Announcement Updated Community Rules for /r/capsulewardrobe

Okay, thanks to the community input from my post the other day, I have updated and refined our community rules and have included a new rule in regards to Artificial Intelligence usage in our sub.

So here are our updated rules as of June 2025

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rule #1 - No off topic, low-effort or spam content
Off topic, low-effort or any spam content is not allowed on the sub. This includes low-effort memes.

Rule #2 - Hateful rhetoric, bullying and/or harassment is not allowed
Disagreements or strong discussions are one thing but if we have a problem with harassment or other problematic behaviours, mods will step in.

Rule #3 - No affiliate links, sponsored content, or subscriber/follower farming.
Sharing what you love or what works for you is okay but don’t try to push an item/service on someone just so YOU can make money.

This rule also includes attempts to farm for followers, subscribers or karma.

Rule #4 - No Doxxing or calls for mobbing across communities
Not only is this a sitewide rule, but it's highly fucked up and will not be tolerated.

Rule #5 - No Artificial Intelligence
AI content (meaning AI generated photos, posts and services) are NOT allowed on the sub.

Beyond losing the human to human element of our community and the fact that AI encourages the elimination of human creativity, AI content and services are a massive drain on our environment and creates a large amount of CO2 usage and e-waste.

Rule #6 - No App posts

No, you cannot advertise your new app, or fish for testers, or ask if it's something people want. Marketing for your app or it's upcoming launch is not allowed on the sub.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks again to everyone for giving you opinions and thoughts in regards to the updated rules, I appreciate our community and encourage you to continue growing our corner of the internet.
-Jumer

Whereforth art thou, Mods?

Okay y'all, it's time. I've been the only mod for the entirety of our subreddit's history, I have loved watching us grow and I love our amazing community. But as we are approaching 200,000 members, I think it's time we add more mods.

So this is a call out for anyone who wants to volunteer, I'm looking to add two or three mods to the roster, so feel free to send a modmail to let me know if you would like to volunteer. Let me know if you have any modding experience, or if you are adept at setting up the auto mod functions, because I am completely out of my depth with that part of the mod system and that's a big hurdle I'd like to tackle this year to combat bots and spam.

Thank you again for this stellar community, we have done a great job being self-sufficient and giving plenty of amazing advice without compromising community standards.

I look forward to adding some mods to our community and I hope y'all welcome them during the transition of integrating them in!

Jumer 🧡

Fall/Winter What are the practical options if I want to avoid polyester consumption?

Everything, literally everything I see on brands is polyester and 95% of times it’s 100% polyester. I do not want to spend a lot of money just to get polyester.

I was wondering if I should get cloths from a thrift store or from someone who’s trying to get rid of their wardrobe. Even if it’s polyester it’s gonna give same already existing cloths a new life and price will be significantly lower than what I’m getting at H&M or ZARA or Mango.
I think already existing used cloths should be used first before getting more.
If it’s not polyester that’s excellent. How do I figure out blend at a thrift store? Most of the times it doesn’t look polyester but is polyester.

Questions What are your core colors?

Just curious what everyone's 3 core colors are?

Im a brown eyed, olive skin brunette so I prefer warm colors - and not a fan of cool tones on me.

My core 3 are black, navy & gray. I accent with white & red/wine tones. Yellows & greens look hideous on me so I avoid. Brown looks good on me but I don't like Brown so I never wear it.

Solid or Patterned Coat?

I'm on the warm color scale. My core colors are Black, Navy & Dark Gray. I accent with white, wine/red or burnt orange. ( I avoid yellow, green & brown).

All my pants are those 3 different core solid colors. My tops are mostly solid but I do have a few patterns. My dresses are patterned with only a few solid. If I wear a scarf its always patterned.

Okay so I get 1 winter coat and its going to be a wool thigh length pea coat. I could always go with black that goes with everything. But thats so boring to me. I was thinking about houndstooth ( black & white pattern). I feel like it gives me a little spice. But I'm wondering if its going to clash with any of the already patterned items?

So solid or patterned coat? If I decide on solid Ill probably go with dark gray.

Do black tights work with an all-brown outfit?

Hi everyone! I'm trying to figure out the best way to style this brown polo/skirt combo. Do the black tights work with the monochrome brown, or should I swap them for beige/sheer tights instead?

Can anyone recommend a good quality sleeveless button down shirt?

I have one sleeveless button down, which I like for both work and personal use, but my problem with it is that the 100% polyester material makes me feel like I'm wearing a crunchy plastic shell.

I'm looking for a sleeveless button down shirt like these examples, but maybe in a cotton or natural fiber blend, so it doesn't feel so plasticky. The thing is, I need it to be machine washable/dryable and I need it to not need ironing after every wash. Does anyone have any specific shirt or brand recommendations, or could anyone give me pointers on the types of materials/material blends that might work for this?

Questions Wardrobe Support

Hi there! What is the best way to analyze your wardrobe? I have used a couple of the wardrobe apps mentioned on here. I think they provide a useful visual but I wish there was an extra feature that could create a summary of what it sees are patterns and tell me where the gaps are in my closet. I feel so stuck in this area. I've done entire wardrobe resets and wasted so much money only to end up with pieces I still dont feel great in.

Would a dark brown bag work with an all-black/gray wardrobe?

Thumbnail gallery
140 Upvotes

My everyday clothes are basically all black and gray. I find them really versatile, and when I buy bags, it's easy to just default to black.

Lately, I've started to feel like dark brown might be pretty versatile too, and it seems perfect for fall and winter. Right now, I'm looking at the Fabrique Marais Soft Boston in dark brown, and I feel like the warmer color might soften up my usual black and gray outfits a little?

