I generated a 9x9 puzzle collection from my own mistakes on OGS

"Opus, fetch my OGS 9x9 games, rent a GPU server on Vast and analyze them with KataGo, classify the mistakes, generate a set of 300 puzzles and publish them as a puzzle collection back on OGS"

Love how this is a light afternoon pastime in 2026. I love this timeline.

tsumego I made a website for generating Tsumego PDFs

It generates printable PDFs in a layout inspired by the popular Encyclopedia of Life and Death PDFs, and:

  • can randomise problem order and board orientation, and randomly flip colours so it's not just black to play
  • can include solutions
  • allows you to customise the layout (everything can be made smaller to cram as much as reasonable on a page, or larger, if you want)
  • right now accepts custom SGF or it can load collections directly from the OGS puzzles section
  • under the hood it generates and compiles LaTeX - the result looks good on paper, and you can download and modify the LaTeX file for more custom formatting

Link: tsumego-print.mi57y.pl

The UI needs some work, in the near future I want to rework the options to be more understandable, and to allow to select only some problems from a collection. But I wanted to get it out there because I think it's already in a pretty usable state.

Active go clubs in Barcelona or Rome?

Hi! I'll be in Barcelona and then Rome these next two weeks and, depending on schedule, was hoping to be able to find time to meet some local go players. I found clubs in both cities on the baduk club map, but not sure how up to date the information is. Does anyone have any recent knowledge on go meetups in either city?

Thank you!

Hi everyone!

I'm Tang Tianyuan, a professional Go player from China.

Today, I'd like to share a video explaining approximately how many points a single move is worth in Go.

Here's the video:

newbie question Liberty šŸ—½

We know we can't place a stone on an intersection that doesn't offer at least one liberty--however is it legal to place a stone in the encircled, on that intersection being that it does offer several liberties through extension?

promotional How to Tell If Used Clamshell (Hamaguri) Go Stones Are Genuine

I work making and grading go stones, and one question I get a lot is: "I bought (or was given) a set of used clamshell stones. How can I tell if they're real?" So I've put together some points you can check yourself, without sending them off for appraisal.

  1. Stripe pattern (shell grain)

Genuine shell stones have natural stripes (growth lines) on one side, and no two stones are exactly alike. Plastic "clamshell-style" stones usually either have no stripes at all, or every stone in the set has the identical pattern. Placing a stone on your phone's flashlight makes the stripes much easier to see. Compare all the stones, and if the patterns look stamped out identically, be careful.

  1. Scratches and chips

Shell naturally tends to develop small edge chips over the years. Minor chips are nothing unusual, but stones with large chips, whatever the material, should normally have been rejected at the grading stage.

  1. Uneven whiteness

Genuine shell has a slightly creamy white that is consistent across the whole stone. If part of a stone is extremely white while another part looks dull, it is likely low-quality material or a damaged stone.

  1. Weight

This is the quickest check. Plastic stones feel noticeably light in the hand. Even without a reference stone to compare against, simply checking whether the weight varies between stones in the same set can tell you a lot.

  1. Hyuga vs. Mexican shell (a difference in origin, not real vs. fake)

Stones made from Hyuga (Japan) shell and Mexican shell differ slightly in their shade of white and in how the stripes appear. Hyuga stones have a slightly warmer white, with finer stripes that curve slightly in the middle. Mexican stones are a bright, almost bluish white, with stripes that run straight. Neither one is fake; it is simply the natural character of the material from each origin.

I think I lost. I am Black. We didn't have time to continue or attempt to score.

That said, if this game has been around for as long as people say it has--how long has the rules for scoring been around? I would imagine Chinese rules are older.

How do you fit tsumego into your day?

I've been trying to make tsumego a habit and I keep switching between two approaches: a few problems every day (5 to 10 minutes) or one longer session on the weekend.

Short daily sets are easier to keep up, but I'm not sure I'm reading deep enough. Longer sessions feel more serious, but I skip them more often.

What works for you? Do you read each problem all the way before checking the answer, or do you give yourself a time limit?

go news WVJB: a joseki browser, now with Kogo’s Joseki Dictionary and Flying Knife Joseki. Looking for contributors!

Hi everyone,

I’ve been working on WeiqiVision's Joseki Browser (WVJB), a tool that makes it easier to explore joseki libraries in one place.

