My girlfriend and I have had this conversation. Though I was clear to talk with her before we moved in together.
I explained it was just for recreational target shooting from nearly ten hears ago, and its left its locked case maybe 3 times since i moved out from my parents place, and it wasn’t even used then.w
We’ve had the conversation on what if we needed it for self protection. Especially with everything going on. Right now we’re settled enough with a baseball bat and a sword should anyone try and force entry to our bedroom. We’re fortunate to not be in a super targeted area, but id be lying if i said i wasn’t tempted to get myself familiar with it again incase our area gets targeted again.
No, no, and kinda. The bat would be better for sure. But it looks cool which is the only reason i own it. Its closer to a camping machete than a real sword.
Admittedly, it's been a while since I've used a machete for its intended purpose but I don't recall them requiring all that more space to properly use than a baseball bat.
As for the effectiveness of a machete as a weapon, well, they have a pretty extensive butcher's bill out there in the wild. Although, admittedly, I think most of those occurred out of doors rather than in hallways or apartments.
Just so you know, a cutlass/sabre is not a great tool for home defence! It may be scary, but if push comes to shove and you actually need to start swinging it around you’re more likely to hit a wall, furniture or the ceiling fan than your target (especially without training, which I assume you don’t have… there aren’t many fencing manuals for colonial-era officer weapons floating around these days). Get a straight sword with a sharpened point, preferably one that’s not too long. The cutting edge is optional — what you want is something that you can stab someone with. Arming swords (one-handed, two-edged medieval-era side-arms)/sideswords (late-medieval/early-Renaissance precursor to the rapier) are perfect for this, but even something like a smallsword or messer would be better than what you currently have.
Oh I definitely agree. Outside of being an big and loud the saber like blade would not do me much good.
Closest I have to training are books, and an ever so brief stint in intro to boxing, so you got me there. Though I did a fair bit of stance training.
Though I would absolutely love to get some more swords at some point, Money's in a strange spot at the moment. Between my size and almost passable stances the bat shall have to do. However, a sword and some partial armor kit would really send a message to anyone having ill intentions.
"Oh shit a crazy dude lives here, none of this is worth it"
