Discussion Update on warped snare shell
Edit: if anyone cares 😆
As many mentioned that it’s the snare bed, it was not it’s a little tough to see in the pictures but the actual shell was warping inwards where the wire straps passed through. Measuring the roundness from that position and comparing it to the lugs perpendicular to them there was about a 1/4” difference.
I decided to try to fix it myself. I used two clothes steamers pointed about 1” away from the two spots that were warped inwards. To my surprise the steam alone kinda reset the shell to a more rounded shape. I then used two bar clamps reversed so they pushed outwards. I put one where the warp was and one perpendicular to it to keep the shell from ovaling when I pushed the warp out. Also while setting the clamps I was measuring across the snare from lug to lug to make sure I was as close to even as possible.
I got them all about 1/32” from each other, considering it was a 1/4” off a one point I’m happy with it. I’m going to keep the shell in the clamps for like a month and hope that it will retain this new shape.
Last two pics are before the repair.

The 4th and 5th pics made me so sad, damn. The snare wires caused this? Looking forward to updates, I'm really curious how this turns out.
Useless fact: when you reverse a clamp it's called a spreader.

Yeah it was really sad when I realized. It’s a beautiful custom built 14x9 snare that I bought off Facebook marketplace. The previous owner must have really cranked the snare wires down. It was to the point that the throw off was digging into the finish

Yeah seems weird. I’m not totally sure why it happened. The previous owner was using it with a missing lug. Idk if that had something to do with the warp 🤷🏻♂️

I dunno, my wife and I have been making this joke back and forth for years about the fucking coffee creamer everything someone says the word. She might find it funny.

That's really unfortunate. If the repair doesn't take completely, consider having a half inch trimmed off top and bottom. (To keep it even for hardware alignment) Losing an inch sucks, but if it makes the snare useable again, it might be worth it to save the drum.

I was thinking that too. If it comes to that I might see if I can pay the guy who originally made it to do that.

The other advantage there, would be that the bearing edges and snare beds would have to be re-cut, and it should be enough to remove the damaged areas. I wish you luck in saving your snare.

If you put some die cast hoops on it, that might help it stay in round.

As long as it’s within 1/8th, you should be fine. Hopefully it’ll retain its roundness to some degree.
