edit 2: Formatting and updates to drug coverage/how OHIP works

DISCUSSION (TW:SA) WARNING: An employee named Raj who works in Ottawa OCTranspo’s O-Train System is a sexual predator AND pedophile who has raped at least one person.

(From Ottawa) My (24NB/DG) friend S (21TF) has told me that Raj groomed her through Discord and made messages of how he liked her “young-looking teenaged breasts” and that he was “aroused by teenage virgins” (she was 19 at the time and like me is autistic, which he exploited). During a visit to his home, Raj coerced her into having anal sex with him (it happened back in 2025) but she didn’t realize what happened until two days later. She hasn’t reported it due to potential transphobia and retraumatization but she is now going to a rape survivor’s support group as of last month. She has revealed that prior to the assault, he violated OCtransit guidelines and Ottawa bylaw by allowing her into restricted areas WITHOUT NOTIFYING HIS EMPLOYERS. But I can’t do anything because she hasn’t told me which station he works at.

From what I have mentioned above, I believe he is also a child predator if the “teenager” comments are to come off of. I also believe that with his lack of regard for bylaws and guidelines by allowing an unauthorized person into restricted spaces, he has done similar things (both the guideline violations and the sexual assault) in the past. If you are a victim of an OCTranspo employee named Raj and live in Ottawa, I urge you to tell your stories and report him if possible.

Looking for advice on starting feminizing HRT in Quebec, Canada — struggling to find accessible care

Hey everyone,
I’ve wanted to transition for as long as I can remember, and I’m finally ready to take that step and start feminizing HRT.
I live in Quebec, Canada, and I’ve been struggling to find healthcare providers and an accessible pathway to get started. I really want to move forward, but the process feels overwhelming, and I don’t want to spend months waiting just to get help.
I’ve already had blood work done, and I’m ready to take the next step.
I’ve been looking into DIY HRT because I’m struggling to find an accessible medical option, but I would prefer a safe, reliable way to start.
If you’re from Quebec or Canada and have been through this, I’d really appreciate your advice.
How did you get started with feminizing HRT?
Are there any trans-friendly clinics or online services that you recommend?
Are there any resources for people who are considering DIY HRT because they can’t access care?
I’m not looking for judgment. I just want some guidance from people who understand what this process is like.
Thank you ❤️

dating app recs?

anyone have recommendations for dating apps?

I’m on bumble. it’s fine, but i get hardly any likes. i’m also in ottawa.

i’m a stealth straight trans guy, so queer dating apps aren’t really ideal, but i’m wondering if any guys have had good experiences / found a lot of options on specific apps, queer or not. as anyone else i’m basically looking for people in my area. they don’t have to be queer but obviously that can help with interest.

i feel like my best luck is with a bi woman, but like i said bumble hasnt really worked out for me.

Curious to hear about other guys’ experiences. thanks.

SEEKING ADVICE I Need Help With my gender affirming care benefit claims getting denied.

TLDR: MANULIFE SUX OWES ME MONEY GIVES EXCUSES FOR 4 MONTHS NOW. DO I GO TO THE GOVERNMENT OR HIRE A LAWYER.

Sorry this is a long post but I would appreciate any sort of feedback or help. So as the title suggests my benefit claims keep getting denied. This battle has been going on with manulife for 4 months now. They are my workplaces benefit provider, and my have $10k worth of gender affirming care benefits allotted to me.

This started back in June. I went for my first ever electrolysis treatment got the receipt submitted it and it got denied. So I called them up and asked why. They said
“ gender affirming care benefits don’t cover anything cosmetic” I said “gender affirmative care is pretty much only cosmetic related” the phone call ended with me pretty stumped

I did some digging and found in the benefit handbook that it actually DOES cover everything cosmetic from BA, FFS, laser, electrolysis, and anything else the government doesn’t cover. So I called them back.

This time they said “you need a doctors note with the diagnosis of gender dysphoria and the recommended treatment”. I got the doctors note from my endocrinologist. Submitted my claim and it got denied at this point they owed me $700 or so.

