Just had a big ol "oh, duh" moment.

But what about couples? I've been with my wife for nearly eighteen years now, and still would rather not watch her use the bathroom. Same with me, I need privacy.

I used to think it was because they expect a mostly kinky clientele.

Now I’ve stayed at enough “fancy” hotels to no longer believe they think.

That's what I thought too! But the "so friends don't share a room" makes a lot more sense.

True, but I offer you this counterpoint:

One of the hotels I stayed at, in Xi’an, China, had the window specifically situated to look from the single king bed into the little nook with the toilet, and not into the large sauna-style shower and bath tub. A bathtub which had a big plastic bag stretched over it that they explained should be filled instead of the porcelain bowl of the tub (If you’re picturing a bathtub condom… yes, that).

This was a single room, with the same fittings as their doubles. This leads me to surmise either kinky or crazy… Their dining room smelled cloyingly of mid rose-scented perfume and had a Little Shop of Horrors-esquire flower display in one corner, so I’m going with the crazy option
