I’ve been waiting a long time to write those words.

The Shadow Frontier, Book One of The Earthsong Chronicles, is now available on Amazon Kindle!

Seeing this story actually published, with a real Amazon page and real readers able to discover it, is a little surreal.

What began as an idea about a secret history hidden behind the legends of the American frontier eventually became Buffalo Bill, Suni Rhodes, Annie Oakley, John Henry, Paul Bunyan, and a war against creatures the history books conveniently forgot to mention.

And now it belongs to readers.

To celebrate the launch, I’m offering the Kindle edition for just 99¢ through September 30!

If historical fantasy, the Old West, American folklore, legendary heroes, hidden organizations, and things lurking in the darkness sound like your kind of story, I hope you’ll give it a try.

And if you enjoy it, an Amazon review would mean more to a first-time author than you might imagine.

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me, read early versions, offered advice, or simply asked, “How’s the book coming?” along the way. Today is a pretty special day.

The frontier you learned about in the history books was only half the story.

Welcome to The Shadow Frontier.

📖 Available NOW on Kindle for just 99¢ through September 30!

A Devil-worshipping cult has corrupted society and banished the opposition as Outlaws. Those Outlaws must now take justice and vengeance into their own hands.

Cardslinger is a tactical card game played in a weird west world. You choose two Outlaws at the beginning of every run that share a deck consisting of personal cards and neutral cards. Personal cards can only be played on the corresponding Outlaw and neutral cards can be played on both.

During your run you can find trinkets to equip your Outlaws with to further strengthen their abilities.

Craft the deck to your liking, gather trinkets and grow to defeat the evil cult.

I got tired of waiting for more books in this specific niche, so I spent the last year writing my own. My latest novel, Seven Serpents Assembled, drops on Amazon on June 10th. It is a 110,000-word grimdark Western that focuses on a band of desperate individuals hunting down a threat in a high desert where blood spills incredibly easy. Think Joe Abercrombie's Red Country meets Blood Meridian.
For the authors and readers here: what are your favorite examples of dark, gritty, or weird Western elements in fiction? What tropes do you think are criminally underused on the frontier?
(If you want to track the launch, you can find my video teasers on my YouTube channel page or search "Seth Hobbs Seven Serpents Assembled" on Amazon on June 10th). Let's discuss!

Hey everyone. Long-time lurker. I'm close to finishing my debut novel and wanted to ask the people who actually live in this genre whether it fits.

Here's the pitch:

Buffalo Bill and the Veil of Shadows is narrated by William F. Cody, looking back on some of the strangest years of his life. In 1885, something ancient is stirring in the Montana frontier. A secret organization called the Veil of Shadows has spent centiries containing supernatural threats tied to a force woven into the land itself, something the Lakota call the Earthsong. It doesn't choose people. It just acts on whatever it touches, amplifying what's already there. Some come out gifted. Others come out something else entirely.

Bill assembles a team: Annie Oakley, who can see a heartbeat into the future and never missed a shot. John Henry, a poweful engineering genius who builds things most men can't dream. Paul Bunyan, a gentle giant carrying wounds from a religious community that cast him out. And at the center, a young mixed-heritage Lakota man named Suni Rhodes, whose grandfather taught him to read what the land remembers.

The villain is a mind-reader who believes the world needs remaking. The mythology runs deep, all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia.

It's rooted in real history and American folklore, and it takes its emotional weight seriously. Bill's voice is theatrical and a little world-weary, like a showman finally letting the mask slip.

Does this live in Weird West, or am I knocking on the wrong door?

Howdy Everyone! I've made my book The Education of Young Dalton Reid free this weekend. It's the story of a young man seeking his fame and fortune on the frontier of a recently settled planet, and finding only trouble! Here's the full blurb:

On the planet Gaea, opportunities are hard to come by. Setting out for the Tanami frontier, young Dalton Reid hopes to make his fortune with nothing but his horse and the last few bits in his pocket. Before he can even begin, the dastardly Roscoe, professional cattle rustler and murderer, cheats him out of his savings.

There’s no shortage of folks in Hensonville willing to give Reid the education he needs to survive, if he’s willing to play by their rules. Paloma Griswell’s ready to work him to the bone on her ranch. The straight and narrow is what old Marshal Rawlins expects. Bellyaching Chip Reegan just wants to put him in his place. Even Roscoe wants him to join the gang as they plan their biggest heist yet.

Only Reid can decide what type of man he wants to be as he seeks fortune and fame–or will it be infamy?

-----------------

Inspired by classic westerns, the Gunslingers of Gaea series is a science fiction / western mash-up devised in the best traditions of the dime store paperback. It is part of the 10 Cent Universe – a genre-bending macrocosm – that began with the science fiction / mystery series The Starship Australis Mysteries.

I'd love some feedback either directly, or through honest ratings and reviews.
