Arizona caca? In Belgium?
What am I missing?
39
u/DandyLullaby 1d ago
The coalition of the current political parties is called the arizona coalition.
Not sure why, it is coined by the media when it got formed after elections22
u/DandyLullaby 1d ago
It is cause the colors of the parties involved are in the Arizona state flag.
Red: soicialists, Blue: liberals, Orange: christian democrats, Yellow: Flemish nationalists29
u/aagjevraagje 1d ago
Pfoe you really have to know your aardrijkskunde to follow Belgian politics
13
u/DandyLullaby 1d ago
I can just imagen the journalists scrolling through flags to pick the nickname for the coalition… what about the Comoros flag?
Nah, we mis the green party and nobody knows that flag man…8
u/DC8008008 1d ago
in Spanish that's Arizona shit lol
14
u/Manonono_ 1d ago
And that’s exactly what it says in French too ;)
2
u/jofra6 23h ago edited 21h ago
Kind of, caca is a normal word for poop in French, while it is considered very impolite in Spanish.
0
u/DandyLullaby 23h ago
The person could even be Spanish, Brussels is very multi cultural with a lot of expats and immigrants from all over the world especially in the European district
0
u/abcdefghijklnmopqrts 21h ago
I wouldn't say it's ''normal'', it's very childish but not particularly vulgar (that would be ''merde'')
2
u/jofra6 21h ago
Reread what I wrote. Caca in Spanish is roughly analogous to merde in French. Yes, technically Spanish has mierda, but it's much stronger than a normal « merde ».
1
u/abcdefghijklnmopqrts 21h ago
Yes, let's have a heated argument on reddit about different slang terms for feces. Seriously though, I don't see why you think we disagree? I wasn't arguing that caca is not vulgar in Spanish.

I tried to capture some picture during the same protest using a vintage ENG camcorder, I couldn't get anything remotely as good as your work here.

What is the context of the 4th image? Who are the people in the helmets, and why do they (seeming to be civilians) have people detained?

They are not civilians, but police. The orange band around their arm has a blue and white logo on it, which is the official logo of our Belgian police force.

Young people realising that things never change. These kinds of protests are once a decade.

u/Logan_MacGyver 15h ago edited 15h ago
Last year they were weekly in Budapest. But the energy was more let's bring some beers and a Bluetooth speaker and chill. No energy'
2
u/shadefreeze 18h ago
Omg "press jacket" as someone from Belgium this is crazy to me 😅 this is just protest gone too far.. It's ironic cause this is what America should have looked like after all the shit the government has put people through. We just protest a lot, and unfortunately, sometimes that comes with extremists that start destroying everything they can.
3
4
u/Anon_Acad 1d ago
Great work!
An incidental query: at what threshold of violence does it make sense to stop calling it a protest and more along the lines of vandalism and terrorism?
24
u/kushoida 1d ago
There’s a deep feeling in the youth of not being listened to and considered by politicians. It’s a mix of anger, pessimism and nihilism. You can see it spreading in Europe.
2
2
u/Takahashi-2030 1d ago
Spreading in Europe? Spreading everywhere you mean. Ah yeah, not in China and RuSSia, because when you open your mouth over there, you spend the rest in your life in jail, until you die from some form of “pneumonia”.

I have one for you: how much oppression would you tolerate before resorting to violence?
1
u/debackerl 23h ago
There is oppressed is many African states, there is in Russia, in Belarus, there was in Hungary. I'm Belgian myself, there is nothing defined by 'oppression' here.
Far left people feel oppressed in a liberal state, and liberal people feel oppressed in a far left state. But it's not real oppression as stated above. I'm not entering politics in this sub, just trying to give a neutral view without taking one side.
2
u/Greebo-the-tomcat 20h ago
This is Belgium, a liberal democracy with a strong rule of law. These people are not being oppressed in any way, you clearly have no clue what's going on or any conception of what actual repression looks like. Source: I'm Belgian myself, born and raised.
3
u/AJ__2003 18h ago

Yeah ok that came out wrong lol. I meant about not having a clue what's going on here. In another comment OP was casting doubt on my claim there was no oppression going on, so I felt compelled to point out I'm from there.
Edit: but your comment confirmed my point, it's ridiculous to claim that the Belgian government oppresses its citizens. Thank god we don't know what actual repression looks like.
2
u/AJ__2003 18h ago
-1
u/Greebo-the-tomcat 17h ago edited 17h ago

These people aren’t oppressed. They have access to the west. They are hooligans looking for an excuse to riot.

Call it vandalism
People have the right to protest, and they should if they think it’s justified.
But this shit is helping nobody.
Politicians don’t care if a rando’s store is put on fire and robbed because of “acab”.
If you go somewhere and you have to hide your face, everyone knows you’re gonna do shit that isn’t correct.IMO, this isn’t protesting, this is vandalism.
(Those 90% of the good guys protesting peacefully, they have my respect, those other shits, they can rot wherever)
2
u/-some-dude-online 20h ago
You clearly were not present. When you see multiple policemen beating on a single young small female protestor your urge to break stuff kind of intensifies.
0
u/BelgianBeerGuy 19h ago
Weird flex to start breaking stuff when you see a woman in distress instead of trying to help her in a non violent way
But hey, you do you.
2

u/Gillennial 1d ago
I was there on that protest, filming the events. Police was systematically blocking all the exists except one, one that was filled with tear gas. If you wore protection, they consider you as vandals, if you complied to having your face and lungs burned then you could proceed to the next gas trap. That happened to all the people who weren't protected by syndicated crowd, so as soon as the brightly coloured crowd was gone, the police would start gazing everybody else.
I understand your point about vandals, but even amongst those "10 % vandals" you speak about, only a small fraction was actually vandalising.1
u/flannhell 17h ago
When the time comes, you will find yourself wanting to do more than stand around holding a sign or tick a box on a ballot
-3
u/donnismamma 1d ago
Depends on how hard these kids are being squeezed by the government. In this case it's an appropriate response given the circumstances.
0
u/No-swimming-pool 1d ago
Oh we're already way past that point.
These people don't have anything to do with the protest, they just want to break stuff.
As for the protests, it's sad that stuff gets more expensive, but that's usually the case after uncontrolled overspending.
-7
u/camu_photo 1d ago edited 1d ago
Depends on the skin color of the participants and whether or not it actually has any potential to scare rich people. Either way, I don't think we should be talking about politics here, photography has always been apolitical, and we should keep it that way.

6
u/ceruleanstones 1d ago
A.k.a, a protest. Protests include more than merely peaceful protests. If it didn't, calling a protest peaceful would be redundant
3
u/DoktorBohr 1d ago
Normally when protests descend into burning infrastructure and/or people's possessions they are called riots. For example, the LA riots, Watts riots, Paris '68 riots, the Paris riots of 2005, etc. Reluctance to apply the term to the movement depends on one's political investment in the group participating.
1
u/Goobylul 1d ago
Protest and riots aren't the same thing bud. Protests are peaceful by definition.
