I've been to Europe, and not only is it fantastically expensive, you're looking at appx 18 hours of travel door-to-door, so it's not like you can nip over for a long weekend (as a point of reference, London and Paris are significantly closer together than LA and San Francisco)

Just having been to Europe, again, I wish it were only 18 hours door to door from here. That seems like almost short haul. It is far more than 18 hours flight time. We factor in that it takes up the best part of 2 days to get there by the time you get to and from the airports, the time in the airports and the time for the stopover. Kiwis have it worse than us. We are flying to Korea and Japan in a few months and I do look at that as a nice short flight, only about 10 hours and therefore no need to try to sleep on the plane.
