Shelfie Had to build the shelves after moving into new place, but here’s my collection.

Real nice set up. What’s that blue deadly class book one?
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
It’s the DCBS variant of vol. 1. It’s actually the only uncracked book I have as it’s a gift for a friend :)
2
u/BleueBlancRed May 18 '20
Yeah I thought that right after posting. I think you almost have all my books. Good taste.
3
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Oh man, that comment made me go through your posts looking for your shelves, and after seeing your posts of hauls I very much want to see the whole enchilada now.
2
u/BleueBlancRed May 18 '20
Lol it’s been a year since I started collecting and gave up a lot of bad habits like smoking while my income more than doubled so I’m fortunate. I wanted some custom shelves to celebrate my first year of collecting but it’s corona time. Will post shelfies once I get em set up. I got two different shelves and the rest of my books are all over the place.
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Lol nice. This is my first time having them all in one spot presentable, and its introduced a new problem to me of not wanting to touch it thus defeating its purpose.
1
u/BleueBlancRed May 18 '20
Just mess with 2-3 books at a time and put one back every time you bring out a book. Rotate the ones you have out. The major problem will be room. You will have to upgrade some deluxe collections to omnibus to save space.
Edit: well eventually but that’s future problems.
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
OHC > Omni IMO, I’ll have to build another wall then cause the reading experience with Omnis is less than enjoyable.
Oh I meant I didn’t want to disturb the shelves, for some inane reason.
1
u/BleueBlancRed May 18 '20
I honestly feel the same when it comes to reading. So much easier to read the OHC but then the omni comes out and the FOMO kicks in lmao

Impressive collection! If you ever want to talk comics join is here: https://discord.gg/ytUQkN

So good! If I was in your shoes I’d look at getting a couple of graded single issues or maybe commission my favourite artist for a piece to put on the pillar.
What is you favourite book to read? And which is your favourite collected edition? (Print quality, book build, design etc.)
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I mentioned it above in a comment, but I was blown away by the creativity and style of this redditors display. I’d love to do something like that.
I considered graded books but something about them always looks off to me.
Best read is a challenge and I have to cheat. Saga, Hawkeye, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Ms Marvel, Low, and Snyder’s Batman, Young Avengers v2, Gillens JiM and Ewing’s Loki: Agent are all amazing, it really depends on my mood. I often go back to Hawkeye though, so it may be my favorite of the bunch
Best book in collected form is easy, the Low Deluxe edition by Remender and Tocchini is the best looking book I’ve ever seen, and made me question my understanding of what was possible in print.

Awesome collection! My suggestion is a really nice piece of comic book art for your wall. I’ve seen some really cool pieces here.
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Thanks for the suggestion and the link! I’d never heard of sideshow before so down the rabbithole I go!

u/desire_in_disguise Batman May 18 '20
DO NOT CHECK OUT THEIR PREMIUM FORMAT FIGURES
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I’ve never been a fan of figures for some reason so kind of scoffed at the comment and then stumbled across the Miles and yeah, I’m noping out of here before I don’t have a savings account.

u/jarred_98 Omnibus May 18 '20
Love the collection but I hope it’s just the camera angle and that the shelves are not actually warping

u/Jklever716 May 18 '20
Awesome collection. What wall brackets did you use? Is the shelf deep enough for Absolute editions?
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I actually used black iron pipe that I spraypainted white to try and blend. My shelves are only 8” as I needed access to my closet next to the wall, but you could fairly easily expand it to 12” I imagine.

u/RobinhoodBP May 18 '20
That is sick! I’m envious of everything left of the pillar!!!! Rediculous collection!

