Genetics/DNA We're Embark: AMA about our new Mast Cell Tumor Risk Score, now available for all dogs!

Hi all!

We're Embark's science and vet team, and we're here to talk about something we've been working on for a while: our updated Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) risk score.

What's new: Our previous MCT risk assessment could only flag elevated risk, and only for dogs with certain breed backgrounds. Now every dog with a Breed + Health test gets a percentage risk score plus a designation — below-average, average, or elevated. These new results can be found under "Genetic Risk Scores" in your dog's health results.

Why this matters: Mast cell tumors are the most common malignant skin tumor in dogs. The good news? They're also one of the most treatable: more than 80% can be cured with surgery alone when caught early. The hard part has always been knowing which dogs to watch more closely. That's what this score is for.

How it works: Instead of looking at one gene, we built a polygenic risk score that combines signals from hundreds of genetic markers along with breed ancestry and sex to estimate your dog's individual inherited risk. To be clear, the risk score is not a diagnosis: it won't tell you your dog will get an MCT. But it tells you whether your dog's genetics puts them at higher, lower, or average risk compared to dogs generally, and that may change how you and your vet might approach monitoring.

What you can do with it: The single most important step — especially for dogs at elevated risk — is regular body checks. Run your hands over your dog, feel for new lumps, keep tabs on old ones. Your dog will think it's just really good petting. If you spot something new or changing, that's your cue to call the vet.

Here today: (proof)

  • Brett Ford, MS, Senior Scientist in Applied Science
  • Taki Kawakami, PhD, Principal Scientist in Computational Biology

We'll be live from 12:30–3 PM ET and checking back tomorrow and Wednesday for anything we miss. No question too basic or too technical — ask us anything. We'll sign our answers so you know who's talking.

EDIT: Thanks all for the questions! We're signing off for today but we'll be checking back in over the next day or two -- so feel free to drop a question if you came late.

Update 4/16: Correcting something from earlier — the updated MCT Risk score is available for dogs tested from March 2026 onward, not for all dogs tested since the original May 2023 model launched. Dogs with scores under the original model will still see those results. Sorry for the mix-up, and we've edited the affected responses below.

Results - Embark I.... wasn't expecting these results at all

I adopted Atticus a little over 1 month ago from a shelter nearby, and since then every person who's met him has been guessing his breed. The shelter listed him, his mom, and his siblings as Beagles, not even Beagle mixes, but that pretty obviously wasn't true. Most people have guessed that he's a purebred Spaniel of some sort (people also always assume he was like $4K lmao, even though he was just a normal shelter puppy fee), but I knew that wasn't the case because his mom and siblings clearly aren't Spaniels. That didn't mean that there was none in him, but he definitely wasn't a purebred.

I work in Vet Med, so I managed to guess the Shih Tzu based on his bowlegged-ness and the specific deciduous teeth that he's missing in his mouth, and I managed to guess the Chihuahua because they're in every small breed mix lol, but I was definitely expecting Dachshund too. Not because of the Dwarfism, I know that's common in lots of small breed dogs, but because he has the massive shovel-shaped feet and webbing that extends out to his nails, as well as the high prey drive and burrowing instincts that Dachshunds have. But nope, no Dachshund whatsoever.

Supermutt is Pitbull, Pekingese, German Shepherd, and Australian Shepherd. There's also a relative he's 9% related to who's 100% Russell-type Terrier, and a relative he's 6% related to who's 100% American Village Dog, so he has to have a teensy bit of those as well.

The dog in the foreground of the 2nd to last pic is my older dog, Limerick, also predominantly a Supermutt with results no one expected (she does actually have Lab!! But her most prevalent result beyond Supermutt is Collie.).

Thoughts on these results?? His Supermutt mix is Poodle (small), American Eskimo Dog, Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, and Pug. I was semi-surprised with his results. I’m curious where his brindle colour is from!

I genuinely expected our BC rescue to have a higher percentage of Border Collie in her. I’d say her looks are pretty convincing. We suspected she may be a little bit Sheltie, even her vet had made a similar comment. But the Aussie and Kelpie were what surprised me most of all. Well, anyway, here’s our Winnie girl!

I always knew he was mainly a heeler but I was so certain he was part Kelpie. The pit bull and shar pei portions were also quite surprising! Definitely recommend Embark as their report is super thorough, especially if you get the health report.

I got Piper 11 years ago when someone dumped her as a puppy down some country road. I always knew she was a chocolate lab and something, just didn’t know what. So I finally did an Embark test and these are her results. Honestly the Chow Chow makes a lot of sense because she’s never been super affectionate like most labs. She shows love in her own ways and we love every bit of her❤️

Awaiting results What could Macaroni be?

