Five-month-old kitten “Mae West” underwent rigorous training in Georgia before being fitted with a special harness and chute to become a para-cat. In 1954, she made an impressive 37 jumps from a plane. Interestingly, the British military actually deployed para-cats in Malaysia. They dropped “Ginger” and “Sambo” in crates to a rodent-infested garrison in the jungle. After their ship was sunk in 1942, these sailors received new clothes from the relief organization Bundles for Britain. To express their gratitude, they enrolled their mascot Charleston in the affiliated group Kittens for Britain. Kittens could show their support for the war effort and receive a special collar bell by paying a nominal fee of 50 cents.
