This exact reason is why I don't use those kinds of terms. I use what we call "islander slang" from where I grew up.
Mostly gender neutral terms that show gratitude or friendship with the only exception being "dude" but I usually save that for people I know.
When in doubt use plain speak. A simple thank you, you're welcome, appreciate it, etc will go far enough