Thumbnail

Macaroni is 5y/o and my bf got him when he was 1.5y/o. I have wondered what he is for almost 2 years since I met him. My bf’s guess is English Pointer and that’s what I tell people but I think English or American foxhound could fit personality wise. Harriers are also in that line but pretty rare in the US. Or maybe Brittany mixed with something else to give him short hair and pointer freckles/ticking? Someone on r/IDmydog said beagle?? He doesn’t have any beagle behaviors or dramatic tendencies 😆

He’s 21-22” at the shoulder and almost 65 lbs but lowkey slightly overweight right now, healthy weight is around 55lbs more like in the last picture. Shelter didn’t have much info when BF got him 3 years ago, just know he had a sister named Cheese also at the shelter.

Any breed I look up that seems similar in looks is gonna be described as a high prey drive, high energy dog and some of them are forewarned to only be suitable as working dogs or they need 1-2 hrs intense exercise daily.

Mac however is very chill and tires out fully after only a 40 minute light walk. Not very vocal at all, only ever barks if he thinks there’s a threat to home/handler; super low pitched and strong and only a couple barks at a time. No strong prey drive it seems, never seen him chase or point out a squirrel or bird. Today, a big ass deer came really close to us on our walk and was staring us down and I was scared; he got directly in front of me and bared teeth, growled, and barked loud asf at it.

Very soft and sensitive, sweet and loving, really enjoys physical closeness and physical touch and any kind of attention or affection. Easy to train as he’s VERY eager to please and also easily motivated by food and physical affection, but takes a long time to figure things out and cannot figure things out on his own without guidance.

Any guesses what he’s mixed with? The Embark panel is on the way and I can not WAIT to find out!!! I will post update with results once they come back, but Embark says it will be 2-4 weeks once it clears the post and they scan the sample. I feel like a baby daddy waiting on a paternity test right now!

Results - Embark Dyno’s Embark results are in and apparently I’ve been living with a part-time wolf 😂

Meet Dyno! I adopted this handsome boy in March 2019, and I’ve spent the last seven years wondering what the heck he is.
He’s about 80 pounds, has two different colored eyes, is ridiculously smart, incredibly loyal, and takes his self-appointed security guard position VERY seriously. He also thinks he’s a lap dog.
Over the years, people have guessed everything from Border Collie and Great Dane to Husky and German Shepherd. I’ve had a few theories of my own!
Well, his Embark results are FINALLY in, and I was definitely surprised!
Oh, and apparently my dog has a 6.9% wolfiness score, which Embark considers unusually high! Most dogs score 1% or less. So naturally, I’ve decided I’m raising a domesticated wolf. 🤣🐺
What breeds do you think make up Dyno?
Make your guesses before swiping to the last two pictures for the big reveal!

Awaiting results Shelter said Terrier chihuahua mix

We think he he’s a Ratchi (Rat terrier Chihuahua mix) but a lot of people have said he looks like another breed so I’m curious what you think. We’re waiting results so we’ll update when they come in!

Quirks:
- LOVES to dig whether it’s in blankets or dirt he doesn’t care
- VERY energetic could run for hours and still have enough energy to power a small village
- Can jump about the height of our front door
Talkative
- If he sees a hand under a blanket or anything moving he will dive with both front feet together
Napoleon syndrome
-High prey drive for rodents and Squirrels
- digs his head into your side and rolls kinda like a somersault and folds like a potato bug

Curious to see what you think!

Results - Embark My Greek Rescue Boy! Chihuahua x

Thumbnail

This is my super sweet, very quirky, and mildly neurotic 4 year old rescue guy who came from Athens. I’ve had him for about 7 months!

He’s so loving and happy go lucky, equally content to go for a 5 mile hike or chill in bed all day (he also insists on sleeping with his head on my pillow). I was told he was a Cocker Spaniel Setter mix, but we were totally convinced he was heavy on the spaniel side with his big curly ears and head of hair that I’ve only ever seen on springers and cockers. He’s about 45-50 pounds (depending on the number of treats he gets and amount of food he steals) and shorter than my parents’ female Setter.

Turns out he’s 🥁🥁 75% English Setter (since Llewellin is pretty much just a subsection of English Setter), 11% GSP, and best of all…14% some mixture of Chihuahua (this is my favorite thing to joke about, hence the title) Pekingese, and German Shepherd. Now that I know, the long snout and feathers are totally obviously Setter but where the rest of it comes in is anyone’s guess. He’s a little shorter and stockier than most male setters I know, but his luscious feathers make him look (see final picture for his true form).

We were all shocked he had no spaniel in him but regardless, he’s my best buddy and my partner in crime and I absolutely adore him!
