Awesome man! May I ask you what is your top 3 must read?

Keep in mind I’ve read maybe 5% of my overall collection. So far, my top 3 in no particular order are planet hulk (I’m not a hulk fan yet I loved this and probably as a direct result went on to get the ww hulk and hulk by David omnis), Gotham central and Baltimore (can’t wait for the second omnibus coming out next week). I imagine this will change pretty quick though. Currently reading the fade out by brubaker and loving it.

In all seriousness... why?

What keeps you buying without reading? It’s got to be a tonne of money and I do appreciate that sometimes you pick stuff up while it’s available and in print.

Not to be a gatekeeper and to be fair my anti-library is growing all the time but 95% unread seems like a huge commitment that your along time from the pay off for.

I guess I’m just curious how you got here and how you feel about your investment / hobby?

It is a spectacular collection though and am definitely just envious.

I agree with what you’re saying. I admit I have the addictive type of personality and I definitely got carried away. This is hoarding to an extent for sure. I got started at the beginning of last year. I’ve only bought stuff I mean to read so I will read all of it eventually. If I could do it over I would definitely have taken it much slower. You’re right though that a lot of this stuff does go OOP fast and you have to jump on a lot of it but that doesn’t excuse how much I’ve accumulated. It’s admittedly excessive. I’ll be the first one to own that. I plan on cutting it down eventually. My comic collection is a little over 700 books and I would like to take it down to about 500 eventually but that’s hard to do with so much stuff coming out.

It definitely seems like as good a time as ever to be a collector. I was somewhat shocked how easily I could find even OOP stuff in Australia if I was willing to pay for it.

I guess I just hope your getting out what you point in and that your hobby is sustainable. Comicbookshelves as definitely inspired me AND increased my spend. I guess I’m just trying to keep some perspective for the newer collectors that it’s a journey and I want to hear the stories as much as I want to ogle everyone’s shelves :)

I try to avoid paying above cover whenever possible. A lot of omnis I got for $35-40 that retail for $125 by looking at damaged/nick and dent sections on sites like CGN and IST. Anything I read and don’t love, I will probably sell or trade. For example, just read punisher back to the war and traded it after I was done reading. Good thing is I can resell and at least get my money back on most of the stuff I bought so that helps in case I decide to let go of it down the line.

That’s pretty smart. I’d love to have access to the wider community that comes from living in the US. The bargain hunting part would really enjoyable.

The comicswap sub on here is good. Facebook has the omnibuds cafe and omnibus collectors group I believe which often has really good deals from what I’ve heard. I wouldn’t know as I deleted my Facebook account a couple years back. I’ve just been very patient on eBay eventually you get some damn good deals. I’ve made a killing on quite a few because the seller doesn’t know to price accurately.

Huge collection!

I have two other shelves out in the hallway with my DC omnis. I’ve posted those before. Even after getting these monstrosities, I still have some stuff waiting to be shelved. Still need to do a bit more organizing but finally have most of the stuff put up.

SOMEBODY GET THIS MAN FANTASTIC FOUR BY HICKMAN VOL 1

2

u/nab432 Mar 07 '20

Lol. I have the fantastic four complete collection vol 1 and 2. The Omni is just too expensive right now. I’ll wait for the reprint unless I find a good deal.

1

u/GonzoNawak Mar 06 '20

If you liked MONSTER you should definitively checked Pluto and 20th Century Boys!!!! Amazing collection I envy you your Hickman's Avengers

1

u/nab432 Mar 06 '20

Thanks for the recommendations. I’ll definitely have to check these out, especially 20th century boys as it sounds very interesting. I only have two manga series so very new to it. Kenshin I got because I loved the anime and monster I’ve heard great things. Looking forward to reading both soon.

1

u/GonzoNawak Mar 06 '20

They are by the same author and are both really really good!

If you like samourai stories, I can only suggest you the best samourai manga ever made: Vagabond. The art and the story are just amazing!

1

u/nab432 Mar 06 '20

Yeah I’ve heard of vagabond that’s definitely on my want list. I just have no room at the moment unfortunately or the money lol.

u/jibbleschmitt Mar 06 '20

Awesome! How is this sorted/organized?

1

u/nab432 Mar 06 '20

The left bookshelf is mostly random. Haven’t had a chance to organize it much. The bottom shelves in each bookshelf are for my marvel Omni collection. Middle top shelf is image. The top shelves on the right are marvel trades (complete collections, epics, etc). I will keep organizing. I still have another bookshelf I need to make room for.

Fall of the Mutants and Bishops Crossing are two of my white whales!

1

u/nab432 Mar 07 '20

Yeah I got good deals on those. I sold off UXM Omni Vol 1-3 by Claremont and 1-2 by Claremont and Lee. Will get the reprints for sure. Also had phalanx covenant but traded it for tomb of dracula 2. Need inferno as well but that goes for crazy money and I can’t justify paying five times cover price.

1

u/09-11-2001 Mar 07 '20

Lucky to have bought phalanx off the shelf for $48 or so. Zero tolerance, fatal attractions, and inferno prologue are starting to hit triple digits now. I'd jump on Fall and Inferno for cover at this point but yeah I can't justify over $120 even as much as $200. Even Bishop is going regularly for $90, would love one for cover at this point. Ah well, the thrill of the hunt!

1

u/nab432 Mar 07 '20

Inferno is going for $300+ on eBay which is just insane. Can’t believe people are paying that much. I actually got phalanx covenant for $50 on eBay by luck but had to trade it.

1

u/09-11-2001 Mar 07 '20

I think there's one listed for $200 obo but that's still too much. I offered 140 and he declined but that's still a stretch for me.

1

u/nab432 Mar 07 '20

You must be talking about inferno prologue. Inferno never goes for $200 on eBay at least not that I’ve seen.

1

u/09-11-2001 Mar 07 '20

1

u/nab432 Mar 07 '20

Oh yeah I saw this guy had it listed for $250 before but I guess he’s dropped it now. That’s about as low as I’ve seen but yeah I agree with you even at $200 I can’t really justify it.

1

u/09-11-2001 Mar 07 '20

I know! I was almost relieved he rejected my low ball. That's the paradox of collecting these things, you know it's a really good deal, but it's just way too much still

2

u/nab432 Mar 07 '20

Yeah tell me about it man. I paid $100 for death of Captain America which is actually a great deal based on what it goes for but I hated paying even that because I can’t stand paying above cover. I hate it and avoid doing that whenever possible.

3rd shelf up in the middle: What's the Omnibus just labelled "SPIDER MAN"?

2

u/nab432 Mar 10 '20

That’s the Spider-Man by Roger Stern omni
