Racists are often “nice” to black people they are strange to, at least to their face. Someone being civil, or nice, or even kind does not exclude them from being hateful. Many of the most racist people you’ll ever run into have a black friend who is, behind closed doors, “one of the good ones.”

Exactly. He was nice to the cashier because she was a blonde-hair blue-eyed white woman.
Same way how so many stories on AITA are a man defending another man’s blatantly sexist behavior by saying “He’s always been nice to me”
