I am a human fainting goat. AMA!

Hello all! I'm 26F, and I have the same genetic condition that causes fainting goats to "faint".

It's called Myotonia Congenita, a rare muscular disorder affecting approximately 1 in 100,000 people. For comparison, your lifetime odds of being struck by lightning in the US are about 1 in 15,300!

With that said, neither I nor the goats actually lose conciousness when we fall. Myotonia Congenita is a muscular channelopathy, meaning the chloride channels in my skeletal muscles don't function properly. This interferes with the electrical signals that control muscle relaxation, causing my muscles to stiffen or temporarily lock up after contracting.

The condition can also cause unusually large muscles that develop with relatively little effort, despite sometimes experiencing profound muscle weakness. Similar forms of myotonia have been observed in dogs, cats, and of course, goats! There are also paralytic and dystrophic variants found in humans.

I was diagnosed at 19 via genetic testing. I am happy to answer any questions about my condition, it's effects on ny everyday life, and what it's like being a human fainting goat!

I work at Chuck E Cheese, AMA

My location is one of three new “Adventure World” locations, which has a heavy emphasis on play versus games so it’s predominantly play structures. I’m an “attendant” meaning my job is predominantly cleaning, ensuring kids are following the rules, general hospitality such as greeting and conversing with guests, and yes, summoning the rat every 30 minutes, which I do essentially every time he comes out because it’s the aspect of the job that I’m best at and the apathetic teens I work with don’t have the ✨pizzaz✨ for it.

I am also ~30, not that I personally think it matters what job I have at this age. I am on disability for a myriad of reasons so if I want extra money, I need a job that won’t pay me so much that I lose my benefits. The fact that I can work ~20 hours a week part time is not evidence that I am capable of obtaining forklift certification or whatever, this is a very easy gig.

I died while on a jog(had a cardiac arrest) and woke up 3 months later thinking I was waking up the day after. AMA

There was a very low chance of survival because it happened out of a hospital setting without any medics nearby. Everyone says I’m strong for surviving but I didn’t do anything at all, all I remember was going to sleep, was out for 3 months but in my head it was 3 hours later. Ask me anything (AMA)

I had Guillain-Barre Syndrome-AMA!

Context: I got diagnosed in 2017(at the age of 9). 25th January to be specific. I had (stil have but not as frequent)a bad history of stomach aches. So on 25th Jan I felt a weird feeling like a stomach ache but I ignored it and went to school, at school I was feeling weak, really weak, like no strength to even lift a pencil, I somehow made it to the end and while I was on stairs, I collapsed then teacher panicked, ran towards me, picked me up, gave me water and all. Then sent me home with a teacher. So at home I couldn't climb the stairs as I was feeling weak. After the help of my family Im finally on my bed but it was weird, so my grandparents took me to a public hospital nearby in the evening and there the doc gave me some injection (don't remember what) I was kind of fine and then on the next day when I jumped from the bed, I fell cause my legs weren't working, then family rushed and took me to a hospital, there doc checked me gave me ivig treatment then I got shifted to a better hospital after 2 days, there I again got ivig treatment while I was on ventilator and then after 8 days I again shifted to another hospital, there I was on ventilator, I got 2 endoscopies cause at that time I had pneumonia, my right lung was sticking to my left lung. The Movement of my whole body was gone, I was only able to move my neck and above my neck, then one day, I was declared dead by the docs (idk it was what they thought or they jumped on the conclusion way too quickly) because after few chest compressions I was back, then I used to get 4-5 blood tests everyday, so I had to get some blood from the blood bank tok cause of blood deficiency, then I got a tracheostomy and after everything, from Jan 25 2017, I started walking in August 2017 and without support, I think it was sep or oct of 2017 and now it's been like 9 years??? I passed my school, and I'm gonna start uni in a couple of months. Everything is fine, just have foot drop. Anyways, thank you for reading the whole para and if u have any questions about facing physical problems, mental. How my family treated me, how it was to go back to school after a year. Just ask!!!!

Edit- so I'm posting it again idk why ig awareness? Ppl still don't know about GBS. So just ask!!!. I'll reply to all of them!!

