caught myself checking someone's profile before replying to them like i'm running a background check

someone replied to one of my comments yesterday, pretty normal reply, and before i answered i went and clicked their profile. scrolled back to see if they'd posted anything that wasn't in the same tone, checked how old the account was, looked for a single comment where they were annoyed about something stupid. found one where they were complaining about a bus being late and i went ok fine, you're a person, and then replied

the reply took me 30 seconds. the checking took about 5 minutes

i don't remember when i started doing this. it's not even like it would change much, i'd probably have answered either way. but it feels weird that "is this a human" is now a step before talking to someone

does anyone else do this or have i just been on here too long

Anyone else feel like Reddit has become little more than a bot farm hangout?

r/explainthejoke r/outoftheloop r/whatisit etc. are just fodder for AI training

this annoys the shit out of me (and feels weirdly nefarious), but all those subreddits (special shout out to r/PeterExplainsTheJoke) that feature:

  • a screenshotted instagram or twitter post asking a question or pointing out an oddity about something
  • the screenshotted instagram or twitter reply that's always "ThErE's A rEaSoN wHy AnD iT's ObViOuS" but never actually explains it
  • The reddit user then asking "Why Peter?" or some shit
  • A ream of comments explaining the "oddity" or niche thing

It's literally always the same structure, and I swear to god the whole thing (the original instagram post, the vague response to it, the follow-up reddit post) are just AI bot programs trying to learn nuance and building knowledge of niche topics. I think the only human element is the Reddit comments themselves, and even then half of those are probably other bots taking a stab at answering.

So yeah idk. If you're active in those communities I feel like you're probably just contributing to the finalization of the dead internet theory (if it's not already complete).

bleep bloop I'm not a bot btw (but that'd be funny)

why are redditors bots

okay so i wanna see a post where someone can just type freely like this not like “Your lack of immortal comprehension is what inhibits your ability to read” thinking that talking a specific way on text makes the other person look less educated lol when did people become so uptight you dam larps

are AI bots used as fake users in study room

I just started using a website called theta wave to study and I think it's great overall so far.

I have noticed a strange thing, sometimes, when you go in a study room you see "users" who have the same username as some you've seen before and how they talk, what they say, sometimes to even the exact same phrase, is similar. Even the description of what they're studying is the same. Honestly, It's a bit uncanny and I searched if it was ai bots, but havent found anything saying they could be ai bots.

I wanted to know if anyone knew something, are they really bots?

Or am I like going totally crazy ?

Thank you !

if it helps, here's the link to the web site :

(click the link, then press "go focus" to see the study rooms)

The scariest part isn't bots posting like humans. It's humans posting like bots.

Half the replies I see now are 'Great point!' 'This is so true!' 'Love this!' with nothing after it. Not bots, just people on autopilot, agreeing without saying anything. What's the comment style that makes you go 'yeah that's a person performing being a person'?

I got two bot posts from this sub on my feed earlier despite not being in it, turns out it's currently being spammed by repost bots.

Every single account deleted in this post: were they all just bots?

Stumbled on this and immediately thought of the people in this sub. I noticed these pictures that were screengrabbed from a previous submission video and clicked into it because, frankly, the images are cool. Scrolling down through the comments and responses, every single account that commented or replied has been deleted. So what the heck happened? Were they all just bots talking to bots, or by some freak of chance did they all delete their accounts at the same time?

Scrolling through reels last night. Saw a decently funny security cam video of a guy slipping down the stairs, scrolled a few more posts - oh! It's the exact same video, except the "person" has been replaced. So jarring.

How will next week look like for this entire app?

Recently got back on reddit out of boredom, its even worse than my last time which was about three months ago.

Its so strange, it just feels like in real time Im watching everything devolve on this screen. AI advertisements everywhere, AI bots posting seflies of fake women on suggested selfie subreddits they keep sending me for some reason. Politics month coming in, AI generated political ads. I think its over for us genuinely, for social media i mean

I tried to measure dead internet theory instead of arguing about it. Most people can't tell old human comments from AI ones

Disclosure: I made this, it's free, no sign-up, nothing sold.

Every thread here guesses what share of the internet is still people. I wanted a number instead of a vibe, so I built a small test: 10 short comments. Some are real comments from a tech forum written between 2010 and 2018, before AI could write. The rest were written this year by GPT-5.4 and Claude, asked to reply in the same thread in the same tone. Same punctuation on both sides, so dashes and quotes don't give it away.

You guess, and it shows the running totals: how often people get it right, and how often AI passes as human.

If text can't tell us who's real, the only test left is the physical one, so at the end there's a second part where people in a city meet up for 30 minutes to confirm each other in person. No names, no face scans. That part is optional.

Curious what scores this sub gets, and whether you think the test is fair.

What's the most obviously fake comment you've seen this week?

With all the talk about bot traffic dropping off, I keep noticing the ones that still slip through. Yesterday I saw 'Great point! This really resonates with me' under a photo of a sandwich. What's the most obvious bot comment you've caught lately?

I was scrolling through Instagram and saw that account. Since I knew it was a bot, I opened the profile to block it. The account was targeting an Argentinian audience but is based in Ukraine. It's possibly owned by illegal casinos or some other illicit business. It's the first time I've seen such a blatant bot (it's ironic that the bot is from Ukraine since they destroyed a Russian bot farm, but anyways) Edit: I also forgot to mention that it makes itself look like as a watch shop, for some reason

r/DeadInternetTheory • • 3d ago

Has anyone else notices a sharp decline in responses to their comments after the demise of the Russian data centers?

The bots are pretty convincing these days. Hard to tell the difference.

The new sign a comment is real isn't good grammar anymore, it's a typo

Used to be broken English gave the bots away. Now it's the opposite. Anything too clean, too balanced, ending in a tidy little summary, and I assume it's AI. A typo or a random tangent feels like proof of life. What's something you now trust *because* it's a bit messy?

Reddit now feeds AI, and AI now posts on Reddit. At what point is nobody here human anymore?

Half the comments on the front page read like the same bot wearing different hats. AI trains on Reddit, then floods Reddit, then trains on that. Genuine question: how do you all spot a real person now? What's your tell?

Should we get rid of bot accounts on Instagram, YouTube, etc.?

PR agencies, bots, fake engagement, and algorithms pushing content in the wrong direction are making it harder to know what’s actually genuine online.

How do we know if a product is really good or just being marketed to us through manufactured hype?

Are we slowly losing authenticity on social media, and is there any real way to fix it?

r/DeadInternetTheory • • 5d ago

Since bots are dominating the internet, the chronically online people are behaving like them too which makes it hard to point out the difference on social media.

I have seen trends being hyped and well, trending, because of bots online. I believe this is called artificial trends or something like that. Like the labubu and Dubai chocolate stuff, they came out of nowhere and the hype didn't make much sense at first, right? That's the artificial trend, the beginning of such things are difficult to find because there's a different version being told to us every time.

Not only that but people are behaving the same, talking the same way, dressing the same way and so on. Maybe we are talking to real people but since it's in human nature to mimic others' behaviors in order to adapt so many actual users feel AI-like to us. They may not use AI assistants for their homework, job or whatever but they engage in AI content so very often!! So they feel like AI, like a chatgpt or Gemini.

This is being passed on to IRL mundane conversations too. Similar humors, accents, manner of speech and even careless mistakes committed in daily activities are powered by AI. This isn't a post to make everyone paranoid of AI (even more than we already are), just an observation I've done in the past couple of months. It's a cycle of consuming AI and behaving like AI.
