It reminds me of the tampon ad from the ‘80s where the mom overheard her little boy telling his friend he wanted tampons for his birthday.

The mom was so confused and the little boy told his friend that with tampons, you can go swimming, fishing, diving, horseback riding, hang gliding, etc.!

If the tampon doesn't fit, you must not sit

Omg hahaha I can see the jump your mind made there and it's hilarious.

Yes it was, I think we in Germany had the same ad translated.

Reminds me of the early 90’s Easy Spirit ads with the basketball players playing in heels.

I saw a group of gay men who did that easy spirit ad as a Halloween costume. They played a game in the middle of Castro street. They stuffed sports bras instead of regular bras for authenticity.

Gemini say it's not real. Sad :(

No, that wasn't a real commercial—it’s a classic joke from the 1980s and '90s! The story you saw on Reddit is a long-standing playground joke that poked fun at how feminine hygiene products were marketed back then.

The Joke Punchline

In the classic version of the joke, a little boy asks his mom for a box of tampons for his birthday (or puts them in the grocery cart). When his confused mom asks why on earth he wants them, he says:

"Because on TV, it says if you use these, you can go swimming, horseback riding, and skydiving!"

Why People Misremember It as Real

The joke worked—and remains memorable decades later—because 1980s and '90s tampon commercials (from brands like Tampax, Playtex, and O.B.) were notoriously formulaic. They almost always featured women: * Wearing pure white pants or white swimsuits. * Running along a beach, horseback riding, or swimming in a pool. * Smiling while talking about "ultimate freedom and protection." Because those commercials played constantly on TV, people's brains blended the famous joke with the actual ads, leading many to misremember it as a real, hilarious TV spot!

But that person remembers that commercial

Crazy how fallible our memories are. I've heard that everytime you access a memory you alter it

u/IAmDanHimself Jul 23 '26

Every single time?

2

u/GOxDirigible Jul 22 '26

It's a Mandela effect item, apparently

The Mamdani Effect

1

u/MayberryBombadil Jul 22 '26

The "Waaagh!!" effect, more like.

3

u/stellabarnum Jul 22 '26

I DO NOT WANT TO SEE THIS WOMAN ADVERTISING TAMPONS OMG

7

u/Devil_Dan83 Jul 22 '26

I think just using the same footage and putting the tampon brand at the end would work.

I was thinking as I was watching this that it looks like so many ads I’ve seen for period products where all the women are running around to show you can still run and stuff with the product.

3

u/FearanddopingII Jul 22 '26

In all white. I wouldn't wear all white NOT on my period. That shit always baffles me.

1

u/muaddict071537 Jul 22 '26

Even if I know for a fact my period won’t come, wearing all white feels too risky. Like the second I wear white, my uterus will decide my period actually needs to come then.

Wild shi'

u/Razzler1973 Jul 22 '26

I do not remember that ad but that's excellent! haha

1

u/VoidOmatic Jul 22 '26

Woah I had completely forgotten about that commercial.

1

u/Positive_Leads Jul 22 '26

does it have a YouTube link?

1

u/SimonArgent Jul 22 '26

This was my first thought.

1

u/CutesyCo Jul 22 '26

That's such a classic misunderstanding kids really do hear one line and build an entire story around it. Those old commercials had a charm that's hard to forget

1

u/FearTheEffectiveCode Jul 22 '26

Can you give us a link to that add? It should be there somewhere.

1

u/SaraUnsteady Jul 22 '26

I didn’t even watch the commercial but I hear it as a joke and that’s where my mind went as soon as I watched this lol

1

u/DistractedByCookies Jul 22 '26

That is actually a GENIUS way to advertise tampons. So much better than the usual blue liquid stuff.

1

u/KLeeSanchez Jul 22 '26

The 80s and 90s had the best commercials

If you ever want to know why millennials are the way we are, it's absurdist Gen X commercials and Saturday morning cartoons

1

u/DanDanDan0123 Jul 22 '26

In the last 10-15 years or so I read that teenagers would soak tampons in drinking alcohol then put it in their rear. Or the other place for girls. Gets them drunk.

Imagine how many would be offended by this ad in 2026 :O

1

u/naturalninetime Jul 23 '26

Someone below commented that no such ad existed. 🤔

u/CrazyGunnerr Jul 25 '26

My uncle asked for it as well, he was so convinced he could do everything with it.