What’s available right now

  • Kogo’s Joseki Dictionary (KJD)
  • Flying Knife Joseki (FKJ)

What I’d like to add next
I’d love to expand the collection with more libraries, such as Modern Joseki Selection or Battle Joseki, or themed ones (Cho's Joseki Recipes?) and I’m open to other suggestions too.

Is there a public resource you’d like to see here?

Where I could use your help
Adding a new library takes time and a good understanding of the material, so I’d really appreciate help from experienced players. You could contribute by:

  • sharing your "secret" joseki selection (lol!) / preparing or checking joseki data for a new library
  • suggesting which libraries are most useful to the community
  • reporting bugs or sharing ideas for improvements

If you’re interested, leave a comment or send me a DM.

Thanks for reading, and happy studying!

newbie question Why do 99% of players not collaborate and tend to disparage?

A reflection.

tl;dr
why people vote -1 when the post is not a poll?

Given that EidoGo has become obsolete, I decided to create a new joseki viewer site, with the aim of sharing thematic collections and making them available to everyone.

Putting together the first version didn't take much effort: just spare time and session after session using AI agents to extract the code strictly necessary for this purpose from an app of mine.

It was a success (it is already fully functional, does something new in a modern, cross-platform way... and has great potential, too)... so I publicly announced its existence here.

Negative reactions.

I asked for collaboration here to expand the libraries (to make it even more useful), but I received more downvotes.

I don't get it.

Thumbs-down votes make sense in a poll. But mine wasn't a poll.

Now I expect this post to get downvoted too. I won't be disappointed.

To anyone who might bother saying the downvote is due to the use of AI: I’ll answer in advance that you remind me of the people who, a century or two ago, railed against milk pasteurization and steam trains.

Otherwise, I look forward to comments... and I remain open to collaboration.

Jowa vs Gennan, 150 stones killed...

I came across a mention of an amazing historical game with literally hundreds of stones captured or killed. But I couldn't find anything more until I saw a vague reference to Matthew Macfadyen reviewing it in a British Go Journal from the 1980s. With amazing luck, I still have that issue (March 1981), so I offer it here for your enjoyment...

SGF here: https://homepages.cwi.nl/~aeb/go/games/games/ancient/Honinbo_Jowa/139.sgf
(Gennan was known by the name of Hattori Rittetsu at the time.)

It's interesting going through it with KataGo, and comparing the AI's suggested moves with Matthew Macfadyen's analysis.

Hoshi 星 new update.

Hi mates,

There’s a new version of Hoshi 星, and it adds a module for studying and reviewing your games.

It’s still in beta. What I wanted was a way to keep what I was thinking during a game, not only the moves. Too often I’d open a game the next day and have no idea why I played something. So now you can press S at any point (even during an OGS game) and pin the moment:

  • Pins: mark a move as a mistake, good move, question, key moment, joseki, life and death or lesson, with a short note about your intention or doubt at that moment.
  • Drawings: arrows, areas, circles, letters and numbered ā€œwhat ifā€ lines, without touching the game.
  • Sharing: save the study as an SGF and send it to a friend or teacher. They can reply to your notes and send it back, and Hoshi merges everything move by move. Other programs like Sabaki still see it as normal comments.
  • ā€œWhat would you play?ā€: a small quiz built from your own pins, so you face those positions again later.
  • Game report: a printable page with every pinned moment, your notes and, after the game, KataGo’s opinion.

On OGS it stays fair: during a live game it’s notes and drawings only, with no engine and no quiz, and drawing never sends a move.

It’s free and open source. Since it’s still early, I’d really like to hear how it fits (or doesn’t fit) the way you review your games. Bug reports and ideas are very welcome.

You all can get more info on Hoshi — a Go board that feels every move feel free to add some feedback

P.S. Living in Cuba, where electricity is currently unavailable at my home, makes maintaining these projects a real challenge, on top of my work commitments. For now, I can only upload updates about once a week. Every bit of support, any feedback and any sharing means more than you know.

Senei's library enrty for drawing go or pen and paper go.

someone pointed out that the link used in this post just links to the home page and not the article. here is the proper link to the article as I can not edit the link directly. https://senseis.xmp.net/?DrawingGo

This article includes images that help explain concepts that might be hard to understand from the previous post and skips the basic rules of go that people here would not need to re learn. If anyone here is a member of sensei library and feels like commenting there feel free to do so but be mindful to leave you comments on the final header section.

Laundry Day again. So we played a game game rather than niche Atari Go.

How did we do scoring? The red dot is marking a stone I should not have placed because I believe it was neutral territory.

Still don't know who won. Haha
