I fully believe Tim Curry is powerful enough to enjoy the afterlife while alive

337

u/Thameus Mar 20 '22

That one role (and the cult following) probably did more to advance LGBTQ acceptance than anything else in history.

u/Magmaigneous Mar 20 '22

Tim Curry may pass one day, but Frank-N-Furter will live forever.

I wasn't aware Animaniacs played an important part in lgbt history. Good for them

They're talking about Home Alone 2.

Wadsworth is legendary.

19

u/awesomeone6044 Mar 21 '22

In an amazingly talented cast of actors and actresses he not only stole The show, he is the entire fucking movie. And the only main character in it invented for the flick.

5

u/mustangsal Mar 21 '22

Absolutely one of his best roles

2

u/D3AD_SPAC3 Mar 21 '22

Legitimately one of my favorites of his performances.

I know it made me question my sexual orientation. I'm a straight woman but apparently I've got a thing for guys in fishnets because woof

10

u/meservyjon Mar 21 '22

Tim Curry has to be the only man alive that can put on women's clothing and have men and women respect the shit out of him. That is Huge Dick Energy.

15

u/G0Slowly Mar 21 '22

You think so? I’d be curious what the other contenders are. Stonewall aside, was it Ellen? Elton? Freddie? I’m unfamiliar with who was open about it and how early it was (which goes in hand with how accepted it’d be..)

25

u/Lord_Derpenheim Mar 21 '22

Definitely not Freddie. Now, maybe, but at the time it was not at all widely a good thing, because it was muddied with how stigmatized aids was.

17

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '22 edited Mar 21 '22

Jokes aside, LGBT acceptance wasn't advanced by one Hollywood actor or actress.

That's called idolization. LGBT acceptance was accomplished through many hardworking NGOs, activists and good people fighting tooth and nail without a dime to show for it. Not a multi millionaire with a TV show. Normalization is a thing, so LGBT characters and actors becoming commonplace advances the community, too. However, that only works subtly on a macro scale. It's about continuous exposure, not single encounters.

One actor who is very successful and easily digestible? That's a token minority oftentimes. A lot of LGBT celebrities have done a lot for the community, but it's usually through their behind the scenes work and it usually involves them recruiting the help of NGOs and activists and community organizers anyway.

Edit: I'd argue some of the earliest successes of gay celebrities made it even more difficult for a more diverse crowd to break through homophobia. It was easy for society to digest Freddie Mercury, because he was a cis man and had relationships with women. Ellen was a wealthy white lesbian. Elton John was a proper English man with knighthood. They were easy for society to accept, and led to people of color and trans people getting left out of the discussion for a long time.

4

u/G0Slowly Mar 21 '22

This sort of in depth answer is what I wanted, thank you!! ā€œIf you had to pick any actor, musical artist, or author, etc which would you say advanced the normalization of gay people the most?ā€ would maybe be a more accurate question. Also want to throw out that I think the campaign we had that encouraged coming out to those close to us (if they were in a safe place to do so) helped an enormous amount. It’s much easier to accept the demonization campaign when it’s some vague boogeyman preying in bathrooms etc as opposed to when it’s your Uncle Chris or best friend from college.

8

u/emfrank Mar 21 '22

As much as I like Rocky Horror, it was a cult film which did not really reach the average person. I think the show SOAP from the late 70's is a contender. Billy Crystal played a complex gay character, rather than a stereotype, and the show was widely watched. Phil Donahue's talk show also dealt with LGBT and other issues of acceptance. The show was groundbreaking when it started in the 70s, and reached a lot of women at home, but became a parody of itself. Finally, it is worth noting that Norman Lear had queer themes in episodes of many of his shows, like All in the Family.

Ellen was important, especially for the portrayal of lesbian relationships, but her show was significantly later.

9

u/Thameus Mar 21 '22

I wonder, do people still realize how the midnight movie showings of Rocky horror picture show actually worked? It was the cult much more than Tim's specific performance that did the trick.

5

u/evilsir Mar 21 '22

I remember the first time i watched Rocky Horror. I was confused throughout the entire movie. I'm also not really a fan of musicals. But, even back then, i loved me some Tim Curry, so I sat through it.

Credits rolled. I sat there, thinking about what I'd just seen.

Got a drink. Got some snacks. Watched it again.

Brilliant movie

Alan Rickman was also very powerful, probably enough that he could hang out in life from the afterlife.

Tim Curry ain't dead, but he did suffer a massive stroke several years ago. So he's probably not really gonna go onto twitter to smack down some stupid. It's nice that someone has his back.

Last time I saw him online taking questions, he seemed to be doing really well all things considered.

Wait, what?! I was fucking sure he died? I remember reading about it and being sad about it. That was about one or two years ago. Why do I have such a vivid memory of reading about his death?

4

u/ExtremeAlternative0 Mar 20 '22

reminds me of when some news site reported that one of the Monty python guys had died when he hadn't. He then responded to them on social media calling them idiots.

7

u/phuqo5 Mar 20 '22

This definitely happened and I definitely remember reading about this and being mildly sad about it but I know goddamn well I remember reading of his death.

8

u/arfski Mar 20 '22

Was that death before or after he did the Joe Biden fund raiser the other year?! He had a massive stroke in 2012, but still does voice work. https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/movie-news/tim-curry-rocky-horror-fundraiser-democrats-1081475/

4

u/phuqo5 Mar 20 '22

I am not the only in this thread who remembers this exact same thing.

8

u/arfski Mar 20 '22

7

u/phuqo5 Mar 21 '22

I know the difference between Alan Rickman and Tim Curry. Alan rickman did not appear in rocky horror picture show

2

u/arfski Mar 21 '22

Didn't want to assume, I mean after all you remember Tim Curry apparently dying, which is news to him, so excuse me if my limited knowledge of you suggests that you may have a dubious memory!

4

u/phuqo5 Mar 21 '22

Sorry. Didn't mean to sound rude but a buuuuunch of people in this thread remember the same thing and I didn't come into the comments and get tricked by them. I stared at the post baffled for like 5 minutes looking for what I was missing because I was sure he was dead. Like this has my fucking mind blown.

1

u/arfski Mar 21 '22

You're cool! False memories are a thing, not just deaths but things like scenes people honestly believe they're watched, that don't actually exist in the film etc. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_memory#Mandela_Effect