Then I had a day off in July so I decided to give manulife another call this time I recorded the phone call in case of any mischief. The lovely man on the phone said

Man “ you need a copy of your doctors degree from school”

Me “ the benefit handbook doesn’t say I need that it just says a doctors note with my diagnosis and recommended treatment”

Man “ oh yes I’m sorry you’re right we don’t actually need that information. Maybe attach a note that says it’s for gender affirming care. The claims department is probably not reading them properly”

Me “ that’s what the doctors note says and isn’t it your job to read them”

He apologized and got what money I was owed back to me.

In August I had a few more appointments. Sent them through and a few got approved and a few got denied. So this time I went to HR at work they contacted manulife and within a week I got an email from them apologizing, saying it wouldn’t happen again because they added a note to my profile saying I’m transgender or something. They paid me back that money.

I started going to more appointments thinking the issue was resolved. Boy was I wrong… 1 got accepted and 3 more got denied so I went to HR again gave them all my details which I am now giving you guys and I gave them proof. They said I should try adding the practitioners registration number to my claims to see if they get approved because they normally require that. Although then why have some been approved and other denied and why would I need that if they updated my profile.

After that talk with HR, Manulife emailed me asking for details and proof along with claim numbers and any information I could give them. Which HR already gave them. I sent them all the proof and details and then they apologized once again and said “ we understand how frustrating this can be and we are working to resolve this issue. We are going to find out what the processing requirements for gender affirming care are and get back to you in the meantime don’t submit any more receipts”

I have been going to more appointments and now they owe me around $1300. Which I would like back because Its money I’m entitled too. I’m wondering if i should take This to the government or hire a lawyer because it’s just weird and feels discriminatory. Considering I can go to a dentist and get the money back in 4 days.

TLDR: MANULIFE SUX OWES ME MONEY GIVES EXCUSES FOR 4 MONTHS NOW. DO I GO TO THE GOVERNMENT OR HIRE A LAWYER.

SEEKING ADVICE Is This Normal?

(using a throwaway by the way)

So I started estrogen 2 or 3-ish years ago.
To get a prescription the doctor said he needed to perform a genital examination, and I’m just wondering if this is standard practice, because I stumbled on a post somewhere that said it wasn’t.
For reference I was a teenager when I started and my doctor was a pediatrician if that makes any difference?

SEEKING ADVICE Are people politically radical in Canada?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi! I have a very serious question for people living in Canada. This question is not just meant for trans Canadians, but anyone in this thread in general. I’m a trans person currently living in the United States, and I’m considering moving to Canada using a Start-Up Visa. One thing I really hate about living here (and has caused me so much stress and depression) is that almost everyone here seems to be so politically radical. Everyone is either a leftist or far right, and there is no room for discussion or you’re socially ostracized. I consider myself someone who is much further left on the political spectrum, definitely left of the American Democratic Party, but I don’t know if I would call myself a leftist. People here don’t seem to like that I’m not so inclined to identify with a particular label. I understand that things are so dire here that there is a pressure to take a side, but as a disabled person who has had a lot on their plate for many years, I just don’t have the time for that. I vote and I get out the vote but people here are always pushing for you to do more when you can’t handle it. I have friends who are leftists, but people who accept me for my political beliefs and socioeconomic class together seem to be far and few, and navigating the social scene here is like walking in a minefield.

For more context, I’m also wondering what people think of rich people in Canada. Here in the U.S., I’m considered upper class because of an inheritance I received. I’m not ultra rich, but just barely enough so that it allows me to not have to work anymore or work minimally, but I’m also autistic and have PTSD and I really cannot work full-time - barely even part time. Leftists here seem to hate me for it even if I acknowledge this privilege (I understand why - the richest of my country is financially ruining the lower class and the wealth gap is only worsening), but it’s extremely hard to exist here when both sides hate me (one for being trans - the far right, one for being rich - leftists). I’m not open about being rich, but there are times when I have to explain how I’m able to afford not having to work. I just want nothing more than to live in a society where people are accepting of queer people, where people aren’t so polarized, and where people don’t really care so much about socioeconomic class. I need to escape this awful environment in the U.S., especially the kind of politics where both sides want me dead. Do you think Canadians would approve of me, especially Canadians in the LGBTQ+ (especially trans) community? Also, I’m 30, and wondering if there are generational differences in opinion with this too.