For a few years, I ran an exotic animal rescue, AMA

In my early twenties, I fell down an accidental path of exotic animal; rescuing. It started with one bearded dragon when i was working at a pet store, and within the year i was renting a business building and had snakes, lizards, birds, insects, you name it. I even got into volunteer work with alligators during the time. AMA.

I rode Frieght Trains in America, Canada and Mexico/South America for the better part of 20 years now, AMA

I did one of these like four or five years ago, and didn't have a very reliable phone/internet connection at the time, so I couldn't follow thru with it the way I would have really liked.

But yes, as the title says, im a bona-fide for better or worse modern American Hobo in every sense of the word. The full Monty. Eating out of dumpsters, playing music on every street corner in the country, and of course, using every single less than legal mode of free transportation there is, mainly frieght trains.

ASK ME ANYTHING!

I came to Russia for the first time since the war started. AMA

• Upvotes

I’ve lived in Moscow for 13 years, but when the war started my family and I left the country almost immediately. I have relatives in Kyiv and my dad spent his childhood in Ukraine. Now when I think or say something that does not agree with the current government I feel like I’m committing a thoughtcrime lol despite the fact that visually not much has changed. They even kept the tradition of relaying tiles in the city centre every few months. If anyone here is from Moscow you know what I’m talking about.
So yeah, ask me anything

I’m 32M and live in the Midwest. I live in a small acreage farm and have about 30,000ish bees for honey, chickens, farm dogs, and cattle. I also am a former game warden who left that career and teach middle school math. Probably not your most interesting person in the world, but maybe I am. AMA

I am a guy with 2 moms AMA

I’m 16M and I have two moms. I wasn’t adopted or born through IVF or anything like that. My biological mom got pregnant with me under horrible circumstances, but she decided to keep me. While she was still pregnant with me, she met my other mom, and they became friends before eventually starting to date. So my mom has always been in my life I’m their only child. AMA

I Overcame severe Agoraphobia- AMA!

There was a point in my life I did not leave my house unless it was for school or work. If I shopped it was only with my mom & I didn’t like to be alone. After many years with the help of my best friend who is old enough to be my second mom I now enjoy leaving my home, meeting other family & friends, travel, and have gotten a lot better about meeting strangers & being able to converse with them. I am now making steps towards living independently in my own apartment. I used to have severe physical symptoms of my anxiety that made me very sick & now I almost never do.

I survived the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in CA history, AMA

Like the title says, I survived the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in CA history. It's been about 8 yrs this November.

Side note I also am finally learning boundaries and have unfortunately lost my best friend, and my relationship w my sister is strained so if you have questions about boundary setting or losing friends/family due to it, those would be appropriate questions too.

I work at a state run facility where people from ages 12-80 live full time sometimes the rest of their life after being admitted. There are very broad reason people live here some are bed bound, for some this was their last chance before jail/juvie, and we even have an individual who chooses to live here. Ask me anything!

I was very against circumcision but got it done. AMA

I was extremely anti-circumcision but after years of going back and forth with some bedroom issues, I ended up deciding on a 'minimal' circumcision as a 'least worst' option since it appeared to be the only way to resolve the issues. I did not want a full circumcision and all the doctors I talked with would only perform a full circumcision.

Finally, about a year later, I found a doctor who was willing to do a partial circumcision.

I woke up fully circumcised anyways.

Because I wasn't really forced into it (medically urgent crowd), but I also didn't exactly choose it (aesthetic/religious/peer pressure/etc... crowd), I feel it gives me a very unique unbiased perspective. I got cut 10 years ago, so I also know the before/after better than most.

AMA

Update: Ok, I'm going to sign off for now but will check back periodically. Hopefully I introduced a more unbiased perspective than the usual black and white screaming matches haha

My twin was sentenced to a decade in prison, he has 6 years left. AMA

4 years ago he went to prison. Can't be super specific here due to the rules, but i can get into it a bit in the replies. He is, however, a monster. I find answering questions and talking about it to be therapuetic and its not a topic I really want to bring up to people who know me personally.

edit: 10 years plus 20 years on the registry, yes THAT registry
