DISCUSSION We need more commentators

Renee Montgomery will cover the WNBA Finals on USA Network as a studio analyst while co-owning the Atlanta Dream, one of the two teams competing.

She told FOS she has no bias restrictions imposed by USA Network or her other employers, and a source with the network confirmed it.

To be fair, though Ryan and Rebecca would probably be in the same position of scrutiny if Fever made it that far

edit: the bird and taurasi show avoided this by somehow being canceled before uconn won their championship and subsequent run the next year

OPINION PIECE Gambling is out of control

Don’t know if anyone has been watching any of the WNBL which started the week on YouTube but watched a game on Thursday (Jewels first game worth checking out on replay if just for fun half time chats with Lauren Jackson and Alanna Smith) and now watching Perth Lynx and Georgia Amoore now.

The entire live chat is just gambling chat. Like literally no chat about the game at all just people, mostly men, talking about hedge bets and lines to bet and then shitting on the players when they aren’t getting them their money.

I know it happens in the W too but it’s not as extremely obvious and depressing with the WNBL that it is literally all anyone’s talking about, especially when the game has been really good. Mystics fans you should be pumped about Amoore, she is gonna be so good.

We’ve seen a bunch of players in the W and the MNBA too say the abuse they get from gamblers because they miss a FT or something and it’s just so gross.

You’re never gonna separate sports from gambling but these WNBL games have just been so offensive. Last I looked 800 comments and I would say 750 of those are gambling relating.

Edit: Added context of games

NEWS “I’m not going to have blood on my hands.” Why Nicole Noren, a decorated ESPN producer, quit in protest of sports gambling.

Thought this was interesting given ESPN’s role and how many of us on the thread don’t like seeing the sports gambling commercials.

I realize there are gamblers among us and who I am to judge 🤷🏻‍♀️

But there is rare discussion of critical perspectives of sports gambling by athletes, commentators or key networks.

What a roster. Still insane to me they couldn’t pull it off, I’d argue they’re much better than any of the Liberty’s “superteam” rosters since 2023.

DISCUSSION Feeling real FOMO watching the finals from home. Anyone else? 😂

If I lived ANYWHERE close to Ballhalla or State Farm Arena, I would be catching every in-person game I could, even if I was limited to nose-bleed seats. As it is, I’m just too far away for it to make financial sense but the fomo is reaaaal. I want to see my Dream Girls take it home in 5! (Respectfully, Valks, respectfully)

Who else is suffering with me?

  • Draymond and Sheryl Swoopes on why Angel Reese makes this WNBA Finals must-watch.
  • "You should tune into the finals because of Angel Reese... She alone is worth the price of the ticket...
  • Angel is gonna have people watching this because there's a large consortium of people who wants to see her succeed.
  • There's an even larger group of people who wants to see her fail, and they're gonna watch to see her fail."
