Ah yes, "the evil antagonist was just getting ready for an eviler antagonist so everything is justified". That trope is almost always stupid.

More than stupid, really, since it’s essentially how fascist/authoritarian regimes justify themselves in real life.

It wasn't just an idea someone came up with.

It was explicitly written into the pre-Disney expanded universe, with Thrawn being the guy that warned Palpatine about the Yuuzhan Vong.

So stupid trope, but in this case it has to be blamed on the content creators, not the fans.

Oh yes I heard, but using old EU to tell your coworkers the fascists were the good guys is... a choice.

It also doesn’t exactly match up either. Palps is still absolutely, unquestionably evil in the EU. The unifying against the Yuuzhan Vong theme seems to be a conflation between Palpatine and what we hear about Revan’s motives in KOTOR 2 (that Revan was trying to unite the galaxy against the actual Sith Empire in the Unknown Regions). Palps knew about the Vong (ish), but they weren’t enough on his radar to worry about.
