So, the next steps after Grigory Romanov’s election to General Secretary is to develop our ideological policy.

This will primarily be done by voting on faction influence. But events and key questions will be presented to you as well, such as freedom of press and other social questions

Vote for the Faction you identify with and believe should have influence in our USSR.

Pinned comment is April 1985 factions in CC

Faction Ideology Descriptions
(Factions can be supported or strongly supported, banned and unbanned if a friendly faction is leading the CC. If you ban a faction the closest adjacent faction absorbs their numbers.)

Social Patriots (BANNED) - Social patriots strive to create a great country where everything is subordinated to the state, and the state, in return, meets the needs of the population.
Last known there were 5 Social Patriots in the CC.
Can be unbanned by Neo-Stalinists or National Democrats.

Informal-Socialists (BANNED) - Informal Socialists are representatives of informal youth and intellectual movements who are in favour of reforming the state from the standpoint of democratic socialism. They seek to become a 'constructive opposition' by criticising bureaucratization, the lack of real workers' self-government and the distortion of socialists ideals, without rejecting the foundations of the Soviet system.
Last known there were 35 Informal-Socialists in the CC
Can be unbanned if Reformists or LibDems lead the CC.

Neo-Stalinists - Neo-Stalinists are fascinated with the era of the Vozhd' of the Peoples and seek to implement Stalin's renewed ideas, taking into account the mistakes of 1953-1984 and global experience.
Conservatives - Conservatives aim to preserve the achievments of Brezhnev's rule, both its worst and best aspects, believing that the Soviet example has proven itself well.

Moderates - Moderates are inspired by the positive experiences of the NEP and Chinese reforms but want to avoid their negative aspects through democratization while maintaining the Party's vanguard role.
Reformists - Reformists dream of combining the Hungarian and Yugoslav economic paths with the liberal structure of Scandinavian socialism and are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve this.

Liberal Democrats (BANNED) - Liberal Democrats view the Soviet experience as entirely negative and seek to replace it with classical liberal democracy as quickly as possible.
Can be unbanned if Reformists or Informal Socialists lead the CC.

National Democrats (BANNED) - National Democrats strive to create a great people filled with spirituality and a fanatical belief in an organic state.
Can be unbanned if Social Patriots, Reformers or Liberal Democrats lead.

Question Hello, I’m someone who has recently started researching the Soviet Union and its history. Do you think Stalin harmed the Soviet Union, or did he contribute to its development? What are your thoughts? If you believe he contributed to its development, why do you think so?

Discussion What Are Your Thoughts on Alexei Kosygin and His Legacy in the USSR?

Post image
6 Upvotes

My dear friends and comrades of r/ussr!

I would very much like to hear your opinions on Alexei Nikolayevich Kosygin, one of the political figures in the Soviet Union and Chairman of the Council of Ministers from 1964 to 1980.

What do you think of him as a person, a statesman, and a political leader? How would you describe his personality, political views, economic ideas, leadership style, and overall contributions to the Soviet Union? I am particularly interested in your thoughts on his economic reforms, especially those introduced in 1965, his approach to economic planning and management, and his relationship with Brezhnev and the rest of the Soviet leadership.

What do you consider to be his greatest achievements, his biggest mistakes, and the opportunities that were missed? What did he do that was beneficial, harmful, or, ultimately, inconsequential for the USSR and its people? And, more broadly, how do you think Soviet history might have unfolded differently had Kosygin held greater influence?

I am genuinely curious to hear your perspectives, whether positive, negative, or somewhere in between. Historical arguments, personal interpretations, and differing viewpoints are all welcome! (within reason, of course.)

Warm regards and comradely greetings to you all!

History📜 100 years ago: Trotsky and Kamenev removed from politburo of Russian Communist Party

Post image
100 Upvotes

On October 25, 1926, a joint plenum of the Central Committee and Central Control Commission, dominated by Stalin’s bureaucratic faction, voted to remove from the politburo Leon Trotsky and Lev Kamenev, prominent Bolsheviks who had worked closely with Lenin, because they were leaders of the Joint Opposition to the Stalinist faction.

The plenum, as Soviet historian Vadim Rogovin notes, also “issued a warning to CC members Trotsky, Zinoviev, Kamenev, Piatakov, Yevdokimov, Sokolnikov, Smilga, and CC candidate-member Nikolaeva for their ‘violation of Party discipline’.” It removed a third leader of the Joint Opposition, Grigorii Zinoviev, from his role as chairman of the Communist International.

The removals followed by a week a tactical retreat by the Opposition in face of physical and administrative provocations by the Stalinists at Opposition speaking events. Trotsky described these methods and their significance:

"The struggle of ideas gave place to administrative mechanics: telephone summons of the party bureaucrats to attend the meetings of the workers’ locals, an accumulation of automobiles with hooting sirens in front of all the meetings, and a well-organized whistling and booing at the appearance of the oppositionists on the platform. The ruling faction exerted its pressure by a mechanical concentration of its forces, by threats and reprisals. Before the mass of the party had time to hear, grasp or say anything, they were afraid of the possibility of a split and a catastrophe."

The October 1926 removals from the Politburo marked the point at which the Stalinist bureaucracy abandoned even the pretense of inner-party democracy and was a decisive step in the degeneration of the Soviet state—the process Trotsky would later analyze as the rise of a Bonapartist bureaucracy over the working class.

The purge of the United Opposition was not a one-time settling of accounts but the opening of a process—once the apparatus had destroyed the opposition, it would inevitably turn on its own members, because a bureaucracy that rules by expulsion cannot stop at its first victims. The fate of Nikolai Bukharin, Alexei Rykov and Mikhail Tomsky in the 1930s would confirm this.

Question Minorities in underground economy/black market smuggling in 1980s - were they victims ?

In 1980s till fall of Soviet Union, there was a large underground economy or black market dependent on smuggling consumer goods etc which basically was sabotaging the State economy.

Apparently Soviet minorities like Chechens, Jews, Georgians and Azeris were disproportionately represented in this underground black market.

One argument is that they were victims since getting jobs in State Industries or Manufacturing was not easy for these minorities. Having few opportunities to make money they were drawn to the black economy.

Whereas Russians Ukrainians Belarusians were the bureaucrats and employees in Industries or Factories and thus could have a pick of making money from corruption without getting into crime.

Would you agree minorities who got involved in black market in USSR were victims of circumstance (as opposed to Slavs who had no excuse).

One of, if not the best Soviet general during the war. The mind behind Bagration, and also the man who managed to temporarily halt the German advance at Smolensk with the remnants of the 4th army known as Group Yartsevo. Rallying retreating men and whatever reserves he could get, he held the Yartsevo corridor until August 4th. On August 10, Group Yartsevo would be reformed into the 16th army for the battle of Moscow where he would defend the Volokolamsk highway.

He commanded the Don front in 1942, helping plan operation Uranus and later executing operation Koltso. He was also in charge of the central front during the battle of Kursk in 1943, where he managed to successfully halt the northern pincer.

In 1944 he would command his most famous operation, Bagration. Commanding the 1st Byelorussian front, Bagration would completely shatter the German central front and liberate Belarus from Nazi occupation.

In the last stages of the war, he would be in a perfect opportunity to strike Berlin, but was ordered by stalin to relocate and strike the northern flank in Pommerania instead, giving Konev and Zhukov the mission of capturing Berlin proper.