GTA I don't know what I'm going to do at this point

Things have been going rough lately and I just need to get some of it off my chest, and maybe get some advice.

I've been unemployed for almost two years at this point, and I don't know if I'm ever going to find work, I live in Toronto, Canada so there's a lot of people here, but even though I'm going on multiple interviews a week I've gotten 0 calls back.

On top of that I'm only getting about $700 a month from Ontario Works with $600 of that going to rent every month, and about $45 more going to HRT. And I just cored my vial so now I have to wait until the end of the month until I can get another one, so I get to feel awful for the next few weeks while my levels tank.

I can't even afford food at this point, I've been living off of local food banks and I appreciate so much what I'm able to get from them but eating the exact same food day after day, not able to eat more than twice a day has been wearing me down more and more. Even just getting some vegetables is out of my price point now.

I genuinely don't know how much longer I can keep doing this, I so badly just want to work and enjoy my life but every day feels like I'm just spending all my time trying to survive and barely making it work, I'm trying so hard but it seems like nothing I do works. My depression keeps getting worse, and I can't remember the last time I had a decent night of sleep.

I just needed to get all of this off my chest, thank you to anyone who listened.

SEEKING ADVICE Any trans-friendly makeover services in the GTA/Simcoe?

I’m practicing makeup, but I’m not great at it. I’m not comfortable going clothes shopping, either.

I’m looking for someplace/someone who can help me figure out some everyday style, and give me a foundation on understanding what makeup I should be using/ what styles suit me.

I’ve looked at TGCD, but their pics seem a bit too over-the top, not everyday wear kind of stuff.

I guess I want to know what’s possible for me right now.

OHIP Question about timeline for SRS at WCH

So I'll probably be getting my 2nd letter for SRS on the 26th. I understand it's not as simple as just getting my assessment and then getting on the waitlist. I'll have to wait for OHIP approval, then the referral, then the consultation and then hopefully get a surgery date.

Is it realistic to hope I get surgery in 3 years from now or so?

I'm just getting really tired of feeling the months and years go by not being allowed to just feel normal.

I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT GRS MONTREAL

GTA NV Electrolysis Updates (Toronto)

Hey all!

My name's Nat, I'm an electrologist in Toronto - I run NV Electrolysis which is a trans owned and operated clinic.

I last posted here a couple years ago after a client recommended it, and wanted to say hi again with some updates.

- Most importantly: Our intake is open, we're mostly caught up to our wait-list. It's a great time to say hi and start electrolysis.

- We hired 3 more electrologists, and a fourth is currently training!

- We moved to a new clinic space, then doubled in size again into the office next door in the Annex

- We hired a nurse to aid in a process we're calling NELI for surgery prep clearances (Nurse-assisted Electrolysis w/ Lidocaine Injections).

Interested in electrolysis? I'm not sure if reddit will let me post links lest I draw the ire of the spam filter, but if you google NV Electrolysis you'll find us and our contact page :)

Thanks to all our clients and our community for the continued support and trust <3

SEEKING ADVICE Should I wait until I'm 18 to legally change my name?

I'm currently 15, and I really want to get my name legally changed.

Im holding off for 2 main reasons: 1) My parents 2) Legal stuff

I dont think my parents will agree to me legally changing my name, but I'm hopeful that they might agree when I turn 16, or maybe now if I'm lucky.

As for the legal stuff, I'm worried that it's more complicated to get my name changed as a minor because of school, IDs, bank account, and stuff that I might not even be thinking about. I could do it, but Im worried my parents won't do everything-- I would do it if I could, I just dont think Im allowed to do it-- and it will mess me up in the future. I do know when I turn 18, I get my GOV ID, drivers license, pretty much documents and IDs, and I dont want to have to go through the process of all that.

I have known I was trans since I was 10, and I have been socially transitioning since then too. I came out to my parents at 12, so they know it's been at least 3 years. I also have my real name on my school documents instead of my dead name. I've had this name since I was about 13, 12/13. Im completely stealth irl. I want to change my legal name so bad but I idk if that's the right decision. If my parents were to agree, should I change it now or wait?