u/MattTheWebhead May 18 '20
Really cool! Would you mind making a closer shot of the upper spidey hardcovers? :D
3
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Sure thing!
There are a few more Spider-Man mixed throughout, but that’s the bulk of it.
1
u/MattTheWebhead May 19 '20
Wait, i didnt know that there are OHC from superior Spider-man. Google acts like there isn't even a Vol 1 wtf
2
u/horsehorse May 19 '20
There’s 3! Vol 1 is the easiest to find and has a variant print.
1
u/MattTheWebhead May 20 '20
Cant seem to find those 3... even if i google "superior spider-man OHC" i only get the complete collection 1 and 2
1
u/horsehorse May 20 '20
Typically when you see complete collection, that means trade paperback with Marvel.
Wikipedia article has the ISBNs under collected editions
Vol 1: 978-0785185215
Vol 2: 978-0785154488
Vol 3: 978-0785193951
1
u/horsehorse May 20 '20
I read your message again and I think I understand now, sorry. The out of print stuff is typically super hard to find from Marvel, and when googling you’ll have better luck just doing “superior spider-man hardcover vol X” and filtering it from there as most places don’t use the OHC acronym. There’s folks over on r/comicswap that seem to sell them quite regularly, though you’ll likely pay a premium until Marvel decides to reprint them.
I do accidentally have an extra superior foes Omni somehow.
2
u/horsehorse May 19 '20
When I started migrating to OHCs, I think I ran into the same problem as most in that there doesn’t seem to an authoritative list of publications. The closest I was able to find was here and I used it as a reference point repeatedly.
1
u/InanimateCarbonRodAu May 18 '20
This a really nice way to shelf...
But one question... have you heard of this company DC Comics?
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Hah, there’s give or take ~150 books on shelves, of which around 20 of them are DC and/or Vertigo! You may notice that almost everything is newer as well, very few books collecting material from 90s and before. That’s intentional
1
u/InanimateCarbonRodAu May 18 '20
Hehe, just teasing and I must admit Marvel really have a consistent look and feel for there trades that makes a large collection like this really pop.
DC just seems like it can’t stick a consistent trade dress. I had a closer look and finally spotted the couple of “Dc Proper” books... I wouldn’t really call most of the vertigo ones “dc”, stuff like Y the last man is a creator owned comic that just happens to be published by a dc imprint.
You really have an amazing collection and you’ve really maximized how you’ve displayed it.
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I actually hadn’t considered the style when collecting the volumes until I reached the point where I took stock and recognized I had a problem and needed to build Trumps wall to hold my collection. My only criteria for it was OHC sized at minimum for height.
Important caveat is a rule I created for myself when I got into comics is I won’t own anything older than I am, and that includes collections of books from before my time (for reference, 1985)
I know it’s preference but there seem to be very few books from the DC imprint proper that I enjoyed enough to keep in the timeframe.
1
u/InanimateCarbonRodAu May 18 '20
That’s an interesting rule and one I would find challenging. I couldn’t imagine not owning say Marvel origins from the 60s / 70s.
But man... I can understand the need to set limits. I’d buy a lot of stuff just because I think it’s worth owning. My biggest factor is to try and pick the books I’ll revisit again and again. I read a lot of stuff digitally, so my physical collection is the stuff I want the most or I want to lend people.
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
It’s one I created back when I was collecting single issues primarily. I have a fairly strong case of adhd and found that if the sky is the limit I get lost in possibilities but with even a hint of a framework I can easily operate and prioritize.
Another reason is I think of these books like I do cinema, in that rarely do they age well. There are obviously outliers to the rule, but overall I rarely watch anything from the 90s and before because whatever message or style that was unique to them has become foundational and expanded on in newer works.
1
u/InanimateCarbonRodAu May 18 '20
Yeah. Sturgeon’s law, 90% of everything is crap... but the classic, classic for a reason :)
I think that’s what I’m enjoying most about this community it’s just seeing all the different things people value and the different things that drive their collection. It’s very cool and there is such a wide range of collectors and tastes here from beginners to old hats. From the obsessive to the excessive to the casual.
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Completely unrelated to the content of the message, but anytime someone references an adage, I immediately think of one I first discovered on reddit years ago, Cunningham’s law.
The best way to get an answer on the internet isn’t to ask the question, but to answer the question wrong.
Back to content though, Absolutely one of the best parts has been exposure into what others prioritize and maybe why, even when it doesn’t impact me in the slightest I love seeing it.
1
u/InanimateCarbonRodAu May 18 '20
Definitely and I’ve already grabbed a couple of things I’d never checked out. East of West and the IDW Turtles which I’m smashing through.
1
u/NoTompsChumpsie May 18 '20
Those Daredevil HCs are way out of print these days, excellent taste. I’ve only got the first one.
2
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I actually found that once it came out in Omni, prices for the OHCs came down substantially and allowed me to find the rest. I prefer the OHC as as a reading format anyway so if I fall asleep in a book I haven’t given myself brain damage
1
u/noobmaster2419 May 18 '20
Love it! Nice to see so man front facing books instead of rows of spines...looks great.
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Thanks! Initially was just intended to occupy some space but now cannot see myself going back

This is beautiful! So clean, so well set up! Ugh I can't gush over this enough! Great job
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
Thanks! Super appreciate the sentiment, wasn’t sure how the color scheme would work initially but decided eh, worst that happens is a repaint (totally had to repaint the top white as initial concept painted it blue)
1
u/Justegarde May 18 '20
Very clean. Did you use drywall anchors for the mounting brackets?
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I ended up having to use toggle bolts after discovering it was metal beams for studs.
1
May 18 '20
You should put some poster on that divide. What's with the random wall anyway? Support beam?
1
u/horsehorse May 18 '20
I actually haven’t been able to determine what’s there. Whatever it is it’s not easy found.

u/horsehorse May 18 '20
It’s been a work in progress for awhile now and I finally have it in a place I’m comfortable sharing.
Tossing some ideas around on how to decorate the pillar more, suggestions welcome!
