Interesting. How would you describe the differences?

American ranch is a buttermilk and mayo base with high notes of dill and other herbs. Very creamy and thick and herby. UK ranch is much more zippy and vinegar forward and sort of... less savory? Hard to put my finger on, haha. Are you in the UK? I would totally mail you a packet of the powder to make and do a comparison!

Nah, I'm in the US and am very familiar with American ranch. Not so much the UK style

I look forward to the "How one man ended up sending half of the UK ranch dressing packets" news story

Wow am I missing out on American ranch?

14

u/VelvettedFox Aug 12 '26

It's not my favorite but a lot of people do really love it! Happy to send you a packet if you want to see how it compares. You mix it with mayo and milk for a dressing or you can mix it with a tub of sour cream for a dip that can only be eaten with Ruffles chips lol.

can only be eaten with Ruffles chips

Important detail.

u/stealingyourpixels Aug 12 '26

hey that would be cool! cheers

Ruffles are the worst kind of chip. Kettle are supreme

9

u/Urag-gro_Shub Aug 12 '26

You'll break all your chips in the dip though. That's why there's ridges in the ruffles. I'll agree the kettle chips are better for snacking by themselves.

u/Elegant-Cheekz-2141 Aug 12 '26

Dude what?? Kettle chips are SOLID and perfect for dipping, too! Only normal shitty chips break easily. Or shitty kettle chips maybe. Cape Cod and Kettle brand are both legit

6

u/SharkAttackOmNom Aug 12 '26

It’s a corrugated chip, man! That’s like an engineered material in snack form!

1

u/Elegant-Cheekz-2141 Aug 12 '26

It's too much for me. Worst texture of a chip, and they seem to get stale faster than other kinds

edit: according to google, yep they do! more surface area (duh, me! shoulda thought about that one) so they're doomed when it's humid

You can also use it to season your chicken.

Idk if id say missing out, but its a great way to down a pack of baby carrots without realizing you've eaten the whole pack...

Mostly you're really missing out on american restaurant ranch. Runny ranch as some people call it. Don't get me wrong I like shelf stable bottled poison ranch too, but house made ranch is just something else.

I'm hearing potentially much better with chips and kebabs probably? Maybe lacking or just potentially different on pizza?

4

u/VelvettedFox Aug 12 '26

Ngl I am not a ranch person lol. It's definitely something that goes with a lot of fried food (fries, onion rings, fried pickles, chicken nuggets etc.) and A LOT of people love it with their pizza. When I was growing up there wasn't a party that didn't have a big veggie tray with ranch dressing in the center for dipping.

All of that said I actually think it would be really disgusting with kebab but that could be the Persian in me. There's 100% some American out there who loves ranch on their kebab. I shudder to think.

u/Parking_Equipment427 Aug 12 '26

Ranch on kebab is not that great. Ranch on Schawarma on the other hand, that's pretty legit. The main flavor of ranch is supposed to be garlic and herbs, and it goes with the pickles, the lettuce, the tomatoes. I am not saying it is my favorite shawarma sauce, but it fits the flavour profile, especially with chicken, and it can be very good.

Hot take, and I apologize for this ahead of time because I really do love Persian food so much, that ranch might be my favorite thing to pair with falafel.

I found your comment that was removed to be hilarious. What word do you think alerted the auto mod anyways? Maybe djinn?

2

u/VelvettedFox Aug 13 '26

If they've got an automod for "djinn" I would die laughing! Probably they thought I was actually being a jerk and removed it? I really don't know, haha! In hindsight it also just could have been the use of the "f" word, who knows.

sounds like UK ranch uses salad cream in its base vs mayonnaise.

well that's just fuckin weird.

1

u/Prestigious_Ask_7058 Aug 11 '26

That sounds better than American actually

2

u/VelvettedFox Aug 12 '26

It's like if you had a tart salad dressing and thought, "did someone sprinkle a tiny pinch of ranch on this?" I don't care for either version though so don't take it from me, haha.

2

u/Prestigious_Ask_7058 Aug 12 '26

I despise both ranch and mayonnaise to be fair

0

u/Parking_Equipment427 Aug 12 '26

This sounds like the UK version doesn't have any MSG. Ranch dressing, at its conception, has a nice amount of msg in it. There are different brands that iterated on the OG that may not have any, and it simply won't be the same (it probably isn't going to taste as good either)

2

u/AnAverageTransGirl Aug 12 '26

Every brand of ranch I've been able to find since moving to Australia is more comparable to tartar sauce. Hidden Valley and anything else in that vein of flavor palette is very much a US thing.

2

u/ShareTheSameSky Aug 12 '26

I had “American Ranch” in a Finnish restaurant and it was pretty damn close to Tzatziki, with maybe a little bit more mayo. It just had waaaaay too much dill

2

u/ItsTheDCVR Aug 12 '26

The "Ranch" flavor in Finland is, as you can see... not at all Ranch flavor. It's flavored like what the concept of an American ranch looks like in media being consumed on the other side of the planet. Which, apparently, is tomato, cheese, and pepper.

It's quite good! It's just not ranch lol

Probably in English idk
