Hey everyone!
I'm a 22-year-old guy with curly hair, and I've been struggling with a few things for a while now.
For context, I've been growing my hair out since 2022, with only occasional trims (roughly once a year). My hair is over 20 cm when stretched.
I'm also a working student living in a dorm, so I don't always have the time, money, or energy for complicated wash days. Anyone with tighter curls probably knows how time-consuming washing, detangling, conditioning, and styling can be. Not to mention how ridiculously expensive curly hair products get when you're constantly replacing them.
My current routine:
I wash my hair once a week, although I only use shampoo every other week.
My usual wash day looks like this:
Shampoo (every two weeks)
Conditioner and detangling
Deep conditioning mask for at least 45 minutes
Rinse, followed by leave-in conditioner
Twisting butter to style and define my curls, but i only use like a swipe of it
I also sleep with a satin bonnet. It helps protect my hair, but I wake up with insane shrinkage, and I struggle to maintain the volume and shape I had after styling.
The products I currently use:
Shampoo: SheaMoisture Manuka Honey & Yogurt Hydrate + Repair Shampoo
Conditioner: As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Conditioner
Leave-in conditioner: As I Am Dry & Itchy Scalp Care Leave-In, or Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk
Deep conditioning mask: Camille Rose Algae Renew Deep Conditioner
Styling product: Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter
The three Camille Rose products can be found here on their official website.
- Persistent scalp flaking, itching, and redness
This is by far my biggest frustration.
I get quite a lot of flaking around my hairline, sometimes with thick flakes that seem attached to my scalp. The area also becomes itchy and red, usually several days after washing.
Interestingly, the rest of my scalp doesn't seem nearly as affected.
I understand that shampooing only every two weeks might contribute to the problem. However, whenever I wash my hair more frequently, it tends to become extremely frizzy, dry, and difficult to manage.
So I feel stuck between having a relatively clean scalp but dry, frizzy hair, or having defined, moisturized curls but dealing with itching and flakes.
I've also tried oils and serums, but they haven't really helped with the drieness maybe even made it worse.
- My hair doesn't seem to be growing or retaining length as well as it shouldI haven't had a proper haircut since 2022, aside from trimming the ends approximately once a year.I understand that shrinkage makes growth harder to notice with 3C–4A hair, but considering how long I've been growing it, I honestly expected more length by now.I've seen people with similar curl patterns achieve considerably more visible length in just a year or two.I'm starting to wonder whether my problem is actually hair growth or simply poor length retention due to breakage, dryness, or improper care.
3.Another thing I've noticed is that my hair seems to be growing unevenly. The hair at the back of my head appears noticeably longer than the hair on the top and sides. I'm not sure whether this comes down to different curl patterns, shrinkage, breakage, or genuinely uneven growth.
I'm also not particularly impressed with my overall volume considering that I've been growing my hair for around four years. My hairline still looks relatively normal to me, so I'm hoping the Norwood Reaper hasn't come knocking just yet (copium), but I can't help wondering whether thinning could be involved.
A few things worth mentioning I live in Germany, somewhere where finding hairdressers experienced with my curl pattern is quite difficult. The local product selection is also limited, so I usually order my hair products online.
I'm not against changing my routine or purchasing better products, but ideally I'd like to keep things affordable and manageable. I really can't justify spending a fortune on products that run out every couple of weeks.
Sorry for the long post! I've mostly been figuring out how to care for my hair through trial and error, and I'm starting to question whether some of the things I've been doing are actually working against me.Any advice, personal experiences, or constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
