To be fair every local in every place I've lived in America hates tourists too. The difference is those tourists are just Americans from different states.

Oh sure, it was just funny to watch Europeans pivot from "you Americans are so ignorant, you need to leave your country now and then" to "stop coming to our continent" with barely a pause in between.

Has there been protests over tourism in America, never heard of it

Yes. Most recently there was a protest about a month ago in Kalaupapa National Historical Park in Hawaii.

I've also seen smaller communities protest local festivals that became "too big" until the local government shuts it down. Ocktoberfest in Savannah, for example. Although there was some racist elements involved in that too (i.e. they wanted to ban the black vendors but couldn't, but publicly they claimed it was because of over-tourism).

I've mostly seen that happen with unofficial block party type events that were ruined by everyone inviting their out-of-town friends on social media. Floatopia in Isla Vista, CA comes to mind; it took place on a small strip of beach with basically no facilities or infrastructure to handle large numbers of people.

Bluffton SC was the weirdest for this. The city was considered a resort town even before the Civil War, but they hated the tourists so much despite it being their entire economy...
