I’m building a Eurorack clock - and you can already patch it in VCV Rack

A few days ago I showed ar r/synthdiy some of the early bench prototypes of CLOCK, an eight-output Eurorack clock I’m developing.

The hardware isn’t finished yet, but I didn’t want the project to exist only as photos, schematics and firmware until then. So I built an experimental VCV Rack version - and it’s already usable in actual patches.

CLOCK can run eight independent clocks, Euclidean rhythms and gate sequences, or act more traditionally as a master clock / divider setup. The Rack version is also useful for me during development: I can actually use the instrument, patch it with other modules and find workflow problems before they end up in hardware.

The project is being developed in the open. The firmware is already available on GitHub, including the Rack code. Once the physical hardware has been properly built and tested, I’ll publish the schematics, PCB files and build documentation there as well. The hardware is deliberately DIY-friendly and relatively straightforward to build; depending on sourcing, I’m currently aiming at roughly €30-40 in parts.

One caveat: the Rack plugin is still experimental and not in the VCV Library yet. For now, you’ll need to grab the source from GitHub and build it locally with the Rack SDK.

I’d be particularly interested in feedback from people who actually use Rack: Does the workflow make sense? How would you use eight rhythm/clock outputs? What would annoy you after ten minutes of patching?

And if you’re curious about the Rack implementation, the hardware behind it, timing/sync, or any of the design decisions: just ask.

So, I ported 3 engines from my handheld tracker to VCV Rack (two drum synths and a VCO)

Hi there, I'm developping Choochootracker, a handheld tracker for Linux consoles (also Android phones), and as part of this project I designed a collection of techno / industrial oriented sound engines and synth voices.

I made these available as VCV rack plugins. Pending addition to the library, they are available from my Github: https://github.com/paiheulevrai/choochoorack/releases/tag/v0.2.0

MME: a gritty and aggressive VCO inspired by Noise Engineering and Mutable Warps.
Bogie: a jack of all trade drum synth inspired by the Machinedrum.
Sintered: MME for percussions. Very weird, very wild, very experimental.

They all come with several models and algo and are good for dirty, in your face, digital sounds. If you do techno, IDM, noise, indus or that kind of things... you might find these useful.

Switching between patterns with SEQ3 and a Sequential Switch

Learn how to combine three different sequences into one evolving pattern in VCV Rack.

In this tutorial, we build a patch using three SEQ3 sequencers and a 4:1 Sequential Switch to switch between different sequences without repatching.

We’ll build the patch step by step, connect the gates and pitch CV, use an LFO as a clock divider to control the sequence switching, and send the selected CV through a Quantizer set to the Minor Pentatonic scale.

Then we’ll shape the sound with VCOs, envelopes, a filter and VCA MIX, before adding a Ping-Pong delay to finish the patch.

The rack can also work as a kind of fixed melody practice setup: once everything is patched, you can experiment with new melodies on the three SEQ3s and explore different ways of making the sequences interact with and influence each other, causing the main melody to evolve and change.

This is a simple but powerful technique for creating longer, more varied sequences from multiple patterns while keeping everything inside a single VCV Rack patch.

It's something I thought was worth recording. It's all VCV, no vst's. Let me know if you like it. code name: Theta Ambient

Very Specific Question About library

Apparently this is really hard for google and my other search engines to understand, so any insight would be helpful

I want to filter my module browser in vcvrack by two or more brands at the same time.

for to state this with pictures, it is currently showing all the modules by vcv

now it is showing modules made by Surge XT

I want to see both when i open my menu at the same time

the ui kind of implies this may be possible given the checkmark symbol. I could potentially see how that is used to signify filtering by multiple brands, but I cannot figure out which hotkeys and mouse presses actually let me do this.

is this possible? If not, is there a workaround? I have like 1000 modules in my library, and being able to limit myself to specific ranges of brands would be handy for my creative process :3

Map of Plaits Vocal Sounds?

Has anyone mapped out how to trigger the various words in Plaits or any of its many ports to VCV?

I started working out the voltages for the Audible Instruments version, with a view to a more precise use of the available sounds. Spelling out a name, for example.

I've got as far as the banks which are controlled by the Harmonic knob

  • colors: 36-48%
  • numbers: 49-60%
  • alphabet: 61-72%
  • NATO alphabet: 73-90%
  • Words: 91-100%

However! These numbers are for going up the scale. If I start out high and work down, I get slightly different numbers.

I just don't want to dick around with this if someone has already done it.

Not much thinking, just quick patching and twiddling knobs. Loom, GSX & Slice. Dark Energy fully randomized. Swen for random gates. Puffy's on a roll.

DIY FM sounds made by cross modulating sine VCOs with AM and oscillator sync, then using the resulting output as an FM signal.

Kind of complicated to explain, might do a tutorial on this!

Seeded Melodies, Evolving Drums — Gentle IDM Patch with Ormer Modular SHOAL (VCV Rack)

Thumbnail

Since SHOAL is officially out now, I figured I'd share this patch again.

A gentle IDM patch built around a single sequencer — Shoal by Ormer Modular, an 8-track generative melody sequencer. Each track uses a numeric seed, so the patterns are deterministic and repeatable.

Six tracks feed FM synth voices (Bogaudio FMOp), while two tracks drive drums (docB Drums), with Branches adding probability-based triggering. Everything then goes through Chronoblob2 delay into a shared Valley Plateau reverb.

One clock, eight evolving voices, and plenty of room for variation.

FLOCK granular voice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Preview of FLOCK coming to VCV Rack soon. This one is a granular voice which defaults to synthetic grain generation but can be paired with an expander to pull grains from a freeze-able buffer. In my opinion synthetic granular is an interesting area which I'd like to keep exploring through this module.

FLOCK spawns 1 to 1024 birds, each of which can be speaking at a set rate. 1v/oct and gate provokes sound. Lag controls how quickly the new pitch spreads across the flock (high values act like a delay). Lattitude and Structure control how closely each bird will give you the set pitch. Chirp, Quantize and Variety add more variation to the way each bird interprets the pitch.

But the most fun control is Startle which sends a hawk towards the flock, causing all in its path to disperse. But don't worry, all the birds have escaped the hawk's talons (at least so far).

Join the discord if you'd like a pre-release peek at FLOCK.

Already teaching Ableton online, thought why not try VCV. For all of you just starting out OR need a jump start.