But I'm still hesitating. Dark brown looks easy to style, but in practice, will it be as universally versatile as black?

For those of you whose wardrobes are mostly black and gray, how do you usually style a dark brown bag? Are there any unexpected color combinations worth trying?

How do you keep track of what clothes you own?

Just curious, how do you all keep track of the clothes you own and what you've worn? Spreadsheets, Notion, something else?

I tried Notion but couldn't keep up with it, and I still end up wearing the same few things every week while half my closet gets forgotten in the back. Does tracking actually help you wear more of what you own, or do you have other tricks for keeping outfits fresh? Would love any tips 😊

Perfect Pieces Looking for the almost perfect heels

Hey everyone. I (34f) a looking for the “perfect” pair of heels. I never and I mean never wear heels. I don’t really have formal events to go to so I’ve never found the perfect pair. I have a Christmas office party coming up and would like to purchase a pair that I would add to my capsule wardrobe. I’m in Canada so it needs to be a closed toe heel if I want to have one that is versatile. Im looking for comfortable, timeless, chic and obviously not too high. I often see Naturalizer as a rec but I honestly feel that some are probably comfortable but a bit outdated. TIA 😌

List of exactly where to shop for women's capsule pieces (as most items marketed to women are the worst):

Uniqlo (women's department and unisex items)

Various brands selling unisex t-shirts, joggers, and hoodies including Japanese cotton t-shirts

Industry Of All Nations

Polo Ralph Lauren

Levi's men's department (everything at Levi's is technically designed as unisex and the men's department is much better than the women's)

Columbia (their Tamiami shirts)

Questions A necklace that goes from morning workout to dinner without swapping exists?

I recently realized how difficult it is to put on the necklace I wear every day after I finish working out. It’s a staple of my daily routine I can’t leave the house without one so I keep a separate necklace for the gym and another for work. Since I’m currently conducting consultations from home, my necklace needs to be, at the very least, fabulous.

I just want to know if you have a safe option for a necklace I put on and dont think about again, same through all day long without worrying if It looks gross after sweating. Everything I've ried either goes dull after a few workouts or reads as gym jewelry.

Does it exist or am I asking too much from one piece?

Perfect Pieces Layering Turtlenecks that Don't Choke

I didn't know how else to title this post! I am on the hunt for thinner layering turtlenecks that don't choke you. I am looking for a neck that kind flops or puddles instead of laying stiff and upright. I have some from Madewell, but they quality is awful and they don't wash well. I used to own the tissue turtlenecks fron J.crew --not sure if they still exist. I can't do any form of wool. I also appreciate a length that is tuckable.

Questions Capsuling in a variable climate..

By which I mean, living in the UK!

Year round we endure every type of weather; biting cold, baking hot, windy, rainy, icy, mild, warm with a cold breeze, cold with warm sun..

I find the weather to be the main thing which makes narrowing my wardrobe down truly hard. My lifestyle is pretty all over the place as well, it can vary from trekking through muddy woodlands with my 3 year old, to wining and dining in smart restaurants with my partner.

I need so many different options for layering, such as different types of coat/jacket, depending on occasion and the weather. The main area which I find hard to narrow down is tops, as this is where I tend to add or remove layers depending on temperature, and I need a few of each to enable time to wash and dry in between wears.

I'd love to see/hear from others in similar climates to get inspiration! Do I just need to resolve to washing the same items more often..?

Travel Capsule First ever capsule!

Thumbnail gallery
65 Upvotes

Like the title says, trying my first capsule for an upcoming combined business/pleasure trip to Switzerland and Italy in late October / early November. I have learned so much from others capsules, so hopefully this is at least a starting place for me! The travel will include 4 days at a conference, 1 day hiking, 1 day in wine country, 2 city sightseeing days, and 2 more business meeting days. The conference will be fairly formal for 3 days (one more casual) and the other business days I could be more casual, but figured I would re-wear my conference clothes.

The packing list:
- light pink blouse
- cowl neck blouse
- chocolate brown cardigan
- cream silk button up
- light blue cashmere sweater
- cream ribbed top
- pale yellow sweater
- straight leg jeans
- hiking pants
- brown houndstooth trousers
- grey checked trousers
- navy slacks
- wide leg lightweight sweatpants
- navy suit jacket (accidentally shown twice)
- long navy rain coat
- puffy layer for hiking
- sage green jacket
- blue purse (added to my casual / personal day outfits, other than the hiking day)
- brown loafers
- tan waterproof sneakers

Not pictured: I will also bring a hat, sunglasses, brown belt, and light gloves.

3 pairs of ‘work’ pants feels like a lot, with only one pair of jeans/casual bottoms, and hiking pants. However I’m not sure I would be OK at the conference with less, I will be interacting with similar groups all days.

The green jacket and brown cardigan are only on my outfits a few times, but I figure these will get worn more on evenings after the conference is over when I want to change out of the blazer.

Anything you would change? Ways to reduce this down? I haven’t tried packing this all yet, but prefer to only have a carry-on and personal item.

Apps and Tools Are digital closets/organizers a thing?

I'm trying to build a capsule wardrobe but I feel like the first step is actually figuring out what I already own!! I swear there has to be an ap or website or something where you can upload your clothes, organize everything, and keep track of your wardrobe.

Has anyone used something like this? I'd love recommendations that are actually worth using!

Travel dress brands that hold up across multiple occasions in one trip?

I have a 5 day trip coming up with several events, including a rehearsal dinner, a wedding, and a couple of nice dinners. I want to pack as few dresses as possible, so I’m looking for brands with reliable sizing that I can order online without worrying about returns taking too long before the trip. Adjustable features would be a bonus. Which brands do you trust for multi-event trips where you want to keep your wardrobe minimal?
