So I am at the part where Nora ( granny ) gives yoo her backstory.
TLDR AT END
The story does a fine job but I feel out of context some might not get it. As I am from Ireland the same country Nora and Yeong gi are from I can provide deeper context.
I wont go over everything cause I’m not going to write an essay so feel free to do your own research but this is just a brief summary.
Nora is 73 in the story and I love yoo came out 10 years ago, so while the inverse story the years are always 20xx or 20xy etc it’s likely this series takes place in 2016 logically.
So she would be 83 now, this would mean she was in her 20s in Ireland in the 1960s
Now she mentions moving up north, for context Ireland is split into 2 parts there’s the Republic of Ireland formed officially in 1949 before that it was the constitution of Ireland 1937- 1949 before that it was the free state of Ireland 1922- 1937.
Before that we were just Ireland under British rule.
When Ireland became a free state all countries of Ireland joined except 6 in the north of Ireland which became Northern Ireland.
Between its creation Northern Ireland was split into 2 fractions.
There were the Green catholic republicans who rejected the state of Northern Ireland and saw themselves as Irish against British rule.
And the orange Protestant unionists who saw themselves as British.
During that time period being catholic was heavily discriminated against which goes along with what Nora said on how she found it difficult to find a work due to religious reasons.
Now she said when she was born she was given to the church which was a common thing.
Back then mothers who had children out of wedlock were heavily discriminated against and shunned by society and families, a lot of newborns were given to the church.
There is a lot of controversies around this that affect a lot of people, nearly every Irish family today will have some story about the church. My mother for instance who is 70 was raised by her grandmother and there were instances where members of the church showed up to try and take my mother but my great nan didn’t allow them and chased them off as she knew the dark stories of what life is like there.
While Ireland is a catholic country today we still have a strained relationship with the Catholic Church and has since moved to a more separation between church and state.
So that is why Nora was raised by the church as she was likely born from wedlock.
Now Northern Ireland 1960s was a tricky situation as that is the official start of “ the troubles”. The troubles is a time period where tension between the catholic republicans and British Protestants were at the highest.
Though it was long before the 60s when this started.
Civil rights movements started up for catholics seeking equal rights.
Terrorist groups like the IRA rose up fighting British soldiers and the British version called the Ulster volunteer force leading to deaths on both sides.
In 1969 peaceful protests turned to riots leading to British soldiers opening fires.
The worst being Bloody Sunday 1972 when British soldiers opened fire on a protest killing 13 people.
The troubles ended with the Good Friday agreement 1998.
So tldr.
Nora would have been born around 1943 give or take.
Been in her 20s in the 1960s and 30s in the 1970s ( the time period she said her friends moved away )
Nora was raised by the church after her parents gave her up.
This was common in Ireland for out of wedlock children during that period.
She moved to the north in 1960s met her to be husband, they became activist during a time period known as the troubles.
Her husband was killed in one of the protests likely killed by unionist terrorist. The uvf or British soldiers.
So that is a brief summary of what is more than likely what Nora lived through when she was young.
The story provides a brief glimpse and credit to the author as a Korean who knew enough of Irish history to know how Nora likely didn’t have an easy life back then.
The story Nora described to yoo is sadly a very relatable story someone from her generation would know.
So there you are for those of you who would be interested in knowing more about Nora.
