I had a recent business trip and had 2 laptops and an e-reader in my backpack. At security, there was first a person saying electronics stay in bags, and then at the belt I was told they all had to come out. They don't even know the rules at the same checkpoint.

Different lines have different rules even. I was at an airport last month where the guy in one line was saying "leave electronics in bag" and next line over guy was saying "take electronics out".

Tbf some of that might have to do with the actual tech. On the same line is ridiculous though.

Many airports are rolling out new advanced x-ray machines, which allow you to leave your electronics in the bag. So you can end up with one line having the new machines and the line next to it the old machines and thus the old rule.

It was like that for about a year in my local airport, all the regular travellers knew to head to the far left line to get the new machines that you didn’t have to take your electronics out for. They have now replaced all the machines.

The rule is that whatever you did is the wrong thing to do.

This happens everywhere people get authority. Like when there was a guy at the security check at FRA who dedicated his day to chastising people for having their passport in their hand. "This is security, not immigration".

Not even 3 minutes later we get to the gate and have to present passports. Thanks, man. That was really helpful.

It depends on the scanner you have at your line. New ones don't need electronics to be taken out, older do.
